I’VE SWITCHED TO ANILIST. LOOK FOR StacysMom. I STILL CHECK THIS PROFILE SOMETIMES, BUT ONLY LIKE ONCE OR TWICE A YEAR.
I'm Parker. Currently a senior at Skidmore College. Creative Writing major; Japanese/Philosophy double-minor. Outside of academics, I'm a big D&D player and am doing my best to learn whatever video game my friends are into (currently DotA). I'm also a pretty big reader and film-watcher. I stick my toes into almost every narrative medium out there, so come and talk with me about whatever you want. I'm pretty friendly.
I have lots of opinions. Here are a few of them:
Things should be judged based on what they achieve, not what they attempt.
"Average" isn't an insult. If something is truly average, it should never be offensively so.
It's far more rewarding to enjoy something than it is to dislike it.
My ratings used to be sorted by type and normally distributed with a standard deviation of 2. No, I'm not joking. I divided all of the anime I saw based on their format - movie, tv series, ONA, music video, etc. -- and ranked them from best to worst. The top 2.3% got 10s, the next 4.4% got 9s, the next 9.2% got 8s, etc. Why did I do this? To be honest, I'm not really sure either.
At this point, my ratings are pretty darn arbitrary. I'm going through and updating scores whenever I see fit. Maybe I'll get a legitimate system out one of these days, but I'm not holding my breath.
Dropped, watching, and on-hold shows are not rated. I'm a good boy.
Q: Do you think ghosts are real? A: I sure hope so.
Hey, long time no see!
I am now, as I announced a few years ago, reading "The Martian Chronicles". Thanks for your recommendation. I've enjoyed it so far, but I haven't finished it yet. I read "Night Meeting" and remembered that it was the one you particularly liked. It has a mystical feel to it, so I guess that's a reason why you like it? My favorite one (so far) was "And the Moon Be Still as Bright".
I don't know when you will log in again, but please do let me know. I'd love to have a chat again.
As a lot of people here are saying, your Punpun review was great. I just finished reading it and I wasnt exactly disappointed but I also didnt really have anything much to say about it. After reading your review I think I know a few reasons as to why thats the case. I like that you dont outright bash punpun and you talk about the things it does and how they arent exactly wrong but why they just didnt work for you. I agree with most of the points that you made.
I think it just feels like punpun is a very defeatist character and sure whatever you can talk about his childhood all you want, but honestly in my eyes it still doesnt justify the shit he pulls and the constant stream of mistakes that he never learns from. It feels like its just a very immature take on society and hardships and thats why i really like Sachi, I like how she deals with her problems head on. She still has her doubts and she hasnt convinced herself fully, but she doesnt sulk and pity herself constantly cause she knows that 1, it isnt gonna make her feel better, and 2, its only going to lead to more sulking and self pitying.
I also personally think that the uncles story (yuuichi) is one of the better stories in punpun, even though its extremely exaggerated and very unrealistic, it really does sell the whole character of not wanting to trust in anyone and not being able to love anyone anymore in fears of being responsible of such a catastrophe again. Even though he has by far the most depressing story of the lot HE STILL somehow manages to be a lot more likeable, cheerful, and supportive than all the other characters that underwent these so called "hardships". It really does feel like they were very immature and were constantly prone to make the most idiotic mistakes ive ever seen anyone make before. This is coming from someone who always found it really hard to talk to people and know when to say things or not to say them btw.
I quite agree with your way of thinking about scores, I would also like to explain it at some point in my profile.
If you would like to recommend me some anime/manga, go ahead ;)
You have interesting opinions, but not in a bad way. Honestly it's a little refreshing when it comes to a lot of these takes. And looking through some of your reviews I've accidentally found series I might enjoy.
Only real problem worth talking about in your punpun review is that you give 20th cb as a substitute for punpun. Why would you do this when 20cb is flawed beyond belief with some of the exact same issues you claimed there were in punpun such as a lack of focus, repetition (holy shit is 20th cb repetitive) and so on. I just don't know how you could recommend such a poor piece of media that simply wastes the readers time with a spam of half-assed reveals, dropped plot points, poorly written characters and a confusion with what it even wants to portray.
