They have similar casts and the quirky humor is still there. Both are also slice-of-life (like) anime.

Both series are really similar with the idea of a male protagonist being pestered/bullied comically by a very strange/publicly embarrassing female protagonist that believes in the occult. Both girls make hybrid clubs which a few characters join for various reasons, and along with these people the main protagonist must figure out the story behind this strange girl in order to help her.

Judged by how character setting is almost man-to-man similar, can't refuse that it will make the overall mood and tone similar too. That's how it's happening. The leading male and narrator, Kyon and Oreki Houtarou, are made from the same mold. Average, not standing out, and does not want to take initiative whatsoever in school activities. And guess what, they are getting pushed around by girl of course, The ultimate reason why any straight man go out of their comfort zone. The story of Hyouka revolve around solving mystery, not a grand one, but very well made. Well made enough to be believable, even when portrayed by  read more

First of all, both anime have these following themes in common: comedy, slice-of-life, supernatural, and school. The settings are the same; they are both a school and the characters are part of a club that only consist of five members: two boys and three girls. I also feel that the characters have similar personalities with some slightly differences.

For whatever reason, this didn't hit me until I watched the first episode of Tomodachi's second season but there's a SUPER OBVIOUS linking factor to be found between these two: - Crazy bitches/galpals in a small school clubroom. - One crazy bitch/galpal bullying the other in a "friendly" way. - The male lead quickly becoming indifferent to the chaos surrounding himself; going with the flow due to being smart enough to know that it's pointless to either resist or intervene. (Instead, it's OBVIOUSLY better to commentate to the viewers with his internalized thoughts about what's going on.) I suppose the whole love triangle thing is worth noting, as well...  read more

Both main female leads are domineering and somewhat naive gods, and both animes are slice of life.

Both shows feature male leads that are realistic (or pessimistic) narrators. While Hachiman's outlook tends to focus on the dark-side of individuals and society, Kyon in Melancholy carries only a sarcastic and cynical tone in his narration. Both leads are dropped into after-school clubs against their will, filled with interesting characters. Kyon deals with an energetic, enigmatic female lead whose antics often place its club members in trouble. Hachiman on the other hand, works with an ice-queen club leader and carries significantly less pull than Kyon. The similarities of the male leads and the environments each is placed makes these shows easy to compare, even  read more

Both center around a group of psychical-ability wielders who disguises themselves as a group of high-school students that take part on various activities, under the name of SOS Brigade and Hoshinoumi's Student Council. Both groups are composed of similar characters : socially-outcast girl who leads the group, reluctant MC and his cute little sister, etc. Haruhi tries to find them to recruit them into her club, while Nao for the sake of securing them from evil scientists.

they have the same type of comedy, as well as the same personality for the male protagonist. They both give off that feel of being a sometimes romantic yet sometimes not genre.

The story-lines aren't very similar but the random (and not logical) experiences both Haruhi's experience (well, in melancholy's case, mostly Kyon's experience) are quite similar. While watching Melancholy, I thought of Ouran so yeah. They're both quite funny too.

They are both comedy and they both have characters with "strange" qualities... such as Sousuke having the military thing and Haruhi having the alien, esper, time-traveller thing. They are both hilarious with some romance added in.

Both of these series were animated by Kyoto Animation, featuring similar quality and style in animation. Both accentuate cute "moe" qualities, light but relaxing slice of life-like episodes, and innocent high school comedy.

Male protagonist and storyteller, while the story is actually about a tsundere girl who walks over them and terrorises them. Both guys are cynical and comical, without them realising it.

kyon's prior gig as yuuishi in a very snowy town that is like an alternate universe to the melancholy of haruhi suzumiya....it seemed so eerily reminiscent. everything was very similar except kyon(yuuishi)...it was the exact same character.

Even thought the humor is darker in Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, both are school life anime with a really crazy cast.

Both are about an outcast of a girl that ends up forcing a guy to tag along with her for helping her with stuff (Haruhi: Helping with her SOS Brigade | Toradora!: Mainly just supporting her). Some aspects of the art are also similar.

Even if Denpa Onna lacks the supernatural element that Haruhi no Yuutsu had, it's still about a normal guy surrounded by a cast of weirdos.

A series of strange occurrences befall our audience-counterpart leading male, while trying to deal with super-tsundere leading females, and a faux-harem of other strange females. Both toy with the tropes and cliches of the genre, while retaining unique and interesting voices.

Being the famous anime that Haruhi is, there's no harm in watching Haruhi before jumping into Seitokai no Ichizon, which is filled with otaku jokes and parodies. There are Haruhi references too.

Both have the same character designer, Noizi Ito. There are similar elements in both stories, such as the time-space continuum and the school life scenario.

Both series have a character that has god-like abilities and they use these powers to alter the world in order to get what they desire at the moment. Both have other characters that try to prevent these changes from happening. Also, both of the main female characters are considered "weird", but in Sasami-san, the female lead is a NEET. While in Suzumiya Haruhi, the female lead is eccentric and has an obsession with aliens, espers, and time-travelers.

1. The main character, Kazuma, is similar like Kyon. He narrated his life with some humorous in a serious moment. 2. Kazuma and Kyon have a similar situation where both of them were surrounding with odd partners.

When you think about it, the cast of Haruhi seems to be heavily inspired from the cast of Evangelion in character design. Isn't Kyon so similar to Shinji? Itsuki to Kaoru? Yuki to Rei? Isn't Haruhi's bossiness similar to Asuka's? And the whole fighting giants in a parralel dimension thing, isn't it similar to the angels? Considering the meta commentary on otaku culture KyoAni productions were doing at that time, I don't think the similarities between Haruhi and Evangelion are a coincidence. And they both just so happen to be some of the most influencial series in anime history.

They're both funny, have an original (sort of) plot and great characters. Also, Kiriki reminds me of Koizumi.

While the overarching story, setting, genre and themes are quite different, the relationship and interaction between Haruhi and Kyon is very similar to that of Horo and Lawrence from Spice and Wolf. If you liked the character traits of the male and female lead of Haruhi, Spice and Wolf would be very enjoyable. (And even if you didn't, watch Spice and Wolf nonethelss since it's a fantastic show and needs more popularity.)

Because whenever Haruhi says/does something annoying, abnormal, silly etc. Kyon rebuts back to her but not in direct, he just says it in his mind just like what Gintoki does too. -both animes are funny

Both deal with a group of highschool students as well as a supernatural factor (particularly time travel). I found both animes had likeable characters and a unique plot. As I was watching Zero no Tsukaima, I couldn't stop thinking about how related it was with Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu. The first thing I noticed was the relation between Yuki and Tabitha. Those two could be twin sisters. No kidding. But then I started noticing some other similarities. In both series, there is a bossy girl that drags a guy into her crazy world. And that treats him like a slave. I still think that if Louise and Haruhi ever met, they would probably be very good friends. Now, I know there's going to be a lot of people questioning my sanity for such a recommendation, but I'm going to do it anyway because, quite frankly, there are a lot of similarities between Baccano! and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya that are interesting and scare me just a bit. First, the stories are not normal for the time and place they are set in. Rather, the activities that happen with the characters during each series could be described as "paranormal". These happenings really do help make some of the characters, and give the "normal" characters defining moments in each series. This parallel between the  read more

Misaki is a very strong character--like Haruhi. She doesn't put up with any nonsense. Although she isn't quite as crazy as Haruhi, Misaki still can be tough. I would put Misaki up against any guy. XD The boy who has likes her, Usui, is really funny. He can be like Jiraiya sometimes. So if any of you like that sort of humor this will definitely appeal to you. Also if you like girls dressed up in cute maid outfits, I highly recommend this!

There lots of similarity when we talk about both anime such as - -Both male protagonist just want a quite, peaceful life but end up with lots of trouble. -Both have to deal with alien who come out of nowhere and ruin their life.(and lots of other supernatural thing!!) -Both animes parody other anime, including very brief yet entertaining skits. -Different kind of comedy but you guys going to enjoy watching male protagonist being bully around with the girl around them!! If you guy enjoy watching this, you might as well try watching Haiyore! Nyaruko-san!!

The two really remind me of one another. The characters and their dynamics are a notch different with a different premise, but the style of entertainment with the humor and interesting character reactions provide the same sort of effect for me. Not to say that their quality is on par (I'll just let the individual decide that), only that how they provided entertainment to me (comedy, character drama, and such) were on very similar wavelengths.

If you liked The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, you would find Higurashi no Naku Koro ni to be quite similar, as the atmosphere in both series is the same. Both are about being bored, and being weird to have fun. They both center around a group of highschool students who become really good friends (slice of life-ish). They have some sort of underlying sci-fi tones (though it is more evident in Haruhi). The biggest difference would be that Manabi Straight! is less confusing, and much more sentimental.

It's kind of evident that there's some influence going around these two, from Haruhi to Kotoura-san, no wonder taking into account the fame of Suzumiya Haruhi, so starting from the beginning, there's a scholar club in both that investigates paranormal activity, there's espers involved one way or another, even though the club it's about that it's mostly used as a fun kill time for it's integrants and there's some similarities between the characters also, so yeah they're similar, recommended if you like any of these series.

Basically MoHS is a science fiction version of Hyakko with a shorter main story arc. It, too, is about a high school girl determined to get as much out of life as possible, involving her friends whether the want to be or not.

Both settings are considerably different but a key part of both series is that the main character is lead by a future version of someone that he knows and that guides him in order to not to ruin their future. Mirai in the case of Mirai no Mirai and Mikuru in the case of Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu, in both they also travel to the past and know past versions of people they know too, without them noticing in the future yet still having influenced in them and changing the protagonist's perception on those people.

You want to see an anime about High School with some weird stuff going on? Closed spaces and psychic powers? Time travel maybe? And two girls one guy triangle? Well, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya would give you all that and add awesome Kyon narration. And Battle Royal High School give you all that and add Dark Lord and robotic suits. Considering how old Battle Royal High School is, this is probably the show that Haruhi watched as a kid and that changed her personality to what we got today. Watch both of the shows and see if I'm right.

- Both have what could be described as at least partially narcissistic protagonists, although they still remain charming at times and don’t seem to actively WANT to hurt anyone. - Both involve supernatural happenings, although Haruhi’s are much less frequent. - Both are more akin to collections of short stories (episodic) as opposed to one larger overarching plotline. - Both originated from Light Novels. - Both involve little to no romance, as whatever feelings there are get overshadowed by the protagonist’s hesitancy to get too close to anyone else.

About groups of weird people. While the characters do vary a lot, both stories are told from the male protagonist's POV as he is thrust into this bizarre group of people. While Haruhi and Ritsu could not hardly be any more opposite in personality, it's the MC's reactions and narration of the events as he watches the female protagonist and other main characters that make these shows somewhat similar. Overall, if you enjoy comedy series about hyperactive female characters you will probably enjoy both series.

Although there doesn't seem to be many similarities between these two shows, both shows sent shivers down my spine and made me ask myself some serious questions. Haruhi made me realize my insignificance or that maybe I'm less insignificant than I first thought. Both are slice-of-life comedies that use absurdist humor. Both have a snarky, sarcastic, and self-aware male main that counterbalance an energetic female lead. Haruhi Suzumiya, however, is more centered around the single female lead, is less focussed on romance, and has more exposition about the supernatural aspects of the show.

Both series deal with a fairly ordinary person (Hiyori and Kyon) who ends dealing with an irresponsible, slightly crazy, god (Haruhi and Yato). In both cass the other characters are mostly also extraordinary beings. Although Noragami is slightly more serious, both series contain large amouts of slapstick comedy mixed in with some more intense moments. The tone is quite different, but I sincerly recommend watching both.

These anime are intended to poke fun at the genres they belong to so it works for them to be animated and/or aired in unconventional ways. At the risk of stretching things, the Super Gals characters share a couple of similar traits with the Haruhi characters: Ran Kotobuki - Haruhi Suzumiya (forceful personality) Miyu Yamazaki - Yuki Nagato (ready for action) Aya Hoshino - Mikuru Asahina (sensitive) Rei Otohata - Kyon (jaded sort) Yuya Asou - Itsuki Koizumi (easy going type most of the time)

They both have whimsical-like parts to them, and they both have people that don't want to be involved (Kurogane and Kyon) and bishonen charcters (Fai and Itsuki).

how the episodes are aired out of order... I don't know but this was on my mind the entire show because of the wack placement of the series flow

I know many people might be surprised by me saying that Kuroshitsuji and MoHS are similar. But I'm not crazy because they really are. In Kuroshitsuji it defies cliches and is serious and funny and so many things all wrapped into one. This is also true for MoHS. Also, the characters Sebastian and Haruhi are similar in the way that they can pull off basically anything at all. And sometimes when they do it's just absolutely hilarious. Like the time in Kuroshitsuji episode one when Seb had to do all the work cuz everyone else at the mansion is incompetent. XD and then how Haruhi  read more

We have a perfectly normal high school student who just wants to fit in and make friends. A chance meeting with the most beautiful and unapproachable girl in school leads to them being roped into an infamous school club. The ensuing shenanigans defy reason, but more importantly, they completely defy genre. It'll take a few episodes, but things definitely aren't as they seem.

If the kids in this show grew up and went to high school they would fit right in with the main characters from who hang out with Haruhi Suzumiya. Both shows tackle magical subjects, and lead roles who try to avoid their harsh and often boring realities for worlds of their own creating, where fun and fantasy offer a needed escape. Though Abenobashi is a bit more whimsical than Haruhi, they both lampoon (to a certain extent) other typical anime genre's and conventions.

Kyon and Recruit have a lot of similarities, especially in their role in the series. They're both surrounded by a quirky cast and see themselves as the 'normal' one.

The world ended three years prior to the series' main timeline. There are a lot of dissimilarities between these two shows, but this particular plot point is of note, and important in both animes.

Both The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and the second Urusei Yatsura movie deal with the concept of the world being the product of a young girl's mind without her being aware. Also they are both comedies.

Main Male character has the same Uninterested attitude towards everything and is surrounded by crazy and unique people.

The main character is bored with life. They seek/get involved with supernatural beings and certain clubs/organizations in order to make life more interesting. Each of these shows features supernatural intrigue alongside a colorful cast of characters who are more than they seem.

While most of parts of the anime are upbeat and fun, there is also a dark side to it. The characters will tell truth about themselves and one of the cute bishojo in the stories will show a dark side of themselves.

I just felt that they really have the same feeling .. The animation maybe, not sure but it really reminds me of it.

Haruhi and the main in Katte ni Kaizou both believe in supernatural elements such as aliens, UFOs, and ghosts. They have similar settings such as school and the facilitation of clubs.

It reminds me of it in alot of ways, they both have mystery, comedy and romance, lots of pretty girls, and some of the voice actors are the same. The art is very similar too.

Alice is like Haruhi while Narumi is like Kyon and their relationship is similar. Also, there is mystery in both series.

In a similar fashion, Excel Saga is a parody/comedy that takes everything to extreme. If you enjoy these kind of ëxtreme" experiments, you will like Excel Saga.

Both of these deal primarily with the issues of depression and finding your place in the world. They are both heavily psychological, well-scripted, and contain only enough science fiction to add to the characters, rather than just become the premise for the show.

What if God was a high school student with destructive tendencies if left unchecked. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya tells the story of the SOS Brigade valiantly providing entertainment to God so the world doesn't get destroyed out of boredom. SSSS.Gridman tells the story of the Gridman Alliance battling against God's self destructive loneliness. You might enjoy this series if you don't take it seriously.

Funny anime, some leads have sci-fi-like powers. Male lead is dragged onto female lead's world. Normal male lead develops a relationship with a female lead with supernatural powers.

Tenchi Universe is similar to The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya because it has the same: high school kids with powers thing. I think that Tenchi in Tokyo might be similar to The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya but i havn't seen it.

- sci-fi - both deal with the supernatural - cast from both series is very similar (character personalities) - male protagonist that somehow gets involved I watched Toaru no Index before Haruhi no Yuutsu. When I was watching Haruhi, during some moments it felt like I was rewatching Toaru no Index. They are extremely similar, but also have many differences. If you like one, I strongly suggest you try the other.

D-Frag and Haruhi both use screwball comedy where the main character guy is drawn into some female's insane world.

Both involve students in a club that deals with the supernatural. Sharing the cheery, optimistic tone, both works have great characters that are just plain adorable.

Both are made by KyoAni, so they have similar art. They are both sort of supernatural slice of life stories. Technically, they both include a literature club. Akihito's glasses fetish reminded me of Kyon's ponytail fetish).

Bizarre comedy that relies with non human character standpoint indifference, only difference is that Haruhi setting is about school while other Maou is to restaurant, Main Protagonist is unaware of their own eccentricity to other people and their normal environment to make a slapstick.

Although they don't have the same premise, both series involves a group of students who forms a club for various activities at school. (the activities contrasts differently though) The main female protagonist from both series (Riko and Haruhi) has similiar personalities with their tomboyish attitudes. However, they do care about their classmates from heart. Both series follows more of a slice of life theme although Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu has an additional taste of science fiction. Expect comedy and humorous dialogue interactions between characters that are absurd, out of place, and sometimes randomly out of nowhere.

Both have similar female protagonists. Chiho Takachiho and Suzumiya Haruhi are both energetic girls and a lot of the humor (especially from Gakkatsu) comes from random events or statements.

Kyon and Haruhi = Tsuda and Shino's relationship, also both give off the same feeling though The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya potrays more of a hidden message than Seitokai Yakuindomo.

Haruhi retains the supernatural aspects, centering around a group of 5 instead of 4. While the show's plotines and such differ, the main supernatural aspect of abnormal beings with powers, working to defend either a town, or in Haruhi's case, the earth. Both series also contain a good deal of off-and-on comedy. Plus, Hime's personality sometimes reminds me of Haruhi's.

Aliens exist in both plots (albeit, with the theme being even stronger in Level E), but, more than that, both ordinary humans and extraordinary beings are thrust into strange situations. Particular story arcs feel especially similar to each other. Also, story arcs are, typically, spurred from the main character of each (both of whom are, also, extremely gifted, but eccentric) falling into a spell of boredom. Both stray from the typical genres (or, at least, the traditional execution of such genres) and have excellent humor.

The Melancholy of Haruhi (MH) did not begin the trend of "school club" anime, but it did accelerate the genre over the last decade. The two shows noticeably parallel one another in that both feature male leads that frequently monologue. Kyon (MH) and Hachiman (SNAFU) both provide cynical narratives and analyses of events and characters throughout their respective series. In MH the show is told from Kyon's vantage point, and while Hachiman is darker than Kyon, he has a similar tone and demeanor. MH features a broader cast with lower levels of character depth than SNAFU2, but it focuses on the activities of the  read more

Kujibiki Unbalance is basically poor man's Haruhi Suzumyia...but they're both very simmilar *the action takes place in a school where lots of weird stuff happens *both shows exagerate when it comes to realism *the characters are very much alike: Kyon=Chihiro Haruhi=Renko+Tokino Nagato=Ritsuko Mikuru=Yamada *In the melancholy we see Haruhi abusing Mikuru,in Kujibiki we see Renko abusing Yamada *both also share the same genres:action, drama, comedy, school, sclice of life concluding...if you liked the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumyia there's a big chance that you'll like Kujibiki Unbalance

They both have a classical boyfriend girlfriend relationship, although in Haruhi, the relationship is never made known, but it's still clear that it's there

Both stories contain a girl who find the school that they are in boring and is of no real challenge to them. Rikako Muto and Haruhi are amazing in sports and in studies and are considered the 'perfect girl' for any guy but are really hard to come close to. They also have an air of arrogance which other school student notice and dislike to an extent of being jealous of them. They both eventually meet an average guys whose within thier same year that don't really have interest towards them but soon find a deep profound love for each other without realizing it.
