Very similar setting, similar main characters (a girl, who can control a mighty power and a boy, who wants to protect her), some points in the plot are also very similar. Both are masterpieces and are definitely worth watching.

Both series take place in a steampunk world that ''everything is on the sky'' and both have a strange ''couple'' as protagonists! Laputa was the anime that started the steampunk ''fashion'' in anime and Last Exile was the one that reach it at it's peek and a fan of the genre should watch both!
It's almost if the scriptwriter of Last Exile was lying in bed with fever and decided to watch Laputa to calm down, but fell asleep and dreamed what became Last Exile instead. The same plot, characters and world building is expanded into an occasionally almost psychedelic experience. Kudos to the Last Exile makers for being able to make something inspired, creative and original despite being such a blatant copy.
Both are exciting adventures with a steampunk atmosphere and interesting (even somewhat similar) plots. I highly recommend both of them.

Similar concepts like flying airships, girl with mysterious powers, people searching for an elusive entity within a storm present in both works. Last exile's production designer, Mahiro Maeda also worked on Studio Ghibli's Laputa before, so its no wonder that inspiration can be seen to be drawn from the latter.
