Higurashi no Naku Koro ni

The "Infinite Eight" plot of Season 2 of Melancholy will give you a whole new appreciation for Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (and vice-versa). That I can guarantee.

Most of Haruhi season 2 contained a Time Loop arc (Endless Eight), similar to Higurashi's Endless June (which I have dubbed Endless Six), however, Haruhi's was much more repetitive and annoying.

However, keep in mind that Higurashi contains copious amounts of High Octane Nightmare Fuel, which is not present in Haruhi. At all.

Higurashi is more or less Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya  spiked with a dark creepy and often times horrifying twist....the way Higurashi's like the melancholy of haruhi suzumiya is that the series features a comedic group of youths who are in a club lead by a wild strong willed girl  and they set out to do a whole lotta random goofy shit during the fun slice of life moments..Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is basically just Higurashi without the creepy horror stuff..so if you only like higurashi  for the funny silly moments  and school club activity themes   check out Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya..if you want a creepy horror version of Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, check out Higurashi read more

Both series are are a mix of supernatural and mystery and they also have a particular focus around time loops with each event being slightly different than the last one that was shown and trying figure out why such a thing is happening.

Booth shows start somewhat normal, until things start to get downright creepy.
Both Mayoiga and Higurashi have an eerie atmosphere.
Booth villages (Hinamizawa in Higurashi / Nanakimura in Magyoiga) are quite mysterious.
The characters are also not what they seem at first.

Probably the most similar show: the uneasy atmosphere is present in both of us.  

Mayoiga and Higurashi are set in a mysterious village (Nanaki and Hinamizawa), filled with many legends (the Onigafuchi myth and the legends about Nanaki) and both of them include a creepy folksong.

In both of them, all the characters try to hide their unclear past and in both of them, the main character is not from the village...

I have only watched the episodes out at the time of wright this but from what I have seen so far both this series and Higurashi seem very similar in tone.

While I was watching the first episode, Mayoiga was remembering me all time Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (also Shiki, but it's most paranormal). Both series happen in a world apart village, with very characters, deaths, mystery, the main characters isn't from this village, crazy people... If you like the "genre" strange villages, it will like you.

What I liked about Higurashi was the way it spun a tale, even though it could be a tad violent at times. The storyline was one that kept you guessing, and I had been looking for something of simular storyline, perhaps not as violent or into the horror genera as that. I found that in Durarara!!... which has it's own unexpected twists into the realm of stretching the believability in just the right ways.

Both have a big range of diverse characters, all of which play a central role and have their own background stories.
Both have complex storylines (both are mindfuck, although in different ways).
Both have a supernatural element to them (Higurashi = Gods, DRRR! = Myths).
Both very enjoyable.

A bit of a weird recommendation, but if you like the aspect of constantly not knowing what's going on, constant thinking, and mind games, I recommend these series.
Both have a dark theme, but Higurashi is A LOT more graphic and brutal. There is quite a lot of death and injuries in both series.

Higurashi and Durarara!! have a pretty unique approach to storytelling and creating and solving mysteries. Both these series involve a boy moving in to a new place and soon they discover the darkness lurking around in that place. Rumors play a significant role in the mystery part. The characters in these two series are quite well developed. All the important characters in the series are given special attention. The characters also have their own secrets and interesting back-stories. These two series also have elements of yandere. While Watching both these series my excitement level was pretty high.

Both of these shows feature time loops where the same plot is acted out, taking a different turn each time, and frequently overlaps, with things being told slightly differently. Higurashi is a lot more bright colors and slapstick humor, whereas Tatami Galaxy is somewhat darker humor, with less emphasis on little kids killing each other and laughing.

If I could, I would just get people to play the original visual novels of these games instead.

Higurashi is the real bread winner, imo. The visual novel is one of the most eerie, foreboding pieces of media I have ever played. It does an AMAZING job of building up the world surrounding Hinamizawa and the mysteries surrounding it, constantly examining characters from fresh new angles. The anime is pretty accurate to the source material and definitely worth a watch, imo. It can get confusing as the story is split into arcs that all take place in alternative realities but really, stick through it. It's worth it. 

Danganronpa is a visual novel in a similar vein and is also mystery oriented, with less focus on reality and more bat shit crazy antics.  read more

Horror anime which seem to rely more on psychological shock than visual shock, though you might get some of the visual as well. A similar "what the hell" mentality is incited when watching either for the first time. There are characters who can be described as yandere in both with a single-minded dedication to their love.

Psychological, mindfvck, thriller anime for a mature audience. They creep you out and mess with your brain.
Both, in one way or another, involve mysteries, split personalities, paranoia, and death.
You'll find intriguing stories, a dark atmosphere, a sometimes hopeless vibe, few light-hearted moments... and an unconventional deity.
Even though Higurashi has several protagonists and SEL only one, in both anime the girls are young, cute and seemingly harmless, but they have secrets and can be very scary at times. Higurashi is way more violent and bloody, but Lain also has some unsettling scenes.

Both centre around the unique features of a small, remote village and the events that have transpired there. Kamisama Dolls is less severe about it, since the majority of the series takes place in a more urban setting and deals with the repercussions, whereas Higurashi definitely tends toward the worst case scenario -- but as each piece of the backstory for Kamisama Dolls is revealed, it becomes increasing obvious that it's not exactly sunshine and lollipops either.

If Steins Gate and Higurashi had a child, it would be Boku dake. Boku dake has the same dark vibes as Higurashi. The aim of both is to stop a tragedy by gaining new knowledge with each iteration of events that have happened.

Both involve:
- A series of murders and disappearances happening in a city/village
- Teenagers dealing with paranoia, psychosis, drugs, suicide
- Same scene told from the POV of different characters
- Non-linear story with a hopeless, desperate feel
- Gore, also similarly toned down/darkened in the censored version
- A deity or mysterious entity.
Look no further if you want a creepy and complex psychological anime.

Graphically, Boogiepop and Higurashi couldn't be further appart from each other; while Boogiepop has a grim world design and color palette, with realistic looking characters, Higurashi is filled cute lolis and bright colors. However, both shows tell stories with plenty of despair, mistery, murders and disappearances. Now, that alone wouldn't make any of these shows a particularly good recommendation for the other... The main link in the style of these shows is the narrative. Both make use of non-linear storytelling and change of character's focus, building the plot slowly, bit by bit of information. Boogiepop is harder to grasp, but Higurashi also takes longer to start making sense. If you've watched Boogiepop and wants to watch Higurashi, be aware it's plot complexity takes some time to be fully realised, if you've watched Higurashi and pland to watch Boogiepop, be aware that Boogiepop don't have (initial) scenes with cheerful scenarious and characters. read more

Boogiepop Phanton is a horror anime series with a story that has a similar set up to Higurashi. All of the characters profiled in each episode are in some way linked to each other; a mysterious beam of light, a series of murders that took place 5 years before the anime, and Boogiepop, the "Angel of Death". Boogiepop Phantom, like Higurashi, needs to be paid attention to closely so you can be able to fully grasp what is going on.

Both anime deal with a supposed supernatural entity that might punish you or kill you. (Boogiepop in Boogiepop Phantom and Oyashiro-sama in Higurashi)
Both feature heavily sensitive scenes showing the worst of mankind, like gore, blackmail, gaslighting, explicit children abuse, etc.
Both feature characters losing the ability to distinguish reality from hallucinations.
Both have mind-exploding plot-twists.
Both are excellent psychological horrors.
AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, the are both stories that focuses on telling you similar events from different points of view.

I really loved both of them.

Each is unique in their own way, not to mention they both have a crisp style, floating from dark to light, a gothic feeling through the whole thing.

Although both of these shows have quite different seting (the first is Magical Girl and the second is Supernatural Horror), they are very similar in their performance, since both series explore the inner "madness" of the person and the use of violence to save from abusive people. Expect also many yandere characters and bulging eyes.

Both Anime utilize a storytelling idea utilizing alternate universes, but the stories unfolding in each transpire in a manner where the viewer is left wondering what happened - a mystery element, but each world has a different who-done-it to leave viewers intrigued.

I know these two series may seem not similar at all- Higurashi's action takes place only in one small village and there are only a few characters, while Code Geass talks about a world conflict and have a lot of charas. But, in my opinion, both animes have the same message- you have to trust your friends, and take responsibility for your sins.

I know they aren't very similiar, but both are really beautiful. 
Main girl characters, Rena and Nagisa are very similiar (the same seiyuu, brown hair, and they are so cute!).
And Higurashi and Clannad shows happy and funny moments and sad moments too.
All girls in both series looks happy, but they have some sad memories too.

These are series that deal with the effect of violence and abuse when experienced by children. While Higurashi no Naku Koro ni might be more graphic and more consistently so, Shadow Star Narutaru's later episodes are extremely disturbing. Both series force the viewer into a tour de force in which the duality of innocence and horror is pervasively effective.

Both Shadow Star Narutaru and When They Cry are anime series that apear to be "cute", a little childish (more so in Narutaru]), but can change on a dime and turn into horrible horror animes! Terrible, disturbing, and gruesome things happen in both of these anime series. Narutaru tends to cut away when the worst things are happening, or shows it in the shadows, or from an interesting/odd point of veiw (good use of camera angles) so you don't acually see everything happen. However it's still very compelling (I'd argue more so then actually seeing it), however it still is very graphic.  When They Cry keeps the the camera with whatever horrible thing is happening! Both series accomplish what they want, regarding with showing or not showing the horrible things. 

Both series are very creepy, but start off a little childish. Both series have GREAT music, and use of music, that really sets the mood. Both series are very disturbing, and will freak you out/scare you. Both series are part of the "killer loli" genre (they have children getting killed and children killers, mostly girls).  Both series are great horror animes, and have lots of violence. Sadly  Shadow Star Narutaru has bad animation/art (still passable), while When They Cry has great animation and art.  If you love one of these, check out the other. Fans of one series, will love the other! read more

Both are set in a small village when a time for a local festival is approaching, and one of the main characters is a priestess that has to perform in it, both involve a kind of time travel related to the village's beliefs, and both Kimi no Na wa and Higurashi second season have the same tension and are exciting in the same way when a small group of friends is trying to prevent something from happening and getting other people to cooperate.

Both of them are horror anime with their main strong point being the plot. The gruesome killings from the Kiseijuu can also be found in Higurashi or even more. There is another strong resemblance with Kiseijuu but it's a huge spoiler so only those that watched Higurashi will understand.

Both series are horror and have grotesque depictions of the main characters while suffering. Also, the character designs are pretty similar to one another. 
Both anime try, kinda unsuccessfully, to include specs of comedy in between incidents without interfering with the main plot or the horror aspect though.
Amazing gore and atmosphere in both.

Both of these shows have a combination of sweet and innocent moments but before you know it turns on its head and turns disturbing fast.

You will be standing on your feet for much of the scenes wondering what is going on and what will eventually happen. They like to delay the darker moments and you can differently feel the fear the characters of both series are experiencing under different circumstances.

Both shows follow a group of children trying to solve a mystery. The characters have a similar feel around them, and the shows are of the same genres (Horror & Mystery).

If you liked The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, you would find Higurashi no Naku Koro ni to be quite similar, as the atmosphere in both series is the same. Both series start off very ordinary as the characters go through their normal school lives, but as the series progresses, the plotline goes from boring and ordinary to quite fascinating and extraordinary. The whole genre of these two series is practically identical, so I would recommend Higurashi no Naku Koro ni and its sequel, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai, for anyone who enjoys mystery and a litte horror, and anyone who had fun watching The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. read more

Let us delve into the human psyche and the horrors that entail. Both of these series tackle this element within the plot, in a manner which might be best described as macabre, and yet despite this being the best way to describe the manner in which the series delve into the subject matter, neither series is some slasher film as it handles the macabre subject matter in a manner that draws the viewer in rather than simply going for the gross out factor. So, welcome to the delightful horrors of these two series.
