Either Basilisk was influenced by Ninja Scroll or the had the same source material, because a few of the techniques can be found in both, as well as some names. Of course that means whichever one you see second will seem unoriginal, so space it out. They're both very good.

Tons of blood, gore, and nudity. A lot of the villains in both share the same powers, and the art styles are very similar, which makes sense given the director.

Similar overall feel, being both movies about samurai (or ronin, in the case of Sword of the Stranger) on a mission, along the way facing off against a near invincible foe. Sword of the Stranger is grounded in a more gritty realism, but the action and characters aren't as jaw-droppingly cool as in Ninja Scroll.

another great ninja/samurai full of action anime

These "adult only" anime are indeed similar in how they mix strong elements such as violence, gore, sword fights, and sadistic villains with romance, sex, and drama. In both anime the main characters are a fearsome swordsman and a strong-tempered female fighter, which is one of the reasons why the relationship between Jubei & Kagero instantly reminded me of Gatsu & Caska. Needless to say, both are great to watch for fans of the genre.

Engaging historical stories of ninja and samurai with a very similar storyline and plenty of action, violence, and gore. In both the protagonist is an homicidal ronin sword master who develops a romantic relationship with a beautiful woman encountered during his journey. Both anime are extremely nice to watch and have the same tragic ending.

100% better version. Better in every aspect.

Both of these anime show brutal deaths and unnaturally skilled samurai.....

After schoolboys and girls samurais and ninjas are the most common characters in anime. Their life sometimes became really hard. They have to chase different type of strange creatures and of course kill them in a very strange way. Both these films tell us about a drab existence of doughty Japanese warriors. Destroying everything on their way they find by the way their true love and reason for being. Put it in a nutshell there are two equal stories about main hero defeating everybody clamoured against them. You also could enjoy love stories in Yoma and Ninja Scroll resembled me Kenshin OVA. There are no any  read more

bloody no holds barred action about a lone samurai/ninja and a female protagonist

Just like the Kenshin prequel, both are recommended because of the swordplay, romantic drama, and dark theme.

Both were directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri, animated by Madhouse Studios, and come from the early 90's. Both are ultraviolent, have great action scenes, and interesting characters. They both may not be THAT much alike, but I do think they would apeal to the same type of people.

ninja's and swordsmen with different unworldly skills. male+female lead companion.

Both are ninja anime from the 1990's that are set in feudal Japan. Both are action-packed anime with lots of violence and blood. Ninja Scroll has a better story, however they are both very entertaining to watch. If you enjoyed one, you will enjoy the other.

Both anime series are about samurais. I recommend Juubee Ninpuuchou Movie just because the series really sucks comparing to the original movie.

Samurai Japan dark fantasy about ninjas with supernatural powers fighting against demons and evil magic conspiracy. Bloody and naturalistic fights.

Ninja Scroll and Dororo are very similar. They both take place in the Samurai Era and feature demons and feature a protagonist who spends much of his time killing demons. If you like one, you will very likely like the other.

Although they are set in different times, both anime focus on a badass main character, who must fight a lot of enemies, each with distinct and unique abilities, as he travels around to complete his quest. Both anime have a lot of action and violence, and an interesting cast of characters. Overall, they have a similar vibe and are meant for a similar audience.

Both have supernatural action along with sword swinging and strong female character. But ninja scroll does everything right with the anime, which the weathering continent did wrong.

The Lupin III special is a gritty action movie with similar art style, great fight choreography, use of poisoning as a plot device which lends itself to the tragedy of characters' backstories to flesh them out and humanize their emotional struggle (and even a symbolic final fight along gold). It's set in modern times, but its feel is extremely similar to Ninja Scroll

Both have good ol' 90s animation and great action

This action-packed anime features a similar blend of violence, gore, and mysticism as "Akira." It follows a wandering swordsman named Jubei who becomes embroiled in a plot involving a powerful ninja clan.

Bloody macho samurai fighting, some paranormal. "Samurai Honor" warrior MC.
report Recommended by karlito77
Both movies share many plot elements: alternate history feudal Japan, samurai and ninja in regular and demonic variants, mechanical monstrosities, damsel-hime in distress, demon generals and a GAR hero saving the day. Both offer honest, unironical nudity & samurai violence with ero-guro style demon opponents. Ninja scroll has far higher production values, some comedy and a better story. Karasu Tengu has a full 3 cours series (I haven't seen).

Musical magical ninja stuff with a very physically similar character design of the protagonist. Mild lewdness and gore abot the same level. Got that related 80's-90's aesthetic going too.

Both are made by Madhouse Studios and directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri. They are both deal with stories of revenge and are very action pack. Both movies have tons of sword fights, blood and gore. Highlander: The Search for Vengeance feels like a true sequel to the first Highlander film and feels like a modern anime made for old school anime fans. If you enjoyed one, you will enjoy the other.

Feudal Japan is a popular setting in anime because it offers so much material to explore. What Onimusha and Ninja Scroll contributes to this category is their supernatural elements, specifically demons and inhuman powers. This sets the ground for extreme graphic violence as swordsmen fight demons. Anyone looking for more anime set in a supernatural feudal Japan will be glad to find this one.

Kage Shadow is very similar since it shares the themes of ninjas, betrayal, revenge and ships.

In the 1980s and early 1990s, there was a wave of anime titles with extreme violence and sexual content. Ninja Scroll is the most well known title of this trend. Bastard‼ Heavy Metal, Dark Fantasy is a remake of a title from this period. While many people continue to watch Ninja Scroll for its classic status, Bastard‼ and Ninja Scroll appeal to a very specific audience. If you count yourself as part of that audience then you should definitely watch this anime.

Hell's Paradise is one of the standout series from Spring 2023. It was especially beloved for its non-stop action and graphic violence. Like Ninja Scroll, Hell's Paradise is set in Edo-period Japan and has ninjas, swordsmen, and supernatural creatures killing each other. Their storylines simply provide a reason for characters to fight, which is what you want in these types of anime.

Both anime's feature fluid action with copious amounts of blood. Kurozuka feels like Ninja scroll with vampires.
report Recommended by funkpanda
It have a little touch of the gore and its also a kind of feudal times in Japan. Kind of the samurai type that just likes to kill

Ninja Scroll is Karakuri no Kimi taken to the next level; lots more action and weird ninja abilities, and definitely more blood and gore. While things in Puppet Princess tend to look like porcupines - sharp extrusions everywhere, you know what I mean - they don't in Ninja Scroll, they do share the garish colors though, which is not a bad thing if you're wondering.
report Recommended by alcurad
Both feature ninjas battling each other in Edo period Japan while searching for an elusive treasure. Ninja Scroll definitely took some inspiration from The Dagger of Kamui.

Looking for something graphic that will make you say "That was f**ked up" when you're finished watching it? Give one of these a shot.
report Recommended by RoarkTenjouin
Both are very violent with heavy emphasis on action (but with swords instead of fists). Kenshiro (Fist of the North Star's lead) and Jubei (Ninja Scroll's lead) are both very similar in their battles and exploits (Jubei is perhaps a little less scrupulous and more antiheroic than Kenshiro though). Both also feature female romantic interests in the form of Yuria (Fist) and Kagero (Scroll).

Has very similar art style, similar story and just the overall atmosphere reminded me of Ninja Scroll.

Read or Die is not as violent or as sexual as Ninja Scroll, but both are fast paced, stylish action stories. Both have well-designed characters with unconventional, imaginative powers.

Both anime have very similar, distinctive styles. Even though they are set in different times and worlds (medieval Europe vs Edo Japan), both have many similar themes. They focus on a badass main character, as he fights hordes of enemies, both human and inhuman using his swordsmanship skills. Both anime contain a lot of violence, gore, sex and depravity, creating a very similar atmosphere.
