Both have weird plots. Both are set in colorful surreal worlds but also in the real world. Both MC(s) are doing things to save a dying/dead loved one. Both shows have a central object that they use for symbolism that is mentioned in the title (penguin/egg). Both shows have slice of life moments but also intense/depressing moments.
Both have similar uses of symbolism and imagery that is not very clear at first.
Both of these series have connections to the magical girl genre with a twist of sci-fi and fantasy elements. Also, both feature interesting mysteries surrounding death, corruption, and illness. Finally, the designs are artists flair are so similar that they feel like they could have come from the same creator.
