Guy moves into a town which holds a mystery that unravels troughout the show. Higurashi has some lighter slice of life episodes, but that's cool because it's pretty long including -kai. Highly reccomend both

Horror, Supernatural & a lot of bloodshed (neither recommended to be watched past midnight) *shiver*

Higurashi and Shiki are similar to each other in that both take place in small villages where mysterious deaths occur. Higurashi, however, contains slapstick comedic scenes to a degree, which is kept to a minimum in Shiki.

Both anime have completely psychotic characters and an insane story line.

Both animes are seemed to be your average anime but are slightly twisted.

Both have a male main character being stalked by a group of creepy girls.

One major inspiration for Madoka Magica - a show which starts off like a bubbly, innocent anime but eventually descends into madness, mass hysteria and distrust among people, as well as murder - but ultimately shows the idealistic themes of friendship and trust.

Loop. Mystery. Survival. Horror.

the stories are completly different but the way how the plot change and they repeat the same thing over and over again reminded me of Higurashi! also both anime have female tsundere/crazy characters! and a guy involved with them xD

Higruashi, like gakkou gurashi will have you building crazy theories on who's going insane and what is really happening all the way through the series.

They share a similar eerie mood and atmosphere.

With Ookami Kakushi, think of a much softer, less violent version of Higurashi. Except, what we seem to be dealing with isn't a festial revolving around a god of death, but a wolf god. There are enough changes, for it to be it's own story, yet simular enough to ask, did the creator get some ideas from Higurashi? That includes some of the sound effects.

Both are horror series that makes your skin crawl. :D awesome art style and amazing music.

Both are thriller anime with a great deal of suspense and mystery. They both start out with a light almost happy go lucky feeling then everything turns dreadfully..dreadfully wrong. They both have great plot's, and while at first they may actually confuse the other. Higurashi just has a considerably greater amount of gore than steins;gate, but both are excellent watches. IF you like one you will probably like the other too.

With their story wrote by the same author, both animes are adopted from visual novels with the same name. Focused on -somewhat supernatural- murder mysteries, both stories feature some of the many possibilities which could happen in a period of time.

Crazy girls "harem" for the main character, mystery and torture.

Ghost Hound and Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni is similar in terms of the psychological things it might give the viewer while watching it. Although Ghost Hound has a more complicated and professional way of showing and stating things, it is still similar with HNNKN in terms of boggling your mind.

They're not really THAT similar... but they're alike cause they're both creepy horror-type Anime... and they both have repetition.... and a bunch of stories in one Anime.... Higurashi's definitely the scarier of the two in my opinion... but only cause Jigoku Shoujo doesn't have as much gore... and they both have 2 seasons and a third coming out this year ^___^

Both deal with characters who are paranoid and question reality. If you enjoyed one you'll likely enjoy the other as well.

both suspenceful and have a cat and mouse chase for the protaganist to find out the identity of the antagonist. Both animes explain things so it makes it easier for hte viewer, although Higurashi can be a bit confusing at times. Both are ranked pretty high too.
report Recommended by powjaynil
Both of these animes deal with villages that harbor a dark secret. Both of the villages have residents that take justice into their own hands. In Higurashi, the secret is much more hidden. In H2O, not a lot of effort is made to hide the secret

The Endless Eight episodes will definitely bring back memories if you watch this excellent horror anime. Higurashi has an eternal June, while the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya had an eternal August. Both are solved by the most simplest/unlikely of solutions. As well, everyone will definitely enjoy how the end results of Higurashi actually DOES change (unlike in Endless Eight, where Yuki Nagato states how some things were omitted, but those changes where never actually animated).

The both have Psychological experiments as a premise. They take place in a mysterious village tucked in the middle of nowhere similar themes of ghosts, characters with strange personalities, and legends

What I liked about Higurashi was the way it spun a tale, even though it could be a tad violent at times. The storyline was one that kept you guessing, and I had been looking for something of simular storyline, perhaps not as violent or into the horror genera as that. I found that in Durarara!!... which has it's own unexpected twists into the realm of stretching the believability in just the right ways.

Doesnt exactly have any similarities but I find both their plot amazing and unique for their own reasons, plus both have comedy even with all the gore going around.
report Recommended by mvpmerome
While not necessarily about murders, it is a twisted tale of paranoia (hence the title), strange stories and odd plot twists.
report Recommended by mmmeyeballs
Both of these shows feature time loops where the same plot is acted out, taking a different turn each time, and frequently overlaps, with things being told slightly differently. Higurashi is a lot more bright colors and slapstick humor, whereas Tatami Galaxy is somewhat darker humor, with less emphasis on little kids killing each other and laughing.

If I could, I would just get people to play the original visual novels of these games instead. Higurashi is the real bread winner, imo. The visual novel is one of the most eerie, foreboding pieces of media I have ever played. It does an AMAZING job of building up the world surrounding Hinamizawa and the mysteries surrounding it, constantly examining characters from fresh new angles. The anime is pretty accurate to the source material and definitely worth a watch, imo. It can get confusing as the story is split into arcs that all take place in alternative realities but really, stick through it. It's worth  read more

Horror anime which seem to rely more on psychological shock than visual shock, though you might get some of the visual as well. A similar "what the hell" mentality is incited when watching either for the first time. There are characters who can be described as yandere in both with a single-minded dedication to their love.

Both involving strange/mad/problematic girls around a new man in town, temples and holy things. Both had alternative feelings (higurashi:comedy and horror, air:comedy and that sad drama)
report Recommended by Kraanerg
Psychological, mindfvck, thriller anime for a mature audience. They creep you out and mess with your brain. Both, in one way or another, involve mysteries, split personalities, paranoia, and death. You'll find intriguing stories, a dark atmosphere, a sometimes hopeless vibe, few light-hearted moments... and an unconventional deity. Even though Higurashi has several protagonists and SEL only one, in both anime the girls are young, cute and seemingly harmless, but they have secrets and can be very scary at times. Higurashi is way more violent and bloody, but Lain also has some unsettling scenes.

While Higurashi no naku koro ni is a lot more Mystery and about mysterious murders, both of them contain a lot of gore.
report Recommended by -Sora-
Both centre around the unique features of a small, remote village and the events that have transpired there. Kamisama Dolls is less severe about it, since the majority of the series takes place in a more urban setting and deals with the repercussions, whereas Higurashi definitely tends toward the worst case scenario -- but as each piece of the backstory for Kamisama Dolls is revealed, it becomes increasing obvious that it's not exactly sunshine and lollipops either.
report Recommended by lithiumflower
If Steins Gate and Higurashi had a child, it would be Boku dake. Boku dake has the same dark vibes as Higurashi. The aim of both is to stop a tragedy by gaining new knowledge with each iteration of events that have happened.
report Recommended by xxwattcherxx
Both involve: - A series of murders and disappearances happening in a city/village - Teenagers dealing with paranoia, psychosis, drugs, suicide - Same scene told from the POV of different characters - Non-linear story with a hopeless, desperate feel - Gore, also similarly toned down/darkened in the censored version - A deity or mysterious entity. Look no further if you want a creepy and complex psychological anime.
report Recommended by RenaPsychoKiller
Small rural villages always hide the most disturbing secrets: murder, madness and... demons? Cicadas, mysteries and gore in non-linear formality. They both involve shoolgirls, policemen and their different handling of events. A multi-POV story with plot twists.

If one is looking for a dark horror, somethig that pulls on the senses, but not necisarily something that makes you to afraid to go to sleep at night, perhaps these are it. Each is unique in their own way, not to mention they both have a crisp style, floating from dark to light, a gothic feeling through the whole thing.
report Recommended by Yemi_Hikari
Although both of these shows have quite different seting (the first is Magical Girl and the second is Supernatural Horror), they are very similar in their performance, since both series explore the inner "madness" of the person and the use of violence to save from abusive people. Expect also many yandere characters and bulging eyes.
report Recommended by RobertBobert
Both are violent, bloody series that show the dark side of humanity in an unflinching manner.

Repeat... repeat again... and again... Both Anime utilize a storytelling idea utilizing alternate universes, but the stories unfolding in each transpire in a manner where the viewer is left wondering what happened - a mystery element, but each world has a different who-done-it to leave viewers intrigued.

I know these two series may seem not similar at all- Higurashi's action takes place only in one small village and there are only a few characters, while Code Geass talks about a world conflict and have a lot of charas. But, in my opinion, both animes have the same message- you have to trust your friends, and take responsibility for your sins.

I know they aren't very similiar, but both are really beautiful. Main girl characters, Rena and Nagisa are very similiar (the same seiyuu, brown hair, and they are so cute!). And Higurashi and Clannad shows happy and funny moments and sad moments too. All girls in both series looks happy, but they have some sad memories too. Eh, sorry for my English.

Both are set in a small village when a time for a local festival is approaching, and one of the main characters is a priestess that has to perform in it, both involve a kind of time travel related to the village's beliefs, and both Kimi no Na wa and Higurashi second season have the same tension and are exciting in the same way when a small group of friends is trying to prevent something from happening and getting other people to cooperate.

Both of them are horror anime with their main strong point being the plot. The gruesome killings from the Kiseijuu can also be found in Higurashi or even more. There is another strong resemblance with Kiseijuu but it's a huge spoiler so only those that watched Higurashi will understand.

Both have very well-developed characters and psychological themes. Both also present themselves as a type of genre but turn out to be something else deeper.
report Recommended by Inudrew
Both series are horror and have grotesque depictions of the main characters while suffering. Also, the character designs are pretty similar to one another. Both anime try, kinda unsuccessfully, to include specs of comedy in between incidents without interfering with the main plot or the horror aspect though. Amazing gore and atmosphere in both.

Both are psychological violence that have characters with cute designs are overtaken by fatal violent encounters.

Both are taking place in one city/village. They also have a mystery murderer, some bloody scene and violence. Fate stay night is a lighter anime than higurashi, but if you like the other one, you probably like the other.

Both of these shows have a combination of sweet and innocent moments but before you know it turns on its head and turns disturbing fast. You will be standing on your feet for much of the scenes wondering what is going on and what will eventually happen. They like to delay the darker moments and you can differently feel the fear the characters of both series are experiencing under different circumstances. Both shows follow a group of children trying to solve a mystery. The characters have a similar feel around them, and the shows are of the same genres (Horror & Mystery).

If you liked The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, you would find Higurashi no Naku Koro ni to be quite similar, as the atmosphere in both series is the same. Both series start off very ordinary as the characters go through their normal school lives, but as the series progresses, the plotline goes from boring and ordinary to quite fascinating and extraordinary. The whole genre of these two series is practically identical, so I would recommend Higurashi no Naku Koro ni and its sequel, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai, for anyone who enjoys mystery and a litte horror, and anyone who had fun watching The  read more

Let us delve into the human psyche and the horrors that entail. Both of these series tackle this element within the plot, in a manner which might be best described as macabre, and yet despite this being the best way to describe the manner in which the series delve into the subject matter, neither series is some slasher film as it handles the macabre subject matter in a manner that draws the viewer in rather than simply going for the gross out factor. So, welcome to the delightful horrors of these two series.

Firstly, I'll bring up the locale. The Country of Jewels, just like Hinamizawa, is an isolated community with very few notable people and a small area that the protagonists will explore. Occasionally, some outsiders will come and go, but the insiders cannot move out for fear of being attacked by some sort of external or internal force. In Houseki no Kuni, the outsiders usually attack the insiders though, whereas Higurashi's protagonist is an outsider himself. Now, speaking of the protagonists, both Keiichi Maebara and Phosphophyllite are people who do not have many natural talents, but have a crucial, information-related task assigned to them by one of  read more

I think the idea of despair as presented by Danganronpa is somewhat similar to Higurashi's general feeling. I think both anime have a relatively similar atmosphere, one filled with murders, mysteries and conspiracies; and a generally similar level of edginess and cruelty.

FLCL and Higurashi are very similar because you will not have any idea about what is going on whatsoever. The only diffrerence is that FLCL could be called very bizarre and Higurashi is rather slightly extremely grotesque.

Both are set in past Japan and portray Japanese society in a negative way, with a focus on how youth is affected by decisions adults make. Apart from that, both are very reliant on shock factor, highly violent and painful to watch at times as well. In both you see what friendship truly means, whether it's hiding a corpse or supporting each other after your best friend was fusilated.

Both anime have a very innocent look, which contradicts their true nature, because these anime are quite dark. In both anime, the main protagonists are young girls. Also, in both anime, there are several timelines with the events changing in each of them. Apart from these, both anime have a similar feel to them.

Boogiepop And Other is a horror anime series with a story that has a similar set up to Higurashi. All of the characters profiled in each episode are in some way linked to each other; a mysterious beam of light, a series of murders that took place 5 years before the anime, and Boogiepop, the "Angel of Death". Boogiepop Phantom, like Higurashi, needs to be paid attention to closely so you can be able to fully grasp what is going

Both involve time loops with one girl returning to the same past to change the future. Both involve certain rules to change the past. While Ushinawareta Mirai is more slice of life with a hint of science fiction, Higurashi is more horror. Also Higurashi's story is much more fleshed out than Ushinawareta mirai and has better character development.

Time paradox? Yep. Both of these series have really confusing time lines, and a lot of mystery, that will have you wondering what even happened prior to the main story line. Note: While both contain some violence, Higurashi has a lot of gore, and is not for the faint of heart.

Both anime tell about how children life in a complicated & dark world. In Gunslinger Girl (GG) the children follow the orders of the adults while in Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (HnNKn) the children are free-willed, even so the children in these two series can still cause severe damage to their world & can even kill each other. For GG, it doesn't provide a lot of atmosphere for children to have fun & play with friends like HnNKn did.

Okay, this might sound weird, but both deal heavily with the concept of breaking out of the cycle. A major plot point to both shows revolve changing the attitudes of their community as well as dispelling old grudges and discriminations towards characters caught in the crossfire of strifes that started way before their time.

Both of these animes start off like different genres, with a sweet, innocent facade, then quickly bring out the skeletons in the closet. The anime then slowly unravels, pulling back the layers to keep the viewer thinking. If you like some intrigue, cute girls with weapons, and plenty of action, look no further.

Both have this feeling of "moe, gore and harem" with them and are based on visual novels. Grisaia no Kajitsu's first ep ended up just like Higurashi would, with this dark feeling on it. I must admit I was going to drop it, but for some reason I ended up watching the whole ep, and I'm glad I did. It's not so bad, however, it has this feeling of "getting worse during next episodes" that I hate. I guess that if you liked Higurashi you'll at least have this nostalgia feeling with Grisaia, since they're pretty similar.

While the studios are different, both anime series draw the audience into a mystery that requires some answers. They both give the same task for the audience, and that is to create theories to understand the events that happened before later episodes provide the answers. The premise is nearly the same, where it's about a protagonist that ventures into a new setting and discovers the mystery that encircles a specific day. From there, unforeseen events are beyond the characters' control and lead them from one event to another. This is the same ideology, which prove, that parallel worlds exist. After few episodes, there's reset and the plot is going diffrent way (including protagonist and one of main characters) and, in the very end, all storyline pieces are connecting to one. Once you dig in a little, there's this feeling of wrongness in the atmosphere and the characters. Murder mysteries that carry on for generations, curses, murderous impulses bequeathed upon people for X reason, usage of instruments of torture and murder, that sort of thing. The Higurashi series is far more bloody and maimy as it does follow through with maiming, murder and mayhem and we get to see a lot of that to a graphic degree, whereas Crime Edge is more about characters wielding cursed instruments of murder and controlling their murderous impulses by only imitating murder in order to stay sane.

They both screw with you right from the get-go. Where Ga-Rei becomes somewhat normal after the first two episodes, Higurashi just keeps it up all the way to the finish line without ever stopping.

Both animes are about a guy surrounded by many cute girls. Both protagonists join a club and both experience weird things during their school life. They also both attend to a school situated in a creepy location.

Déjà vu and unexpected deaths. Nice visuals and characters. Misleading shows which alternate joy/harmless moments with thrill moments.

These anime involve a large group of kawaii moe friends experiencing the painful events leading up to their emotional breakdowns. There is also a unique blend of comedy sprinkled in here and there. The true meaning behind both series' plots are not revealed until their respective second seasons. The aforementioned plots share a striking resemblance that shall not be spoiled, however Higurashi is for the most part a horror mystery series while Little Busters is a light-hearted dramedy.

Both are happy on the outside but you can sense a darker plot forming

Both have: - Male protagonist who tries to uncover mysteries - People who believe in curses - School setting with humor - Supernatural elements - Horror

Both anime start off seemingly as a slice of life, but actually are both situated in worlds that have more to it than meets the eye, with antagonists in the shadows aiming for the main character's life. Both anime have the main character grabbing a baseball bat to defend himself when he feels threatened by something observing him from a distance. Both main characters have cute girls attempting to kill them constantly for a deeper reason than just mindless violence. Both shows revolve around the theme of friendship and youth, with a mystery element.

Characters in both fight against their fate and dare to make their lives their own even when struck with unimaginably sad truths. ...The obvious difference, of course, is that Higurashi has its basis in horror while Tutu steps into fairytale. While that may seem like complete opposite sides of a spectrum, the substance beneath is an intelligent design that becomes more twisted and beautiful as the story progresses. A glaring hope defines both these titles.

These 2 shows are very similar and i couldn't believe i didn't see it as a recommendation. One guy surrounded by crazy girls.....trust me there similar.

several of the characters from higurashi are in one of the episodes of this series. While there is unfortunately no yuri or even shoujo ai, the feeling you get when you watch it is pretty much the same. so are some of the themes.

Both animes are very strange and somewhat horrifying at times. They also have the ability to alternate between the mundane and much more intense scenarios. Both have superb characters, though those in BRS tend to be more believable and those in Higurashi tend to be more unique.

Same atmosphere and both are supernatural. Both contain blood scenes.

Both the Aoi Bungaku Series and the Higurashi series are dark in their own way, and both anime stories consists of arcs, which are smaller storylines that helps piece together the anime as a whole.

Most people think that Higurashi is a violent anime. But I think Kara no Kyoukai is even more so. While Kara no Kyoukai's plot development is not as strong as Higurashi's, it offers better action scenes with good graphics and an even better soundtrack. Both are high quality anime.

11Eyes has that same horror/mystery feel that Higurashi provides. It's always making you wonder "What the hell is going on?!" And it eventually tells you, as the plot picks up.

Both have lots of gore and senseless violence also they both have characters with a hidden past.

Moe-ish/standard anime character design while story slowly develops into something psychologically darker than you'd expect, judging by its visuals.

Both male main characters look kind of gloomy (i can say they look kind of similar) and there are girls around them who do crazy stuff, and because of that they do crazy stuff, too. Blood involved. Stories are actually VERYY different but i don't want to spoil :)

While they are both EXTREMELY different, they both involve cute characters(...Well, in Pussycat, mainly just the cat) being bloody and crazy.

Both focuses on the paranormal and scary aspects of storytelling. While Higurashi can be downright wicked, gruesome, and horrifyingly disgusting, Ghost Hunt dwells more on a Scooby-Doo type of investigations that can be just as scary and horrifying.

If you have noticed the end and you liked that searching for the paradise or the perfect end of the word you might also like this anime. but you have to wacht it in summer, not in another season, don't forget its a horror/spatter story so its made to make you feel mad.

The two shows definitely have some similarities. Both have kids as the main character/characters, and both contain a mix of light comedic moments overshadowed by some seriously dark stuff. Kuroshitsuji is probably the lighter of the 2 (although it definitely has its share of disturbing moments)

Both concepts are a bit twisted. (I would recommend reading Aku no Hana because the anime isn't done yet.) I love them both and thought that they fell into similar categories because of the darkness of them both.
