Two hardcore hack and slash shows. While Berserk is most likely more on the "darker" side of the two, both are still definitely a guy's "beat the crap out of them" type of show. Brutal, but each has a touch of emotion here and there.

Note: The first episodes of both include villain 'SPOILERS' required for this recommendation. Read with caution if you know nothing~ ---- Both shows begin in a very similar manner, with teaser first episodes where monsters exist. Then, they jump into lengthy flashback arcs where there aren't monsters and political/gangster intrigue is focused on. Characterisation heavy excellence. The similarities don't end there: the most obvious similarity is the way two best friends' relationship worsens over the course of the story until the best of friends become the worst of enemies. Protagonists become antagonists. While not identical (Berserk is set during medieval times, where as Gungrave is about gangsters), the  read more

If the nightmare fuel, eclipse-esque monster designs and gore did not already make it clear that Berserk was inspired HEAVILY by Devilman, the last few episodes most certainly do... for entirely different reasons. Seriously: after finishing Crybaby, there can be little doubt over which work was most directly responsible when Miura came up with his own series. Thanks to Crybaby, I got to understand how Griffith came to be, as well as watching something quite special. Can't ask for much more than that, really: enjoyment and insight.

Both shows that are very serious, gritty and down to earth and based on somewhat classic manga series. Berserk in particular was a huge trend setter and has had a major influence on the 'dark fantasy' genre.

It's safe to say Berserk anime fans were left shocked & traumatised by its haunting finale. You get that feeling on a regular basis with Shingeki as characters are torn to shreds before your eyes. Not as extreme (or as sexual!) as Berserk at its most (in)famous, no, but you get the point. Images that won't leave will remain imprinted in your brain, after viewing--ye be warned! In terms of their settings, Berserk and Shingeki are both set during medieval times. Aside from Shingeki's 'Spiderman' way of doing battle with gigantic threats, you're gonna get a STRONG taste of bleak realism from medieval/fantasy epics, here. Unless  read more

We have the ability to think, we have the ability to reflect, we have the ability to dream. How about Miura's Berserk and Urasawa's Monster? Alhough dissimilar in plot content wise and settings wise, both Berserk and Monster attempted, and did portray: Human nature. Granted, there are huge differences in setting and presentation, but both center around one man's quest for ultimate power and the many sacrifices that come with this struggle. Political intrigue, war strategy and tactics, along with individual prowess on the battlefield dominate the storyline.

These "adult only" anime are indeed similar in how they mix strong elements such as violence, gore, sword fights, and sadistic villains with romance, sex, and drama. In both anime the main characters are a fearsome swordsman and a strong-tempered female fighter, which is one of the reasons why the relationship between Jubei & Kagero instantly reminded me of Gatsu & Caska. Needless to say, both are great to watch for fans of the genre.

Sword wielding badass and a lot of blood.
report Recommended by Lucek
Both have lots of bloods and guts, as well as some excellent action. Berserk could be summed up as a Medieval Hellsing
report Recommended by IAmZim
Guts is essentially a Kenshiro clone. If you like the pragmatic nature and insane destructive power of one, it goes without saying that you'll like the other. Both series also feature ridiculously powerful enemies who must be overcome by the protagonist. Berserk lacks HnK's brilliant sense of humor, however.

Both are old animes with lots of violence, action and violence on it. Two masterpieces of the gender and same goes for the manga that you won't stop reading/watching before it's over.
report Recommended by Alexiell
Both are reasonably serious shows with a focus on political intrigue, back-stabbing nobles and how cruel people can be. But Berserk is set in a fantasy universe with demons and monsters, with a lot of battles, whilst RoV is a historical anime that takes place in France, documenting the beginnings of the French Revolution. Also, Griffith looks awfully similar to Lady Oscar (all that long, fluffy hair...)

I'm surprised im the first one who made this suggestion. Goblin Slayer is so much like Berserk. Just like Berserk, this is another Brutal, Dark fantasy with Blood, gore, rape, and a pretty cruel world. The leads are also very similar in the way that they are both are ruthless and motivated by revenge. They both show no mercy to their enemies and both have a very dark past. They are also not that good at socializing with others. There are more examples that i will edit once more episodes come out.

Both series focus around a couple of people who have a strong friendship bond and would do anything to help each other until something or someone else interferes, with the resulting actions causing an immediate shift from strong friendship to hatred. Not to mention both series also start with the end and then show the events leading up to what happened at the start. Like Kenshin, it is a psychologically realistic exploration the motivations effects of the killing life on one's mind and state of being, albeit in a very different ways. Likewise the drive and effect of ideology are explored but instead of the deadening of the heart and soul as we find in Kenshin, in Beserk it is the corrupting effects of power and ambition. Both have compelling narratives, and while Beserk may not have the lavish animation we find in Kenshin, it is still an immersing and engrossing watch. And both have compelling narratives albeit in highly different settings.

But what realy makes these series similar are the characters. Griffith=Lelouch because they are the tactitian and guts=Suzaku because they are the soldier. Both shows take GAR to a whole new level. Who doesn't like seeing buffed men fight with each other right? Both of these are filled with fight scenes and manliness. Though Berserk is more bloody so if you're a pussy you might wanna reconsider. They're both awesome though so you don't wanna miss out.

To truly understand just why Shin Angyo Onshi (SAO) *IS* the Korean Berserk, you would have to read the manhwa (which, by the way, arguably has better art than Berserk). Seinen excellence. The SAO movie is best described as being like Berserk's first episode: before the flashback arc that filled in the blanks... just without the other 24 episodes. Both anime are, in essence, incomplete manga/manhwa teasers, but this is far more true in SAO's case since the back-story of its lead, Munsu - whom is VERY similar to Guts from Berserk in terms of VENGEANCE motivation - only gets revealed further down the  read more

Xin is basically the teenage version of Guts except that the entire series focuses heavily on him growing and improving into a future general whereas Guts just did it in a few episodes. Both are very action packed, deal with the concept of military, strategy and death (Kingdom does a lot more with this) and are just fun to watch.

Yugioh GX can be described as Pokemon meets Magic meets Berserk to fans in general but as for Yugioh fans, more like Yugioh meets Berserk meets Evangelion. The dimension world arc is somehow similar to Berserk in a similar fashion where it gets dark and creepy along with people becoming sacrificed. Judai's relationship with his friends and co is a reminiscent of Guts and Griffith but in a shonen manner.

FF7 was said to be similar to Berserk in terms of characters with a story alike. Cloud is basically like Guts whereas Sephiroth is to be like Griffith as for example. It's great to see Berserk because Berserk has the best story out of all of the manga/anime and it too has sword fights as good as FF7. The only difference is that Berserk is pure adult oriented than FF7 because of its contents but its worth a try.

If you like politics and military tatics in your anime these two are for you! -They are both historical dramas set in the middle ages -They both have a huge focus on tatics and politics and have a secondary character who serves to explore these themes (Griffith in Berserk and Narsus in Arslan Senki) -They are both realistic although they have some fantasy elements (Berserk is stronger in this aspect) -They both show a war were the MCs have little chance of winning. Although they are similar Berserk in its final episodes is very fantasy focused with some (greatly designed) demons

Both Basilisk and Berserk have a dark, violent, emotional and tragic scent about them. They are both dark and mysterious. The stories on the other hand, are not much alike. Basilisk is focusing on the rivalry between two ninja tribes and Berserk follows the life of Guts, the Dark Swordsmen. But none the less, I am sure that if you like the one, you will like the other due the feeling they both emit.

You won't believe how how many similarities you will find between Akatsuki no Yona and the famous Berserk by Miura Kentarou - plenty. Su-Won - a very handsome and intelligent antagonist of the series has a lot in common with Griffith. They both have very similar characteristics, are great warriors, strategists and emperors. Both are destined for greater things. Hak is very much like Guts, tall, dark-skinned, strong, wields a powerful weapon and has earned a title of the strongest general in the kingdom. The love triangle between Yona, Su-Won and Hak resembles the same love complexity between Casca, Guts and Griffith. Casca and Yona are strong women protagonists.  read more

Both are dark fantasy anime. Simply, they both contain the use of magic or other supernatural forces that may lead to negative consequences. While Berserk has darker themes from the get-go, Delicious In Dungeon feels more lighthearted but progresses over time. Both also have themes of character transformation, but going into too much detail about how they relate in that way contains major spoilers.

In each show, one of the main characters is a conqueror who aims to rule the land, alongside their own group of warriors, who also get a fair share of the spotlight. The fights, strategies and betrayals that ensue have a similar vibe. Ten no Haoh has a focus on deadly martial arts styles, while Berserk's combat is more grounded, at least initially. Bastard‼ and Berserk are adult fantasy series with graphic violence, but from different subgenres of fantasy. Berserk is a serious, medieval fantasy anime that understands warfare. It might be an incomplete adaptation of the manga, which barely covers its long narrative, but this arc is a great anime. Bastard‼ is a comedic, sword and sorcery fantasy anime that never misses an opportunity for echhi despite its violence. It is a trashy series that targets a specific audience and it does this very well. If you have the correct expectation then this might be a recommendation for you.

I felt like part of Yu Gi Oh were inspired by Berserk by many reasons: -Solid art work -Bishonen and Bishoujo looks -Dark tone whereas in Yugioh, minus the blood unless if you read the manga adaptation -Desire to change the world is the wish in some of the characters -Anti-Heroes do whatever it takes to change the world -Strategies and All out attack are employed but Yugioh is more card like whereas Berserk is realistic Plus I cannot help but compare Kaiba and Blue Eyes to Griffith and Yugi and Black Magician to Guts in terms of personality, motivation, rivalry, and color.

Youma is basically the short version of Berserk. Both are dark fantasy anime with a similar premise; we have the badass protagonist, Hikage=Guts, and his rival friend Marou=Griffith, both of whom have a complicated friendship. The protagonist seeks vengeance on their "best friend," who becomes a "demon lord" and rules over monsters after attempting to murder the protagonist. On his way to meet his "friend," he must battle several talking monsters in bloody battles. The art, particularly the monsters, looks similar. Both have the same calm and dark atmosphere, as well as monsters, sword fights, and a lot of gore.

I need Berserk fans to see what a real revenge story is like. Both stories have a really cool main character who uses a sword to fight dragons. Each one has a magic system as well. Both series also have female characters. Personally, I was way more invested in Ragna trying to defeat all the dragons than Guts trying to kill Griffin, but its still ok, imo.

When watching Mikazuki in his Gundam, I get a lot of Guts vibe from him making me think that IBO is inspired from Berserk. Another note is that Mcgillis shares the same VA as Griffith and both are Char Clones.

Jormungand is basically Berserk in reverse. You have the main trio of Berserk but all gender swapped: Female Griffith, female one-eyed baddass seeking revenge aka Guts aka best waifu, tan-skinned warrior boy who gets thrown into war due poverty aka male Casca. Female Griffith here is the only one who is more "literal" so to speak, but I digress since I don't want to spoil anything, I will just mention her ambitions and target of affections are somewhat the polar opposite of what Berserk's Griffith is, if this might spark your curiosity.

Both anime revolve around the relationship of two friends and the inner workings of the society they live in. Both anime are also particular dark in nature and the story takes some similar twists and turns. Berserk differs being set in medieval time with a larger focus on action. While Gankutsuo is more psychological and dramatic with its futuristic sci-fi setting. So, if your a fan of dark anime with a significant level of characterisation, that revolves around the relationship of its two central characters, it's likely you'll love both anime.

Dark, soul-crushing action mixed beautifully with deep emotional drama. Main characters who are known throughout the land as legendary fighters, but are, on a deeper level, lone wolves who struggle with the purpose of living and fighting. Through existentialist themes and emotionally charged soundtracks, both shows accentuate the beauty in bleakness. Casshern Sins does this in an episodic post-apocalyptic scifi while Berserk does this in a more overarching medieval fantasy.

Think about character development, story, action, emotions, psychology, music, own art. Now think in two animes that have the maximum of each, where this characteristics complete each other, the animes you are looking are NGE and Berserk. Evangelion have a very depressive side which not all do like, while Berserk is more action oriented. This is the main difference (besides story etc). Both are anime that don't simply pass from memories with the time (in a good way), masterpieces in my opinion.

There's similarities with the surreal, disturbing imagery and the unwelcoming medieval setting, particularly in the prologue and second half of Berserk (and even more with the manga's Conviction Arc). They both deal with the long-con/unavoidable deal with the devil. There are themes like the unfair distribution of power (from God or otherwise), and how a dramatic shift in that power would affect others, shared here. Griffith an Jeanne have similar transformations both thematically and physically. Also, Void kinda looks like the dick-devil.

Both have great theme songs. Both animes focus on various characters from the underworld. with splashes of the occult and the supernatural.

Both have the same objective of killing demons or fantastic creatures. The drama and suspense is seen in both . The difference between them is that Berserk is set during medieval time and Supernatural is set in a modern time. Also, Supernatural is an adaptation of a series with the same name.

Both anime are very dark and mature, set during the Dark Ages, and deal with the harsh reality of life and death in a feudal society, with Asura set in feudal Japan and Berserk set in a feudal England-like setting.

Two brutal period dramas, with supernatural themes. Both stories follow charismatic male leads, Griffith and Alexander, whom command armies during times of war and upheaval within the monarchy. Both explore issues such as betrayal and religious conflict. Two incisive, engaging sagas.

Stories of struggling swordsman in a country where people have been affected by war and demons. Guts & Hyakkimaru are very tragic characters who are destined to battle the evils of men and demon alike.

It's just more mindfuck, but is based on the same premise - the will of the Gods are irrational and the characters have to adapt to this new reality. You are kept in the dark most of the time, in Ergo Proxy, which may be good or bad.

Medieval battles set in China, slight fantasy elements but no horror or monsters(apart from the monstrous legendary warriors, and berserk anime does finish just as it goes all 'monsterish') and based more on reality(Sun Tzu's Art Of War etc) and has realistic epic battles consisting of thousand strong armies, genius generals/strategists and unstoppable warriors, betrayal/loyalty/rivalries, political intrigue, philosophical overtones, important and not just throwaway support characters, epic story.. need i go on? A real hidden gem that all berserk fans should enjoy.

After finishing these two shows, I got a similar feeling, It's the huge potential. Making you hungry! hungry for more storytelling; basically due to their non-linear story and likable main characters which are memorable; Like in berserk we have: Guts, Griffith, Casca, and Corkus. And in HxH we have: Gon, Killua, Kurapika, and Leorio. Both have the same dark themes, friendship, adventures, hardships, fantasy and magic monsters. While the 99 version of HxH still great, I recommend to watch the 2011 version over the old one , So you might wonder why I tied Berserk with the 1999 version of HxH; It's because it has  read more
