Tenkuu no Shiro Laputa

Makoto Shinkai has obviously been inspired by Hayao Miyazaki's Laputa: Castle In the Sky. Which Shinkai also has stated he is a huuge fan of! Both involve the protagonists searching for some other magical place in the world, both have these magical stone necklaces, and not to mention both have protagonists who meet a mysterious person that sets them off on their adventure.  

Hayao Miyazaki has a very poetic way of telling stories. In both of these movies you see his fascination for flying machines. 

Another classic by miyazaki, the whole scheme is kinda like Laputa. And there is also this good vs evil thing in this one too. And lots of "teachings" like all miyazakis films have. Alltogether solid, pleasant and also thinking inducing anime. A must see for all Miyazaki fans! 

Very similar setting, similar main characters (a girl, who can control a mighty power and a boy, who wants to protect her), some points in the plot are also very similar. Both are masterpieces and are definitely worth watching. 

Anno of Evangelion fame hit the big time in animation by quite literally knocking on Miyazaki's door and showing him his animation skills when Nausicaa's production ran out of animators. Afterwards, Anno was inspired by Miyazaki's concept for Laputa and ended up directing his own version of the story with his own studio. This is how Nadia came to be. If Miyazaki has one weakness visible throughout his films, it's characterisation. More often than not, his imagination for story-telling leaves little room for the nitty-gritty of making his characters into relatable humans, as opposed to plot devices. Anno, on the other hand, is most famous for the creation of Evangelion; arguably THE psychological anime. Evangelion was a series that focused almost exclusively on the exploration of its cast; story details being viewed as less important and, ultimately, making the conclusion near enough incomprehensible. And it's this plot/characterisation divide that defines two anime that begin with the same premise. In Laputa, the hero and heroine might as well have been nameless. They had their roles and there had to be a hint of romance. There was NOTHING else. Their dull designs went along with how hollow they came across. Part of the blame for this failing lies with a restrictive film time limit and the film targeting younger viewers, but it's still hard to imagine if, say, Anno had directed Laputa that the end result would've been the same, for better or worse. Nadia's different, of course. Rather than a happy-happy Ghibli heroine, Nadia's titular heroine is best described as bitchy--a tsundere before Asuka made tsunderes so popular in - OF COURSE - Evangelion. She gives her eccentric and nerdy romantic counterpart a hard time throughout the series as their relationship gradually evolved; even chastising him for killing for food and refusing to eat meat, among other things. Others may see Nadia's personality and find such a heroine distasteful when a Mary Sue type could've took her place. I, however, see human imperfections in a character and see a person, rather than a drawing. I see two people overcoming their differences through disagreements and see growth. In summary: Laputa's the title for those looking for an adventure filled with magic. Nadia is also a lot of fun but contains more of the genuine human qualities that I love to see. read more 

Both by Hayao Miyazaki, but these two have keepers of peace that fight against darkness. Just beautiful... 

Another Ghibli movie, this one holds the same charms. When I watched Castle of Cagliostro I couldn't help but think of moments in Laputa; they felt fairly linked in parts. If you enjoyed this one, watch Laputa, without a doubt!

They're both directed by Miyazaki and created at Studio Ghibli. They're both adventure films that have air pirates. Also, the two main characters in both are an engineer and a mysterious character somehow affected by magic. 

Similar feel, art, music and setting. However, Laputa is far superior in every way and if you enjoyed Fractale, you'll be blown away by Laputa. 

Both follow a very fundamental story trope. Protagonist has a trinket that the antagonist want so that they can rule the world. Otherwise, the stories are pretty different and the dynamics between the characters make for different character arcs. Steamboy is very accessible to non-anime viewers so it's a great introduction movie.  

Similar main characters and forced separation because of a higher conspiracy. 

Young main characters involved in a world of magic with great buildings, weird spells and really bad guys... and both from Ghibli. 

This is also an action-adventure tale, but it is a much tighter plotted and more memorable production overall. Both are nonetheless beautifully animated and gorgeously scored, and have excellent dubbing overall. 

I am surprisingly shocked that no one has made a reccomended Castle in the Sky for Elemental Gelade. Princess Sheeta = Ren, Pazu = Cou. Ren is an Edel Raid and direct descendant of the Metherlence bloodline while Sheeta is of a Laputan Royal line. Pazu joins Dola's sky pirates while Cou IS a sky pirate. In any case if you like one then you will most definitely will like the other 

The protagonists are two kids. In both the movies one of the kids holds secret to WMD and raging nations are desperate to find the weapon. 

Both are set in beautifully rendered alternative worlds and focus on a strong bond between a young woman and a young man who are connected through friendship and a bit of magic to change the future of their world. 

Despite the plot being quite different, the Secret of Cerulean Sand definitely has the same feel as Laputa: Castle in the Sky. Jane's adventure reminded me of Pazu's and Sheeta's in a lot of ways: in search for the truth, making new acquaintances and friends, using their skills in regards to flying machines, facing the harsh realities of life and discovering oneself in this life changing epic journey. The theme of new technology and its uses was also a link: the tool is not evil but the people that use them with bad intentions are. Of course being a series, The Secret of Cerulean Sand has fleshed out characters but Laputa can still hold its own as a masterpiece of cinema. If you like this series, I recommend you watch Laputa and visa versa. read more 

Ok, there is almost nothing similar between Naruto and Laputa. But the thing is, that while watching this Naruto movie and seeing the scenes from the castel floating, the only thing i could think about was on one of my favorite films: Laputa. Explosions, everything apart, something floating in the sky. If these elements are some of the reasons for you to like Laputa, then it might be nice to watch Naruto as well, despite the significal diferences in the main plot. 

Both are children's adventure films about finding a lost civilization. In both, mystical powers and lost knowledge are key in protecting both Laputa and the Temple of the Sea from an invader who wants power and wealth. Both have similar imagery. 

Both are sci-fi and romance. Contains atmosphere of beauty and both have theme plot in the sky . Both have high-flying adventure. In both Main male character is an engineer. In both anime they vow to unravel the mystery. In Tenkuu no Shiro Laputa it is of the luminous crystal around Sheeta's neck and in Kumo no Mukou, Yakusoku it is about the tower. There quest won't be easy. 

Both movies embrace the art of flight, and have a very special magic-feeling to them. They are also both must see's of their time. Also, Hayao Miyazaki. 

Both stories feature a romance between a heroic and selfless boy and a kind and feminine girl, a floating continent with fantasy elements for a setting, battles and conflicts with powerful enemies, and major villains who seek control over cities by unethical means.  

• In both the romantic anime a mysterious girl who is running for her life is being saved by a boy. • The MCs in both the anime have similar dynamic.  

Both feature an island which had been ruling the world with its extraordinary powers and its war titans for centuries until it found itself in inner conflicts which spared the world from its dominance. The main heroine is a girl who is, unknowingly, a descendant of the island's royal family (a family that was split after the fall of the island) who grew up on a farm as a little girl. Together with the help of the male protagonist, she now has to decide over the future of the island's powers. Not to mention, the start of the Ending song "Akatsuki no Requiem" literally sounds like a Ghibli soundtrack, namely "A Town With An Ocean View".  read more 

Kuutei Dragons clearly draws elements from Ghibli movies, particularly Laputa with its sky crews, pirates, sky explorations, and fantastic airships braving the storm. 

Radiant seems to be inspired by Castle in the Sky if you liked one you should most definitely watch another. -in both animes there is castle in sky -action for large part takes place in clouds, winds pose a danger -main characters are being chased or are jeopardised by some military type guys -there are one of a kind flying ships -two young protagonists one male and one female  

Both anime have a young girl being chased by a crazy dude and a military for their magical necklace but end up meeting a young, postive and head high boy who tries to protect them. 

The entire Lupin franchise if perfect for those who enjoyed the adventure element of castle in the sky, i just believe this film is the best it has to offer and is in my opinion the best gateway into the franchise  

These two have the same, non stop action filled adventures, which can get kind of hectic at times. In Birthday Wonderland there is a 'tin man doll' that reminds me of the giant robot in Laputa... These both have very interesting world designs and for some reason made me think of one another.  

This show definitely gives me a Miyazaki vibe with the world/scenery and unique creatures that inhabit it. There is also a cool guardian who keeps the forest/lifeforms safe. 

Princess Mononoke is another Studio Ghibli film that focuses on people and their impact on nature. Both feature independent young women who are goal driven and stick to their beliefs. Princess Mononoke is a bit more graphic compared to Laputa, but the deep meaning behind both are very similar. 

it's obvious that this movie has taken a ton of inspiration from castle in the sky. is it as good as it? no, not by a long shot, but it's a still fun watch that doesn't involve much thinking. and to it's credit, it does have a good few original ideas.  

The animation style is lowkey similar. The concepts of human selfishness, governments monopolizing supernatural powers for personal gain (and it getting out of control), and overall destruction are present in both. They have quite cathartic endings.  

Both very uplifting films with beautiful animation and a wonderful story. 

Giant Beasts of Ars and Castle in the Sky are adventure titles that are centered on a damsel in distress and their protector. Sheeta (Castle in the Sky) and Kuumi (Giant Beasts of Ars) are young girls who are pursued by corrupt military agents to gain power. Both anime develop this storyline to their expected conclusions. Giant Beasts of Ars unfortunately has story structure issues that brings down its enjoyment, but might still appeal to an audience that wants a female-centric adventure series. Castle in the Sky is a very good adventure movie that knows how to make the best of a simple storyline. 

Balthus is basically just a pervy cash-in on Laputa borrowing many design elements and themes. It's not even hardcore, as there are no explicit genitalia shots. 

While much of the story and setting differ, I found the "innocent" feel of the adventure of Jinto and Lafia to be very similar to the adventure found in Castle in the Sky. 

Kaina of the Great Snow Sea and Castle in the Sky have similar storylines involving a damsel in distress who encounters their capable romantic interest while being pursued by the antagonists. Sheeta (Castle in the Sky) gradually finds her inner strength and becomes a strong female character. Liliha (Kaina of the Great Snow Sea) always had inner strength and courage to pursue her conviction despite her moment of helplessness through the series. Castle in the Sky is a very good, family-friendly adventure anime with good rewatchability. Kaina of the Great Snow Sea has interesting worldbuilding, but the script could be better. If you're looking for a classic adventure anime then you might want to watch this one.  read more 

Castle in the Sky and Fena: Pirate Princess are adventure anime that follow similar story beats. Sheeta and Fena are damsel in distress who are rescued by their capable romantic interest because they are being pursued by shady government agents. Sheeta and Fena are connected to fabled location that everyone wants to reach. Sheeta is a better than character than Fena because she finds her courage stops being a damsel through her adventure. Fena: Pirate Princess also has script issues, which may disappoint people. 

Are you looking for a very good adventure? Castle in the Sky and The Mysterious Cities of Gold feature children who are pursued by government agents as they seek to discover the remnants from a lost civilization. Despite their age, the main characters are resourceful, tenacious, and courageous. The Mysterious Cities of Gold was my favourite childhood anime. Castle in the Sky is a childhood movie for many others. Nothing beats a good nostalgic title that retains its quality when you're older.  

Mary and the Witch's Flower shares many similar elements as Castle in the Sky. It has beautiful animation and character designs due to the involvement of Studio Ghibli veterans. It is a family-friendly adventure movie centered on a conflict over an item that can cause great harm in the wrong hands. Its storyline emphasizes character growth over character development. Mary and the Witch's Flower is sure to become a classic movie like Castle in the Sky. 

What makes a good adventure is the journey and its stakes. Castle in the Sky is an all-age movie, but its in-world stakes and dangers are real for Sheeta and Pazu. Their journey is part flight, part pursuit, and part quest. Made in Abyss will subvert your expectations based on the character design by quickly establishing and reinforcing the in-world stakes and dangers for Riko and Reg. Their journey is a personal quest and hints at secrets to be uncovered at the end. Pazu and Reg are dependable, but not infallible, protectors. Sheeta and Riko are damsels in distress, but still offer usefulness in the journey. Made in Abyss and Castle in the Sky are highly regarded adventure anime titles that will please everyone except contrarians. read more 

Both are whimsical fantasy romances with two young protagonists. The art style is also very similar in its simplicity. 

Both display several similarities: - Similar landscapes and setting. - Pirates and slice of life. - Similar Air engines that humans use to fly. - A protagonist coming from the "sky". While Laputa focus on romance, SnG focus on friendship, and the latter has Sci-fi with Space/aliens theme while Laputa remains on Fantasy genre. Personally, I found Gargantia´s characters more enjoyable, still, both are great to watch, so if you liked one, you may like the other.  

They are both stories with an idealistic and capable male lead (Pazu/Ran) that comes to the aid of a mysterious female lead (Sheeta/Aira) that is connected with otherworldly powers or entities. Laputa and The Holy Green are both unknown and forbidden landmarks that offer entryway into an unknown power that has the power to destroy humanity (or most of it). There are rival factions that oppose one another as well (Colonel Muska/Rodoists vs. Dola Gang/The Hazard) and the two leads end up involved as well.  

The style of Ryuu no Haisha certainly reminds one the old Ghibli movies. It's based on some old Asian legends and myths but somehow modified to the nowadays or recent world and society. While in Laputa we have the flying castle, in Ryuu no Haisha we have the dragon large as a castle. There are people involved seeking it's power for their own purposes and there are also people trying to protect it. 

Young boy accidentally gets mixed up with strange young girl, they end up over their heads involved in troubles and visiting castles in the sky. 

Both are made by Studio Ghibli, and both have girls that come from different worlds than the protagonist. 

In both you have kids (or at least young adults) who embark on a journey to find something that doesn't have to fall in the wrong hands. The kids/young adults are chased by a shady organization and a bunch of carefree sky pirates, and are descendants of important people. 

Many of the themes are similar: an unknown girl appearing out of nowhere, a pendant that holds magical powers, a crumbled Utopia, a lot of flying, a little bit of romance, and a great score to go with it all. 

Both are very kawaii and directed by the famous Hayao Miyazaki. Castle in the Sky and Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea both have that classical feel and same art style with the two lead characters as a boy and a girl. Ponyo by the Cliff by the Sea is a bit more on the childish side, while Castle in the Sky has a deeper meaning and story. 

Apfelland Monogatari is nothing but a crappy movie. However if you enjoy it, your life could change watching Castle in the Sky or Nadia, the Secret Blue Water, two awesome anime with the same plot. 

Both films share several common elements, including airborne situations, challenging circumstances, overcoming imminent threats, the development of a bond between the main male and female protagonists, and the unwavering dedication to fulfill their respective missions.
