Coming-of-age stories with a strong focus on "reality vs. fantasy"' coping and aceptance. Lots of first-person monologue and supernatural elements to support their narrative. Good at different things so both worth watching.
Both are complex for several reasons, mainly due to a non-linear narrative, labyrinth plots and time travel. Both series have an irregular pace, with either lots of events happening in a short span of time or nothing happening in a long ammount of time, which might make the viewer miss some apparently unimportant detail when not paying enough attention.
At first both series look like nonsense untill you reach the end, where it gets to a sastisfying conclusion (which in the case of Haruhi would be the movie).
