Akatsuki no Yona

Two stories about young women taking the reigns of their destinies and forging their own paths. Amusingly both series characters are prophesied in one way or another to bring great upheaval to their respective countries. 
Both have strong brave women that were betrayed by their loved ones, both will go on a journey that will eventually have them meet up with the allies they need and both gain massive character development as the story goes one learning to be more compassionate and thoughtful. 
That said the heroines and the stories are polar opposites of each other. Song's heroine is a wise and cunning strategist as well as an adept swords-woman and the plot is grounded in reality with most of whats going on especially the battles being realistic and strategic. Yona is more of a charismatic "instinctual" commander who learns how to fight from scratch and the plot has some quite a number of fantastical elements to it and the battles can get quite one sided for that reason. read more

Both series are very similar in that they both focus on a princess, outcast from her home after the assassination of their families'. The differences mainly lie in that "Song of the Long March" is darker and more focused on revenge, and the cultural differences.

THIS IS WAY BETTER THEN YONA. The artwork is absolutely stunning and the characters are all so lovable. The plot is very interesting to follow and the main character is smart, beautiful, unique and brave.

2 Princesses must flee and hide after a coup. These maidens have strong character with some weaknesses and doubts sometimes.

It all takes place in historical settings : Old china for the Song of the long march and an imaginery old country for Akatsuki no yona (swords, spears and bows are the main weapons). Geopolitics is a critical issue for our two heroines, who deeply care about their country.

Another similarity is the beautiful art.

Differences :

you'll find no fantasy element in Song of the long march, the approach  is pretty realistic and related to China's history.

Princess Chang Ge Li (Song of the long march) is extremly clever, curious and educated in diverse matters like politics, war, diplomacy, philosophy, self-defense and even learns foreign languages while Yona only "learnt" to be a cute princess at the start of the story (but that changes afterwards).

The romance is a lot more prevalent in Akatsuki No Yona and in this manga there is a good portion of comedy, which works pretty well.

Both female leads are princesses that got chased out from the palace. But Unlike Yona, Li Chan Ge is intelligent, wise and way more competent in combat.

Both stories have strong female characters going through events that put them in a position to fight for their own destiny. The art of Xia Da in Song of the Long March is incredible, it is both delicate and fierce.The story is denser than Akatsuki no Yona, in both the narrative and the character development.

Honestly Song of the Long March is better, but since it's on hiatus it's very frustrating! I got so invested in the story and then was left hanging :( 

Both have strong female leads although Song of the Long March involves more emotional character growth since the princess is already very skilled. The male lead also has more initial standing in Song of the Long March.

There's less humour and competition for the main characters affection, but I really loved the development of the relationships. Definitely a must read, and I can't recommend it enough!

Song of The Long March, or Changge Xing in Chinese ( Chouka Kou in Japanese ) is a manhua that I started reading when I was ten. Though incomplete due to the author's contract termination with the editor, the story is definitely worth it.
It's the story of a coup d'état in ancient China that resulted in the death of the entire imperial family but the emperor's brother, man behind the coup d'état, and the princess Yongning, who managed to escape but is officially accounted for dead. Now living as a traveling merchant under the name of Li Changge, she seeks to exact revenge upon her uncle.
Changge is the strongest female MC I know. With a natural gift in martial arts, and the mind of a legendary strategist, she climbs up the ranks of society, occasionally falling and being called traitor, but not afraid to rise up again. It's an action shoujo, like Yona of the Dawn, though without the group of hot guys running after her -- on the contrary, they're looking for her head. More serious than Yona of the Dawn, too, and yet surprisingly similar. Please check this manhua out. read more

If you like Yona, you will absolutely love Basara. Basara is a bit more melodramatic than Akatsuki no Yona but it has that high fantasy traveling adventure theme with the main characters controlling the destiny of their respective kingdoms. Both have very strong female leads.

Both are excellent and are similar in terms of plot and character development. In my opinion Basara has a much more nuanced and complicated plot than ANY while ANY has more comic relief and better art. If you like one you will probably like the other although you will probably need to be in/will get into a very different mood to read each one.

Want a heroine that can kick butt? Then look no further! Both ANY and Basara feature a heroine who had her life turned upside down with the death of their loved ones and instead of giving up all hope both girls take up a sword and fight to regain their kingdom. These girls grow up from being weak to becoming a strong leader that people just want to follow.
Along their journeys of taking back their kingdoms both girls also seek out allies to help them fight and continue to grow stronger. Basara has an older art style but it really matches Akatsuki no Yona storyline and is absolutely perfect. read more

If you like how a naive, lonely woman tries to stand up on her own feet while trying to act brave and strong and keeps getting more courageous--you will like Basara. Both have female leads that were once flimsy but fate made them strong and their choices made them even better. Both leads take up adventure and make friends and allies along the way.

Akatsuki no Yona is a less intense version of Basara. Both follow similar themes of romance, royalty, strong female lead, adventure, overcoming adversity, personal growth, destiny, politics, etc... Basara explores these themes in a much more mature manner with greater depth of detail sometimes pushing the boundaries which may make some readers more uncomfortable. I personally love this series but I would not recommend it to high school readers. On the other hand, Akatsuki no yona is perfect for the young at heart. It takes a lighter, more playful approach to similar themes. 

Akatsuki no Yona has better art than Basara as well as this is newer. The downside of Akatsuki no Yona is that it's not yet complete which sometimes leads to painful times waiting for updates :P  read more

Akagami no Shirayuki-hime and Akatsuki no Yona chronicles the journey of a character a young girl as their life changes one day forever after one faithful event. Starting off as girl who lacks confidence, they develop throughout the series after facing off against their fears. The relationships they develop with other characters ranges from a variety of emotions including romance, friendship, and hatred. Both series takes place in a fantasy setting where there are unlimited possibilities.

Both mangas have a young, red-haired heroine who goes on a journey facing many obstacles along the way. Both main characters start off as someone who doesn't have the strength and confidence to do things on her own, but as she meets more people joining the group, her growth gradually develops with a lot of potentials based on what they go up against. Both feature a red-headed female protagonist who starts off physically weak and constantly in need of saving, but over time develop their already existing traits into strengths to protect themselves/people they care about. Akatsuki no Yona focuses more on Yona's development as a character, both physically and mentally, while Akagami no Shirayukihime has a bit more focus on the romance of the story. Both focus quite a bit on the running of kingdoms and fantasy-esque politics. They each have different approaches to a similar topic, and reading them alongside each other offers differing perspectives, which is kind of interesting.

Both involve a redhead princess born from dark haired royalty. She gets caught up in the middle of a political/royal war. Also both girls start as "weak" princess and later become strong and independent, becoming true leaders. Both cut their hair and they possess some sort of power in their eyes. They start travelling to know their country and meet several people. Even though the circumstances and the characters are different, in both the princess is in a sort of love triangle with her bodyguard and a prince.

Sora wa Akai Kawa no Hotori addpermalink

Red River is very similar to Yona as they're both fantasy stories about strong female leads doing their best for their respective kingdoms. Yona is a castaway princess trying to understand her place in the world after her father is dethroned and Yuri is a modern Japanese girl thrown into ancient Anatolia isekai style and falls in love with a prince there. Both are high fantasy traveling stories about royalty and the responsibility of those in power towards the common people. The main difference between the two I would say is the romance is more intense in Red River than it is in Yona. But the women in both stories really step up their game to become strong forces for good in the world. I cannot recommend both stories enough! read more

Fushigi Yuugi addpermalink

Both set in historical times, where the heroine traveled around to look for companions. However, the heroine was someone from modern world. She came from other world, and was named as a priestess that'd bring happiness to the country she descended on. And she began gathering her destined warriors but it wasn't  an easy feat. Like every other manga, a villain has to wreck everything. 

Unlike Akatsuki no Yona having a subtle romance getup, Fushigi yuugi romance line developed in a relatively fast pace. The manga was published in the 90s but it's definitely one of my favorite manga. It has anime too.

Just like Akatsuki no Yona, you may ignore this title due to the seemingly boring plot and the first chapter but do not be fooled!
It's awesome! Just wait and read for a while and I am sure you will be hooked on to it..unable to stop reading...

The plot is entirely different (Skip Beat revolves around the entertainment industry, mainly Acting field), but I'm sure those who loved Yona will also love the adorable, yet badass Kyoko from Skip Beat.

Yona lost everything she had when she had to flee from the castle after that terrible night when her first love and cousin Soo-won killed her father, the King.
Kyoko too, lost everything when she hears how her love Kyo thinks of her as nothing but a tool to use after spending and giving her whole 16 years for him.
But we have some tough girls here who are hard to crack. We see them change drastically from the weak and foolish characters they were to the most strong-willed and cool girls that they are now...
One of my favourite parts in both manga is when people wonder "Who is this girl?"   "Is she really the same person that I've seen/known before?"
They really make us think of the words.."DO not underestimate a girl" and "Dont judge a book by its cover"
There are also instances when we feel our hearts moved and find our eyes nearly filled with tears...or sometimes we find them to be the cutest and silliest characters in the world...and also the densest person in the matters of love!...  Though in Kyoko's case there is also the fact that she has come to hate and be scared of falling in love...

And let's not forget about the bishounen and cool male protagonist Tsuruga Ren. We see many sides of him throughout the manga and there is some character growth too along with many other characters after meeting Kyoko..and plus, he is cool and fun to watch.
Just as I mentioned, the majority of the characters undergo some development under the influence of Kyoko.
And overall...it's fun and an inspiring manga in my opinion which is a must-read read more

Both series depict a group of weird outlaws who travel the world and help people, liberating towns and nations by defeating corrupt elites and bloodthirsty leaders, which feels very satisfying. Both protagonists are very charismatic and likeable, they have the power to inspire people they meet and make powerful allies everywhere they go. There are also similarities between the characters, Yun/Nami, Hak/Zoro, Jaeha/Sanji... Both groups have somewhat similar family-like dynamics with plenty of fun interactions between the members, like Hak and Jaeha teasing each other the way Zoro and Sanji do.

Kusuriya no Hitorigoto addpermalink

Both are a Japanese "historical"-type setting and have capable likable heroines. One difference between the heroines is the fact that Yona started off weak and grew as a character while Maomao in Kusuriya no Hitorigoto was capable from the very beginning due to living in a harsher environment than Yona. Both are very enjoyable and refreshing stories.

Both of them have a very strong willed and capable girl as mc
In the beginning, both stories look like they are only about romance, but actually you have a protagonist (both Yona and Mishe) who are able to fight and help in political affairs.
Actually, as both stories progress, you realize that they deal a lot with political issues (as who is going to be the next king, how to deal with poor people and problems with crops, how to deal with neighbouring countries, and strategies). Also both protagonists study and take a hard time trying to improve their abilities so they can be worthy of what they want (in the case of Yona -> to be a righteous queen/ in the case of Mishe -> to be the legal wife of Prince Kallum and maybe one day queen....)

Ahh and both stories happen in ancient societies (Akatsuki no Yona >> something like ancient China/ Sabaku no Harem >> something as ancient Arabia) - they even include names as Anatolia (as a neighbour country - Turkey) read more

Joou no Hana addpermalink

A strong princess who is has an excellent character and a good heart  is forced to leave her kingdom.    Both of them are not fluff shoujo,  this is really good and I think male and female readers alike will like this action adventure story.      If you like Akatsuki no Yona try this one and you will NOT be disappointed!!   These princesses have to fight for their place in the world and have a lot of enemies among other royalty.

Nanatsu no Taizai addpermalink

For anyone interested in fantasy adventure, Akatsuki no Yona and Nanatsu no Taizai focus on this concept to the very core. Both series' main male protagonist travels with a female companion with a purpose. They become close throughout their journey as they discover wonders about their world. There are distinctive differences between the two series but both rely on purpose, a reason to fight for what they believe in. Clever flashbacks and dialogues are used to inform the readers of the setting, characters, and origins for both series. If you like an adventure of fantasy with rich details, I highly recommend giving both series a try.  read more

A small kingdom trying to stand up to its powerful neighbors; war and how it affects the life of ordinary people; a initially fragile young girl who has to face a task too big for her, and her journey of growth as she and her allies face trial after trial in order to save their homeland.

Akatsuki no Yona is more well-polished. Characters are lovable and the story has well-balanced dramatic and funny moments. It feels like the author knew from the start where Yona's path will take her.
Itsuwari no Freja has some interesting ideas and turnabouts, but the story gets inconsistent sometimes; some scenes are straight-up weird, albeit funny. It's still not clear if the author had a fixed outcome in mind, but so far it's been a pretty interesting manga to keep up with. read more

Taking place in a fantasy world, both series involves a young girl who is known as a princess throughout their community. The main female character gets involved with conflicts that catches them off guard. As their stories progresses on, they cope with the circumstance and adapt to become a person person for both themselves and for those around them. Both series has touches of romance, fantasy, and a bit of comedy. With a good mixture of dialogues and well-timed scenes, they successfully achieve their intent of entertainment. Recommending both series for fans who are fanatics of fantasy adventures.

When it comes to characteristics, Akatsuki no Yona and InuYasha are very much alike. Both have two strong female characters. Every time I lay my eyes on Yona, I can always see of her as Kagome. Maybe because they've become stronger from the first chapter down to the last. Both are also like historical animes. Both are in search of something; AnY is searching for the four dragons while InuYasha is in search of the remaining shikon jewels.  Inuyasha and Hak also share some similarities when it comes to their attitude. If you enjoyed reading Akatsuki no Yona then try InuYasha. Or the other way around. I promise these two mangas will not disappoint you. read more

Okobore Hime to Entaku no Kishi addpermalink

Both mangas have strong female leads that are of noble birth who need to find people with certain abilities to help them accomplish their goal. However, Okobore leans more heavily toward the political side of things while Akatsuki no Yona is more adventure/action. Both have gorgeous art styles and are great reads.

Same author, but NG Life is a bit more on the comedy/romance side (with a few serious parts) while Yona is more serious with a little comedy/romance thrown in occasionally. 

I really like how Kusanagi-san writes her characters, that's what drew me to both series.

Zettai Heiwa Daisakusen addpermalink

It is set against a background of political war and intrigue, and has royalty and nobles as the main characters.   In both we have a lot of political unrest and assassination attempts going on and both have a strong story and plot.   
In Zettai we have romance and I am hoping this to be the case for Akatsuki no Yona as well.   Both have young women who are set against trying circumstances and both girls are not in love with the male characters to begin with and the guys have to try to win their hearts or they realize the worth of the guy and that they care for him  through the way he handles the things that have to go through.     
Akatsuki no Yona has a fantasy medieval setting while Zettai Heiwa Daisakusen has a more modern middle eastern type setting for it's fantasy.     
They are both great and I think readers of one will also enjoy the other. read more

Similar Storylines. The Main Heroine is also a Princess forced to leave the Palace and on the Run with two Men. Also Romantically its going in a same Direction as Akatsuki no Yona with her being interested in one of the Men at first. Although its a Korean Manwha it is drawn very realistic and Manga like (not Colored). It is also more Dramatic, with themes of Rape, Murder Suicide etc. more openly shown. And i think theres is not really any Magical, Supernatural Elements to the Story. Overall the Story is really similar and yet different. I do REALLY recommend this Manwha and think its kinda underrated.  read more

Maybe some romance in both? one more than the other.

Both are historical mangas with fantasy elements, amazing characters and gorgeous art style. Even with different historical sets and eras, the main characters will get a sword to protect the ones they love and their country with (Yona) or against (Donten)  magical creatures after have lost someone important.

Ou no Kemono reminds me a lot of Yona, mainly because both series feature female leads and heavy doses of political/court intrigue. In addition, I think that both series have good worldbuilding and really interesting characters, and generally similar vibes.

In both main characters are in groups.
They are trying to change things they do not like.
In Akatsuki no Yona there is a romantic love story too and in Karneval, there is more of a family-like love.
The chemistry between characters in both stories is amazing.
All in all I think you will enjoy both series.

Both stories are historical fantasy shoujo featuring princesses, kind parents, dragons and love triangles. The heroines are quite a bit different. Akagami's heroine starts out as a helpless princess, while Ryuu's has always been fiery. Both stories include the betrayal of a romantic interest, as well.

A main protagonist female who is swarmed by a flock of hot male characters both good and bad.

Your Throne doesn't have some of the lighter and more fun moments that Yona of the Dawn has, but they both deal with heavy politics, and have tons of attractive characters.

Both are about originally naïve princesses who are forced to see life outside their small world, in Akatsuki no Yona by being driven out, in Aoki Umi it’s through being kidnapped. Both contain pirates, fantasy supernatural elements, romance and some bisshies. ANY is more adventure with a splash of romance, AUTH is more romance based and shorter. (If you love Hak, you will probably love Raju).

And both have great art, great humor, and great action set pieces.  Also to mention a lot of the main antagonists in both series are pretty well fleshed characters and have their own struggles outside of fighting the protagonists!

If you like Su-won and wish he were the main character of Akatsuki no Yona OR you want to read a story where the main character(s) overthrow a worthless ruler, consider reading King's Maker. In both stories, the nation suffers from the inactivity/carelessness of their respective ruler. If a rebellion does not happen, the people will continue to live with injustice and poverty.

Both stories incorporate magic/fantasy, but it's done differently. Unlike Akatsuki no Yona where the titular character is a reincarnation of the first red dragon and automatically gains the love of the other dragons, we have Wolfgang in King's Maker who lives with the Golden Blessing. But people respect and follow Wolfgang for who he is as a person and his capabilities as a ruler. Like Su-won, Wolfgang grew up learning politics and honed his fighting skills, as well as waited for the right moment to overthrow the king. We could argue that Yona and Wolfgang resemble each other at being born with unique hair and eye colour and having special abilities. But the Golden Blessing does not make people automatically submit to Wolfgang, like how Yona met people who worshipped her because of her hair colour or got intimidated by Yona when she glared at them.

King's Maker also has Shin Soohyuk who guided Wolfgang throughout the years. So, Wolfgang does not miraculously learn and become the ruler his country needs in an instant. We witness the characters grow and learn, as well as see Wolfgang and Soohyuk develop together. Akatsuki no Yona gives a lonely vibe to Su-won as his friends (Yona and Hak) didn't know about his ambitions for the country and plan to rule, so that's one reason why they didn't stay with him. 

King's Maker has a level-headed perspective on what kind of ruler their country needs. In Akatsuki no Yona, Su-won became the ruler the country needed. The difference is that Wolfgang gets acknowledged through his efforts and rapport-building skills. Su-won gained the trust of some people, but not everyone (e.g. some people associate him with his late father named Yu-Hon, Yona and Hak were heartbroken about the way he ascended the throne...). I could tell you, in King's Maker, no one grieved over that heinous king. Akatsuki no Yona has readers on different sides, as some can't forgive Su-won, while others approve of him being the ruler and doubt Yona could ever rule because she was never trained in diplomacy, economics, military strategies, governance, and so on. Yona grew up as the loved and carefree princess, while Wolfgang was a prince in blood and name but not treated affectionately by his father. Readers of Akatsuki no Yona question the purpose of Yona and her crew wandering the country, doing acts of service without Su-won's corporation (not thinking of long-term goals). Meanwhile, there is a clear goal in King's Maker and the characters work together.

King's Maker has you understand why rebellion is essential and no one would argue otherwise, while Akatsuki no Yona can give you mixed feelings because the titular character's father was caring towards her despite being a passive ruler. I especially highlight King's Maker for people who want to see or feel what it's like to be in Su-won's shoes, where you dedicate your life to a task for the sake of your country. But a note in advance that the ruler in King's Maker commits the unspeakable, while Yona's father King Il (the one Su-won overthrew) was inadequate so he failed to protect his people. read more

But this has a twist where Dan-bi has an eye-transplant and has to act like a good girl  as she live with her aunt and her aunt's boy-crazy son and daughter.

-same love triangle dynamics (you'll see when you read them)
-main character aims to round up a motley crew 
-lots of internal conflicts
-good dose of comedy

However SSG:MDK is set in a more modern setting with many of the characters believing they have past lives involving the Shinsengumi (Swordsmen). While AKNY is set more in the historical past with empires/princesses etc.

It's by the same author so while reading Kuroorihime I couldn't stop relating the main characters with Akatsuki. (especially Setia with Yona....Azurite and Hak not so much but I think if Hak does not hold back his feelings...and become evil...he'll be like Azurite lol) Storyline is not similar but both heroine are strong willed. If you like one, you'll most likely like the other :)

Sakura and Yona are both princesses of a country and ends up going on an adventure with their childhood friend/love interest. Syaoran and Hak are both strong characters and protective over their princess and whilst they both have feelings for their princess, it's more or less one sided :(

Storylines are not that similar but they're both adventure genre - but just beware the plot in tsubasa does get very convoluted till the end. Major difference is that AnY is shoujo and Tsubasa is shounen but to be honest, I think both have around the same amount of action to drama to romantic scenes

Although they adapt different premises, both series are firm examples that characterizes the life of a girl whose life changes forever after a certain faithful event. There are a distinct amount of relationship dynamics that become a central focus in both series. At the same time, we learn more about the events of the past that influences events of the future through important development. Do take note that Otoyomegatari is more noticeable for its mature elements while Akatsuki no Yona is crafted by timeless fantasy.

From very sheltered princesses, later on they become stronger and trying to do what's best for the country which both happened to be named Kouka. The fantasy part also have similarities; however, it may contain spoiler if I post that.

These anime's similarities lies in the main female characters and the world of the anime. 
Both the female leads have red hair and are very strong and kind, but still reliant characters. 
The settings are both in (kind of) fantasy worlds, though Magus's Bride is supposed to be our world, mostly England and Iceland, with magic and Yona is just old Asia with magic. They both give us a realistic, but still magical world.

Akatsuki no Yona (AnY) and Strange Dragon are very similar to one another. Both main characters are princesses that left their palace in search of dragons to reclaim their throne. The differences lies in the way they left their home and the fact that in AnY there are 4 dragons and princess Yona has to travel to find these dragon descendants and convince them to join her. In Strange Dragon, the princess finds her dragon in the first chapter. Another difference is that when the princesses left, in AnY, she had someone accompany her, whereas in Strange Dragon, the princess was completely on her own. For now that is all I can say as there is only 1 chapter out for Strange Dragon. But the feel that both of these give are very similar. I'm sure that if you enjoy one, you'll enjoy the other! read more

Both series' main protagonist gets themselves involved in complicated affairs revolves with royalty and betrayal. In addition, we witness their development as they try to overcome obstacles in the course of the story. Both series also are known for a lot of relationship building with engaging developments. There is an insightful amount of background story that are fleshed out for our characters as we see their past lives and how they influence the present and future.

Both Yona of the Dawn and Boukoku no Marguerite are stories about deposed princesses. Yona is old enough that when her father loses the throne, she journeys with her trusted knight and finds the legendary dragons. Boukoku no Marguerite is not a mythical story. Marguerite is a child when her country is taken over and while running away with her nanny she is rescued by a retired knight who raises her as his son until she’s too old to conceal anymore. You watch her as she goes back to being a woman and learns what happened to her country.

You wonder why I'd reccomend two shoujo that are nothing alike. Akatsuki no Yona is based in a fictional ancient country and it goes around politics while Immortal Rain is based in a fictional world on the present day/future being also sci-fi. So why do I reccomend one to the fans of other? Its very simple: 
- You enjoy a group of friends tagging along helping the heroine and the hero?
- You love the theme best friends turn into enemies?
- Love triangle and lots and lots of angst?
- Comedy moments that are very kawaii?
Then you have it. In both you have characters suffering with their immortality, and a heroine who is kind and is a badass and two childhood friends who used to be like brothers until one betrays the other leading you to a pool of tears and feels everywhere because you know you should hate the anti-hero aka villain but you actually realize you can´t, even after all the wrong he's done. 
You won´t regret to read these manga and if you don´t believe me I guess the rating says everything, both being higher than 8! Good plots, awesome angst, nakama feels...what are you waiting for? Read them!:D read more

These fantasy stories have mythical dragons coming to aide a fighter, swordsmen and battles.   In each there is a vow from the past of a dragon coming to the aide of the nobles.     The art in each story is good and sets the tone of the mythical fantasies well.   They both have handsome heroes.   A difference is that Yasashii Ryuu is a shounen-ai - while Akatsuki no Yona is a shoujo but I think that both  are a treat to fans of fantasy art.

Saver and Akatsuki no Yona are stories set in fantasy realms with a strong female lead.    The girls have tragedies happen which they have to overcome and they have hard choices to make in their worlds and experience betrayals.    The worlds feature magic and swordfighting and strong plots and action along with  reverse harems  with several guys to like.  The tone in Saver has less comedy than Akatsuki no Yona does.   Saver does have her travel from the modern age to the fantasy world while Yona's story is completely in the fantasy realm.  Both deserve high ratings.   read more

Both heroines must struggle to fight and they gather companions who would never betray them. If you enjoyed reading Akatsuki no Yona then Kanata Kara is the manga for you.

 Both heroines have considerable character development after they deal with the different situations life throws at them: Yona goes from being a rich crybaby to being the most badass heroine ever while Usagi goes from being clumsy and ignorant to being really cool. (personally I prefer akatsuki no yona because of the darker setting and lovable side characters, but if you like akatsuki no yona you might enjoy tsuki no shippo too :)

- This one is a lot lighter in tone compared to Berserk. 

- They're both based on medieval fantasy worlds, where Akatsuki no Yona is more focused on Eastern Asia.

- There are people with god like powers and abilities

- Su-won betrays Hak and Yona like Griffith betrays Guts and Casca by killing people precious to them in order for him to become king

- The battle scenes are very well done and even though it's a shojo, it isn't afraid to be dark and bloody

Ryuuou no Kagehime addpermalink

Ryuuou no Kagehime has the same historical fantasy feel as Akatsuki no Yona. The shoujo art styles are somewhat similar and both are published by Hanatoyume Comics. Both have strong female leads who fight, although the stories are mainly led through character relations than action. Both stories also involve dragons and dragon magic.
If you get the chance, please be sure to read Ryuuou no Kagehime when it gets translated!
