Both are very similar: About a boy that discovered a strange girl, who is chased and then he decides to help her. Later the girl get caught and the boy saves her with help. The dad from bouth boys - Pazu(Laputa) and Ace(Patema) - died in a accident, tryng to prove something. Together, main boy and main girl discover secrets about they adventure and try to change the bad things that might happen. And Patema Inverted as well as Laputa, are both amazing animes.
Patema Inverted basically has the exact same script, but is compacted to be 27 minutes shorter. Both films focus on a young love between a human boy and princess from another world, both have an evil organization that wants to capture the girl while the main character enlists help from unlikely allies to save her, both films have the same climax "collapse", and the main character has a lost father who was an explorer.

Both very similar concepts and both really enjoyable and adventurous movies. Both girls are linked to the sky and they meet a boy protogynous. They both go on an adventure to overcome evil.
