Basically if you've seen Utena and loved it, then Penguindrum is a must watch. Both shows are directed by Ikuhara Kunihiko, which means you'll expect to see similar themes and artistic flare.

Both Anime use an animation style that doesn't stick to the norm. There are bright colors and there is a lot of angst from beginning to end. Everyone tries to fight for their dream and wish too.
report Recommended by Yemi_Hikari
The main characters in both series find their worlds turned upside down as strange things happen around them that can't be explained through any real-world logic, but this is also a driving force for both series that real-world logic is turned upside down in different ways.

Mawaru Penquindrum is heavily influenced by the story line for Night on the Galactic Railroad. Knowing the base influence can possibly help the viewer to understand the show more, not to mention understand some of the decisions that the director made with Mawaru Penquindrum. Both deal with a lot of angst and heartache.

Although it's been quite some time since Penguindrum's incest love-tri x stalking love dazzled me, it's the only anime that truly reminds me of Tempest. They both have a love triangle at their cores that crosses over into obsessive love; a 'sister' being caught in the middle as the love of those closest to her pushes them to do anything to gain understanding and protect/avenge. There's this feeling nothing else I've watched quite captures of the balance of the bond shared between two male leads being closer than anyone, yet at risk of being damaged beyond repair by how strongly the feelings for the 'sister'  read more

These two shows are crazy similar. I would question whether or not Yurikuma was written as a sequel. We have similarly painted backgrounds, fluffy, starry, love love accessories, and even crazy similar, over the top, and repeated sequences. And, of course, overreaching metaphors "hidden" in the light yet dark anime. It's bonkers.

Kyousougiga has more action than Mawaru but these animes share several similarities: - Unique sceneries and colorful animation trace an intricate plot that starts as utterly confusing, until the end where explanations finally arrive and the riddles are solved. - Both are plots filled with symbolism, rabbits, a fruit that connects two people and Alice in Wonderland references. - The main message is "bonds" and the true meaning of family where a character disappears and returns later; also it is presented an unconventional affection between two siblings. Great soundtracks and Voice acting...and there are many other similarities which are not mentioned here due to spoilers. M.P. has  read more

Both shows deal with teenagers and their psychology, both have supernatural elements that are used symbolically, both have further and constant symbolism throughout each episode, both address philosophical issues while still having some comedy elements,(and both have a penguin sidekick.)

Very similar style (same director) telling very different stories, but a lot of the themes are carried across both. Interesting characters with their fair share of drama and problems to sort out. Both like to sometimes be abstract with some of the story telling, leaving lots up to interpretation.

Its about changing time/fate to save some one soo dear even if it means sacrificing oneself. So many twist keeps u on the edge of your sit every episode and story lines changes so you dont even know whats going one even when you thought you just had, it. Both Amazing animes.

Bright colors mixed with a dark story line plus the experimental additions to the animation scattered about at nice intervals. The characters are unique and have depth to them and the suspension slowly builds up to a grand finale.

Ikebukuro, mystery, Brains Base. What more do I need to say? They're great.

These Anime take the world and twist the reality. What could possibly be a normally a happy go lucky story line has dark twists to it.

confusing plot line, characters with mysterious past, both aren't from the same studio but have somewhat similar style of animating and unveiling the story

Penguindrum reminded me of Stardriver a lot because of the whacky music and transformation sequences.

Magical girls, two guys, two girls. Both very emotional. Both deal with the theme of "Fate"

Comedy, drama, bishounen, bright colors and nice animation. You need to have a weird sense of humor to appreciate them. Mawaru is a bit more naughty.

Both shows are weird and hard to understand at times. Both of them sport some pretty fantastic symbolism, especially near the end.

As different as they are visually and narratively, it's astonishing how many things these two series have in common. Both shows dress up a heavy story full of existential themes in extremely quirky and occasionally perverted comedy trappings, both have a penchant for rock music and flashy transformation sequences, and both are really well made and creative in general, knitting a lot of emotional ups and downs together into an impressive and convincing whole. If you love one, you're gonna love the other.

I guess both shows are centered plot-wise around terrorism phenomena.

Both anime starts out small and eventually ends up being involved with the fate of the world. Both anime are also about brothers doing everything they can for their sister. Code Geass is more political whereas Penguindrum is more focused on family.

Both shows are wonderfully weird and quirky. They also have similar art in that they're very colourful, pretty and nice to view. Although Mawaru Penguindrum is much more serious in parts, it has a similar air and feel to Arakawa Under the Bridge. :)

Both of these Anime have a non-linar storyline, an obsure mystery element and a supernatural side that one doesn't usually see in an anime series. (I'd go into more depth, but that would mean more spoilers.)

The central theme of fate is present in both works. Apples are representative of something highly symbolic. Both works are very stylistic in their own individual way. Minor presence of romance in both works, more focus on how all the characters connect together.

At first view, Mawaru Penguindrum and Boogiepop Phantom might not seem to have much in common; MP is full of bright colours and has some comedy, while BP is almost solely dark, hopeless and minimalistic. However, if you take a closer look at these two, you might notice, that they have some similarities. Here are the similarities, that I found: 1. MP & BP are both highly psychological anime, that tell stories about several young people with difficult pasts and fates. Each character has his own story of why he became what he is. Most of the characters experienced a psychological trauma in their childhood/youth. 2. They  read more

Fate is a major part of both of these series. Both revolve around actions taken place in the past, and the consequences those have had on the present.

Both shows have an oddity about them. They're not very usual. Both also share a particular artistic style which is pretty and charming. Finally, the two shows are both deep and complex causing the intellectual stimulation of the watcher. Both very worth watching. :)

I don't believe in recommending anime based on similar themes/story beats, but I do like to recommend anime based on how much there is to dig for in the story and how well the story is told. If you enjoy Sonny Boy, I would suggest you check out 'Mawaru Penguindrum'. If you are someone who likes unconventional animes that discards tropes and utilises the medium fully (like 'Sonny Boy') to create surreal imagery/storylines, you will probably like Penguindrum.

Do you want to see a family relationship slowly fall apart, a unique plot execution, intense amount of absurdity and a bit of implied incest? This is the anime for you.

Both start off very light hearted with some comedy and action but as the story developes it turns into a more serious and dark story. Both shows have major changes in the charcthers as they remember their past.I will say though Mawaru Penguindrum is alot more complex then Angel beats and can be hard to follow at times. But overall they're both great and they are both "must see" shows
report Recommended by Ozzey
Family, in it's various forms, is at the heart of these shows. Dark, complex themes (like isolation, death and societal issues) are woven with bright, heart warming ones. Humor is also used to sharply contrast serious moments (in ways that some viewers may even find jarring). The direction is creative and beautiful in both; the music, the art, just everything about these shows elevates them and will pull at the perceptive viewer's heart strings. Still, with such distinctive directors both shows have their own voices and despite feeling related in many ways, they also feel very different upon viewing.

Sad stories featuring an ensemble cast at many points of their lives. Similarly beautiful visuals, and both develop their characters through relationships and pasts rather than real time progression.
report Recommended by IzzyHime
Very similar narrative style. Both of these shows are an absolute mess that actually have good reasons and explanations (Mawaru more-so arguably) for being so, and both stories are riddled with plot twists, dramatic changes in mood/atmosphere, and seems to completely change in style every few episodes.

Both are mindscrewing have deep plot and mystery, involve fate, have comedy moments and cute characters, if you like the atmosphere of mawaru penguin drum or higurashi no naku koro ni and want to watch something that leaves you wondering whats happening , im sure you're going to enjoy both higurashi no naku koro ni (all the seasons) or mawaru penguin drum.

Both mix the mundane and often tragic real life with colorful, crazy casts and bizarre circumstances. Both showcase teens coming of age, but neither wallow in angst. They share similar animation styles (bright colors, very expressive character designs, visual gags, jumpy sequences, fanservice) and boast great soundtracks. Both have staff members from Revolutionary Girl Utena, if not the same ones. Both series can be confusing at times, but they're also very creative and rewarding. Penguindrum is a little more refined than FLCL, and FLCL is more experimental than Penguindrum. It's also much shorter with just six sweet episodes compared to Penguindrum's 24.

Although the story itself is not so similar with each other, but if you loved the prinnies in Disgaea, you'll love the penguins in Mawaru Penguindrum

Both have lots of imagery/symbolism. They also both have characters with lots of mental strife and confusion about what's going on in their lives and how to obtain happiness

Two highly detailed anime's in which unassuming youngsters uncover they are actually part of a massive conspiracy which unfolds as the series progresses. These anime's are very similar in content, yet being that both are mystery, it's difficult to put forward why they are alike without incorporating spoilers, so once you give this pair a change, this recommendation will make a lot more sence.

A girl who dies gets a second chance at life in some respect. In AnoHana, Menma reappears from the beginning of the series - several years after her death - as an older version of herself, only visible to her friend Jinta, and asks him to help grant her wish. In MP, Himari dies of a terminal condition, but has her life extended by a mysterious being, and several chubby penguins appear that are only visible to Himari and her brothers. The brothers have a special condition to fulfill as the price of having their sister's life extended.
report Recommended by Numi
Both are dark mysteries with confusing plot lines that consistently keep your interest. Top notch animation and character studies with deep story lines. Neither one is light but yet are able to throw in some delightful sarcastic humor. Both are definitely a must watch :)

I felt like the colors and art were similar. Also how they both include small bits of randomness that come together in the end. You need to watch the entire season from beginning to end for the stories to unfold. Chiaya, from Rolling Girls, made me think of Himari, from Mawaru Penguindrum - you do not need to be related by blood to be family. They are both about friendship and family with supernatural elements tossed in. Mawaru Penguindrum has a more serious feeling than Rolling Girls.

-Similar use of repetitive themes with a lot of meaning -Colorful, unique and well crafted story

Both of these Anime deal with sensitive relationship issues. They also have a mystery and supernatural element to them.

Both share a similar premise: a girl is on the verge of death, two boys try to help her. The three main characters in each show create a family of sorts. Supernatural elements and godly figures also play a role in both shows.

Both shows have similarities within their plots, as they start off with brothers going on an 'adventure' to obtain their goal, but as the story progresses, their adventure begins to tackle bigger issues within their society

Both contains morall choices, supported by friends but in the end the heroine fights on her own to save the world (Ringo in MP and Kuniko in S-L). Sad, but somehow filled with hope.

When I first watched Paranoia Agent, I thought I would never see anything like it again. Thankfully, I was wrong. Mawaru Penguindrum bears many similarities to Paranoia Agent. These include large amounts of humor in the beginning, extremely strange and convoluted plots, highly flawed but loveable characters, and surprisingly touching endings. Finally, both of these anime have very significant points to make regarding escapism for Paranoia Agent and fate for Mawaru Penguindrum.

Both are similar in such a way that they started out as a seemingly fun and quirky slice of life anime but quickly downsides into a very sad and emotional second half.

Both have Great art, fantasy, comedy and drama. Both involve gods, a possessed girl/woman, a present that is affected by events of the past in a place where everyone is connected somehow, incest, a "punishment"/curse, Love, random events and a hugely confusing plot.

Based in traveling different parts of Tokyo with Taxis in Odd Taxi and Trains in Penguindrum, there's an idol group, conspiracy plots, ensemble cast, dark comedy and characters that might be what one did not expect initially. Mystery develops in a similar way, they also turn gradually darker.

While most comparisons between Penguindrum and Monogatari are among Bakemonogatari, I feel like Nisemonogatari is even closer to Mawaru Penguindrum in that regard. The most obvious part being the focus on sibling relationships, weird fetishitic scenes and a liminal aesthetic. Both also some of the most WTF scenes of all anime.

Boogiepop And Other and Mawaru Penguin Drum have this dark, shrouded atmosphere that makes their worlds seem hopeless, unpredictable, and better off just letting the ''fate'' of their worlds take over. These shows have the power of taking people who seem so ordanairy and making their lifes a living hell, constantly fighting for what they want, even when they know that it may not come to light. The fate of the characters seems just about impossible to change... The fantasy aspect, which usually makes a lot of shows more bright and loving, can make the worst darkness come out. Both these anime are pretty similar in the way that they both deal with the philosophy of fate and magical things happening to change it. They're also both completely not what you would expect. Madoka Magica is about magical girls in frilly outfits with a cute little animal thing, Mawaru Penguindrum involves a anthro-ish penguin hat, a cute little sickly sister who loves her big brothers, and adorable quirky penguins. How is that similar at all? Because they both seem really lighthearted and happy and deal with normally cutesy premises, but are actually shockingly dark Story

These two shows are completely different, but at the same time have a lot of very similar vibes. The key theme in both is the reaction of different parts of society to a certain significant event (a terrorist attack in the subway and the arrival of aliens). In both shows, there is a lot of direct social criticism and in the form of metaphors too. And both have: - a lot of mystery - a lot of philosophy - unique art style - not cliched characters - a mix of everyday life and comedy with drama - wonderful music - complete finished story

Drama, romance, and two brothers might love their sister a bit too much...
report Recommended by Kiiroi
Both are stories that focus on unresolved trauma and how tragedies of the past influence the current generations. I like the fact that none of the characters in either are artificially made to make them likable (or unlikable) but rather that act like humans in front of adversity. Both are also stories of loss and the meaning of true love further than the romantic type of love. Finally, if you love unconventional animation, you'd love how both are directed.
report Recommended by eblf2013
Both are about a group of children and teens unveiling a terrorist conspiracy, main characters being shunned for their parent's fault (Takakura children in Penguindrum and Houjou children in Higurashi) and discussions whether a cruel and apparently unscapable fate can or cannot be changed.

If you enjoyed Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Parte 5: Vento Aureo, you should check out Mawaru Penguindrum, not the other way around. Both of these tackle the theme of fate, albeit in different ways. Both have found family elements; while in Vento Aureo it leans more into "Band of Brothers", both Mawaru Penguindrum and Vento Aureo give a very a similar feeling. Both have bittersweet endings.

These shows heavily involve a lot of the same concepts: fate, destruction, sacrifice, love and family. Both have elements of fantasy and there are quite a few character similarities. Their styles are completely different and I think one is a better show than the other, but of course that's subjective.

A lot of people take normal and peaceful life for granted. These titles shows the importance of embracing the miracle of life. They also address different family issues, love and friendship. More than that, the theme of taking opportunity is represented in this shows. And to conclude, both titles become dramatic and tragic approaching the final episodes.

The protagonists are looking for an object that no one is sure what is it exactly. Both anime are named after said object, the One Piece and the Penguindrum.

Both are about a terminally-ill sister that dies but then gets revived. Both explore the topic of siblinghood and both are highly surreal; focused on metaphors and viewer's interpretation.
report Recommended by eblf2013
Both apart from having the same director, there is a good number of intertextuality and references between these otherwise unrelated stories, like the painting scene getting used in both works. There's also a heavily unconventional storytelling.
report Recommended by eblf2013
Strong themes of fate and destiny. Characters constantly subjected to the unpredictability of their worlds. Certain characters are favored by fate, while others appear cursed. Penguindrum is more of a race against the clock to break the cycle of fate, while Haibane Renmei focuses on achieving a perfect destiny.

Both Kokoro Connect and Mawaru Penguindrum have these weird characters who get a personality change. In Kokoro Connect that mysterious character is Heartseed and in the other it's the personality that comes when the girl puts on the penguin hat. Also Taichi and the twins have the same type of feel to save/help people. And while watching Kokoro Connect I just kept thinking this reminds me of Mawaru Penguindrum.

Mawaru penguin's plot doesn't really revolve around Ringo's situation, but Ringo's story takes up a big chunk of mawaru penguin.

Sankarea reminds me a lot of Penguindrum. When watching the first few episodes I got that same wonderful feeling that I got when watching Penguindrum, that this anime was going to be great. The hilarious thing is that Sankarea and Penguindrum both have Ryohei Kimura in it. Both anime also have storylines about parents who were abusive and the background music is very similar too.
