Amen to that! A good twisting/turning plot is rare these days. Someone will take up the slack. There are good stories being produced today, but nothing like Kon-san's work. There are enough psychological mystery buffs out here to warrant someone taking up the challenge.
Don't get me wrong, Paranoia Agent was a very good series. I just didn't like it near as well as Perfect Blue and Millennium Actress. Both of those movies made my Movie Top 10. Paranoia Agent sure had me guessing when I first watched it, but it was not the same after that, even waiting 4 years to re-watch it. Still, it has it's own merit...not many series could touch it even today. I hope Kon-san's work inspired some young directors to get out of today's fan-service mode and put forth some top quality psychological mysteries. We sure need them!!!
Kon's work is all very good, but Perfect Blue is best followed by Millennium Actress. Tokyo Godfathers is a fine work as well. I was not quite as impressed by Paranoia Agent, but it was still well worth watching more than once. It really was a shame for him to die at such a young age...what great work was still in the wings...I wonder.
I really liked your review of Perfect Blue. I stumbled across this Gem right after moving to Florida in 2002. It was in the little town's only video store's VHS anime rack. I took it home and was "blown away" by it. I ordered a DVD copy. It has remained in my top 10 list ever since. This is as good as anything Hitchcock ever wrote. I also rated this a 10. Arigatou!
