Anime as exceptionally beautiful and insanely detailed as these two can show you a quality of the animation that's on a very high level. The atmospheres of both shows are very similar to each other and grab you without letting you go until it's over, leaving you almost speechless. Not in subject matter but they both concern themselves with matters of the heart and the distance between humans.  One is a force separation while the other is a gradual drifting apart.  If you like anime that makes you think, watch these two.

Two people in love separated by two things that will never close or come to an end. Time and distance. Both are beautifully done (as expected of Shinkai) and have that depth to them that makes you think of Miyazaki.

They are both same director's work, if you liked the style of one, you'll likely enjoy the other. They have also similar stories, since they are both about separation of lovers who try to communicate with each other. However, the artwork of voices of a distant star is not as good as 5 cm per second's.

Though these two movies of Shinkai Makoto present two different perspectives about the effects of distance and time in a relationship, they still give me the same melancholic feeling towards the end. Voices of a Distant Star is about two people who were separated by unfortunate situations, but their commitment to each other kept them close to each other emotionally. Despite their struggles, they held onto on maintaining their intimate connection. 
On one hand, 5 Centimeters per Second shows more angles about the subject matter. Both physical distance (episode 1) and emotional gap (episode 2) are presented in the movie. Unlike VoaDS, the protagonist was the only one committed in the relationship. Overall, 5cm per second is much more mature, but seeing Voices of a distant star gives me an idea how Shinkai Makoto evolves. read more

They are made by the same director and are both visually stunning. The stories are both about a boy and a girl who like each other and get separated, but keep in touch by mail. In "Voices From A Distant Star" the girl goes into space to fight aliens and keeps in contact by sending text messages.The farther she gets the longer it takes to receive the messages. In "5 Centimeters Per Second" the boy moves and they keep in contact by sending letters to each other. But as time goes on they slowly start to separate. Both these movies are fantastic and are definitely worth watching. read more

Both have the same director. The art style is very similar, which is one of the things that i love most about Mokoto's work. The plot between 5 centimeters per second and  Voices of a distant star are different, however they both follow the theme of young romance being separated due to distance.

-Both shows represent two people relationships after break for certain reasons.
-Both shows is pretty hard to fallow, since they both have dozens of symbols.
-As typical for Shinkai works, both represents ideas in scenery.
-Both shows has amazing soundtrack, however artwork in 5cm/s is more detailed, because it's newer.
-Both shows are very realistic, but 5cm/s hasn't whole sci-fi element.

Those who liked one show, will surely like other one.

The longing for a loved one to return is the main theme in both.

Both are amazingly unique. The emotional depth is very strong considering that most or all of the dialog is done by the two main characters. There is also a great deal of stunning animation.

The ending though is quite different. There is a manga to Hoshi no Koe which provides a bit more closure. I won't reveal it, but you might like the ending of one anime over the other.

Hoshi no Koe and Byousoku 5 Centimeters are both directed by Makoto Shinkai. Similar themes are present such as exchanging letters/messages between two people in a long distance relationship. Hoshi no Koe might be considered the spiritual prototype to Byousoku 5 Centimeter in many ways.

"Voices of a Distant Star" and "5 Centimeters per Second" are both films made by Makoto Shinkai early in his career, and thus they have a lot in common both thematically and visually:

-they both have to do with a long-term relationship and two individuals drifting apart over time
-the music is very similar in both, emotional piano-based tunes
-the animation is also very similar, stunning background art, although the way the people are animated is a little unpolished
-the endings of both films are similar, end on a bit of a sad/bittersweet note

While "Voices of a Distant Star" is science-fiction and "5 Centimeters per Second" is far more realistic, there are plenty of similarities between them. If you like one you'd probably like the other one as well.

They are both work done by Makoto Shinkai. Both have similarly beautiful animation styles. Both movies have similar stories in that both main characters are separated by an obstacle (either distance or time) that interferes with their love for each other. The two main characters in both movies also haven't been with each other since they were young.

Both movies are similar in many aspects. Both are slice-of-life-ish (though The Place Promised strays from that path a few times), and the main characters are two childhood friends, a boy and a girl who have been separated for a long time. They have a distinct feeling of calmness to them, similar character designs as well as gorgeous art and animation. Both are directed by Makoto Shinkai, which is more than likely the reason for this similarity.

Both movies explore the notion of overcoming the distance between lovers. They are both directed by Makoto Shinkai and expectedly have brilliant artwork and backgrounds. They both incorporate a slice-of-life genre into the film and would be enjoyable to anyone looking for a moving romantic movie.

Same drawing style and similar characters. Both are great and worth watching. Even thought "Place promised..." is a bit more apocalyptic they still match each other perfectly. If you liked animation, characters and landscapes of "5 cm/s" then you will definitely like "Place promised in our early days" .

Very similar anime, and both are masterpieces! Amazing animation and sound, and in both anime there is a touching and very emotional story, even though sadness is a common thing. Aside of that, the ideas of the stories are very nice, and the characters as well. In general, if you've watched one of them, you definetely have to watch the other one, but I'd say both are a "must" in everyone's "watched" or "want to watch" list!

The pleasant and poetic slow pace, the great emotionality of each moment depicted, the use of warm light throughout the stunning scenery is something I appreciated in Beyond the Clouds and which I found again the same way in 5 Centimeters per Second.

Makoto Shinkai is involved in both works so expect similar themes and style of writing. (he is director and writer of both films)

In both films, there features a young main male protagonist who seemingly forms a romantic relationship with the female protagonist. The mood is calm with a lighthearted atmosphere. At the same time, they bond through connections.

The visuals/artwork in both series is also absolutely stunning.

Kimi no Na wa, your name, is simply put the better version of Byousoku 5 Centimeter. Both anime deal with the same themes and similar story ideas, only in my opinion your name handles them in a more interesting and original manner. "5 cm per second. The speed at which cherry blossom petals fall." It looks like Makoto Shinkai has directed another little minimalist masterpiece. Bearing a distant resemblance to underground coming-of-age classics such as Kimi no Na wa, 5 cm interweaves three short stories seen from the viewpoints of different characters. Each story revolves around a specific time period in the protagonist's life: his last days at primary school, graduating from high school, his early life as an adult.

If you cried in Kimi no Na wa and are looking to again, look no further than Byousoku 5 Centimeter.

Both are directed by Makoto Shinkai, with 5 Centimeter as their first breakout movie. It is the spiritual predecessor to Your Name, addressing the similar themes of separation and searching. The bittersweet feels in each are second to none, and I highly encourage exploring all of the films of this world-class director.

Byousoku 5 Centimeter is a very similar movie to Kimi no Na wa, being wrote by the same person. It follows the same style of romance story as Kimi no Na wa, but without the body swapping. 
If you liked Kimi no Na wa you will most likely like this movie too.

Both directed by the brilliant mind of director Makoto Shinkai, Kimi No Na Wa and Byousoku 5 Centimeter share a lot of similarities. For some odd reason, both films feature beautiful space scenes with comets. Both films are about star-crossed lovers wanting to meet each other. The main characters have a strong bond, even when they live far away from each other. The endings of both films are beautiful. I definitely recommend Byousoku 5 Centimeter if you love Kimi No Na Wa

If you liked 5 Centimeters Per Second then you will love Hotarubi no Mori e. They are very similar. I'd say 5 Centimeters Per Second is "happier" but I find that i liked Hotarubi no Mori e more for it's upfront sadness and the ending seemed to make more sense.

Hotarubi no Mori e have a story about love and distance, pretty similar with Byousoku 5 Centimeter.  It also doesn't put much conflicts between the couple and thus, let the viewer to feel the same emotion as the main protagonist were.

Somewhat similar artistic direction, both incorporate thematic elements of distance and letting go of an unreachable love(5 cm/s more so). Both also exhibit melancholic tones, though TokiKake is for the most part much more light-hearted and entertaining. If you liked one, definitely give the other one a shot.

Both comprises of slickly executed take on high school, young-teenage drama compressed down to the most bittersweet messages to the most heartwarming ones. 5 centimeter per second, or otherwise Byousoku 5 centimeter, is particularly harsh in depicting the traditional Japanese's customs of "I like you, so I can't fall in love with you" and the shy, slick tension within male-female relationships; in showing a clearly visualized state of beautifully crafted & intricate backgrounds, it really sets the mood for its various themes containing the true harshness in realistic, matured romance relationships. 

Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo or the Girl who leapt through time is a lot more vibrant and energetic in that it tries to bring at least some quirkiness with the main female lead. The romance develops and fades similar to 5cm per second, yet it's much less heavily emphasized. Through a supernatural confronting, the Girl who leapt through time illustrates the theme that we oftentimes only have one chance to work out a relationship correctly, though it may not be perfect. It's also beautiful, not in visuals, but with the devolvement of its initially pragmatic characters; eccentrically yet surprisingly well done character development in its short period of time.

I very much recommend both of these movies for fans of romance, drama, and bittersweet yet powerfully delivered stories. Both are compelling movies in their own respective aspects, 5cm with its mouth-dropping visuals, Toki wo Shoujo with its intricately done plot. I can't say which one is more superior, and they are not necessarily sophisticated concepts which require brains to create, but both movies are delivered in such a timeless manner which makes them classical romance tales, regardless of the medium.  read more

Neither of the anime have extremely clear nor definite endings, but are very heartwarming. 5 Centimeters mostly revolves around love and relationships while Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo shows the effects the decisions that are made can affect others.

While the plots are different, the feeling in the story and the feeling the viewer gets will probably be similar.

Both of these movies deal with slightly different topics but offer a very good and similar moral lesson which is "time waits for no one", love and separation is another subject that's tackled on that these two movies have in common.
With great production values and a great plot, it's  overall a great movie that you should definitely not miss out on.

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time has pleasing visuals, relatable main characters, and is yet another story of moving on, life, and love. The boy x girl relationship is focused on and the ending is also rather bitter sweet.

Both are magnificent romance films and incorporate intriguing tribulations encountered in maturity in a thrilling manner. Byousoku is more serious while Kakeru Shoujo contains some comedy, not to mention wacky time traveling shenanigans. Vital lessons can be learned from both.

Fair amount of similarities. Tsuki ga Kirei is not as sad.

- Both have protagonists who fall in love at a young age
- Both have pretty backgrounds(Shinkai's artwork is obviously much prettier)
- Realistic relationships in both
- Both deal with long-distance relationships, Tsuki ga Kirei less so, but it is essentially 5cm/s if Takaki didn't give up.

I got the same vibes from them i would say Tsuki Ga Kirei is the anime version of Byousoku with less depression, both are realistic romances that pretty much focus on that only, the art, OST and theme songs are also great in both

This anime felt a lot like a more in-depth version f the beginnings of 5cm per Second. Similar plot, with young middle school kids having developed some sort of friendship or relationship with Tsukigakirei going a little bit more deeply into their developing feelings for one another. Both have a similar story with how the female character moves away during their high school years, however Tsukigakirei has the ending that would pretty much be the "what if?" ending for 5cm if the two ended up working out the distance problem and ended up together. Tsuki ga Kirei is a lot more detailed, considering it is a 12 episode series as opposed to a three part special.  read more

- Both works are presented in the "story collection" format, being, therefore, films composed of three smaller stories. These stories, although more private, have a connection between them. This connection, however, is more relevant in Byousoku 5 Centimeter than in Shikioriori.
- Both films have a very sentimental central theme and around a specific feeling. In Shikioriori, the stories revolve around youth and nostalgia, evoking an atmosphere and addressing individual dilemmas originating in childhood and adolescence. On the other hand, in Byousoku 5 Centimeter, the main theme is the distance that is drawn between a couple and the feelings resulting from this separation. Shikioriori's last story, in particular, looks a lot like Byousoku 5 Centimeter.
- Both Byousoku 5 Centimeter and Shikioriori have a similar atmosphere and representations. Although the first takes place in Japan and the second in China, both contain cultural elements from each country. Shikioriori is "Byousoku 5 cm, but in China"

In short it is the best review for Shiki Oriori Movie, since it is directly inspired by that Makoto Shinkai's movie, had his hand in the production, by the same studio.

The same plot of  youngsters love in past getting frustrated by unlucky or random circumstances. And all with amazing representation of life in China and its changes over time.

You can safely say that Shikioriori is "Byousoku 2 - This time, in China".

Both movies are similar indeed, for starters, its obviously splitted into 3 chapters, each with a story to tell. But generally the chapters have a same theme to its respective movie's title. Flavors of youth is about the reminiscence of youth. 5 centimetres per second is about sustaining long distance relationships. However, flavors of youth is a "downgrade" and more simplistic version of 5 centimetres per second. btw by " downgrade" i dont mean its bad. 5 Centimetres per second has a far more sophisticated plotline that's true meanings and the virtues to be taught are deep as heck, while flavors of youth is much more straightforward and easy to understand. both movies are great as heck, especially 5 centimetres per second. 🤧🤧🤧🤧 pls bring tissue boxes. yes. boxes. not even a box is sufficient.  read more

Both films have the same plot of different stories in one movie all mixed into one. Both have stunning visuals, amazing animation and amazing plot and story. Also you'll probably get confused more than once watching one of these films if you don't pay attention for a split second.

Although at the beginning of CLANNAD ~After Story~, it starts off as mostly a comedy, it gets much more deeper. They both have the same pain of losing the person you love, have the same feelings and emotions. To be honest, Tomoya reminded me of Takaki in the way they dealed with everything. They also both have absolutely beautiful backgrounds, although 5 cm Per Second's was a bit more detailed. and the last thing, they both make you want to cry.

Two lifelike series full of drama, watching them will make your eye on life more clear. The creators show us the ordeals anyone could have experienced or will experience: first love, disenchantment of one's life, death of one's dear people. I like these series for their  kindness and warmth. If you happen to watch them, i suggest you start with "5cm" to enter "C:AS" in appropriate mood; after having a small depression ravine when you finish the first one you should feel clarification at the end of the second. Also,  you'll have the possibility of enjoying two top notch drawing animes in a row. read more

If you enjoyed Clannad: After Story, then you'll enjoy Byousoku 5 Centimeter's similar heart-crushing (but still somehow beautiful) story that doesn't offer anything to make you feel better afterward.  Both shows leave the viewer with that heavy, bitter "Why did it have to turn out this way; I desperately wish I could go back and do it over" feeling.

The dramatic story and the wonderful art of Makoto Shinkai are in bouth animes. Even though in Ef he did only the backgrounds he still did a wonderfull job. The breathtaking views make bout animes very enjoyable. Even though the drama is wonderful made in bouth of them, the ending is not so dramatic for ef- a tale of memories. The characters suffer because of love and mature because of the same rason. The story is very good developed and the sad parts are so deep that it could make anybody cry.
The OST is something you won't miss after you watch them. I especualy love ef opening of ef- a tale of memories 
I personaly love this 2 animes and I think that they are very similar: short but deep. They are stories that deserv to be rememberd.

Makoto Shinkai played a big part in both, so that's a guarantee of at least artistic quality. Beyond that, both these animes are very simple and poignant dramas that deal with adolescent romance, and also heavily explore the theme of distance--Ef in the form of memory loss for one, and 5 cm/s with physical and temporal distance. Both exhibit a rather cold and melancholic atmosphere, and are rather tragic--though Ef delivers a happy ending in the vein of Clannad whereas 5 cm/s does not. If you liked one of them, you'll certainly enjoy the other.

While the manga version of Kimi no Iru Machi is unlike 5cm Per Second, the anime version is.  Both construct a romance that is present despite a large separation between the two protagonists.  The story-telling is also similar between the two; both anime titles tell their respective stories out of order. While Kimi no Iru Machi is a bit more light hearted than 5 cm Per Second, it has the same dark underlying tone. Finally, the music of Kimi no Iru Machi and 5cm Per Second both involve a beautiful piano piece that creates a very enriching atmosphere for the respective series.

These are two short anime that show the difficulties of maintaining a long-distance relationship. Male and female leads inevitably become distant to each other because of the distance in their living quarters. Both have a bitter-sweet feel.

As a movie, 5cm/s is more artistic and compressed while HnC accompanies its characters for several years which makes the viewer's experience even more real, beautiful and bittersweet.

Art, backdrop scenery, and color manipulation are spectacular in both. AIR fully develops the fragility of love and difficulty of human connection invoked in 5 cm. Both play on the theme of inevitable loss. 5 cm's brilliant music and use of silence is replicated in AIR.

If you like animes where the main focus is love and relationships between characters, and all the emotions that come from it, then you will like these two shows. Both deal with a lot of powerful dramatic themes, such as sorrow and nostalgia. They deal mostly with being separated from the person you love/care about, and how that can affect your life. During the course of the show you might get attached to the characters and really experience their struggle and their pain. Plus, you can really relate to the characters if you have been through something similar (and perhaps even if you have not). If you watched one of them, and liked it then you are likely to like the other as well. read more

In both movies the female protagonist transferred to another school. In both movies after a few years pass they meet up again and hang out. The differences is the female isn't bullied, both protagonists don't try to kill each other like Koe no Katachi. Another difference is in 5 centimeters per second the male doesn't have problems with other people and has friends.

Space and Time, two abstracts that can't be felt or touch. In this series the elderly man practically goes back in time in term of his memories. As his is remembering all the joyful memories, it can be said that time separated him from him family slowly.

 While in 5 Centimeter per Second, Akari and Takaki are slowly separated by space, with their constant routine of moving from town to town. Slowly growing farther and farther apart from each other, it made it harder for them to meet each other face to face.

Time and space might be moving at a pace that we always overlook, but as both grows on the damage they leave grows more and more wider. read more

Saying goodbye is hard.

The papercut theatre style of animating in Tabi Machi may be in wild contract to the richly detailed and almost sensual art and animation of 5cm Per Second, but both are bittersweet stories about goodbyes. Much like real partings there is little closure in either series, with only vaguely defined beginnings, middles, and ends. Both can come across as a little over-the-top, a little pretentious, and a little forced at times, but all that applies to saying goodbye in real life too I guess.

Although the bad rating that most people gives Uchiage Hanabi, I feel this movie has a lot of emotion on visuals (I mean, it's Shaft), and really in the story, although a lot of people who watch it thinks it's disappointing. I mean, it's not your conventional movie. You can feel there's a lot of plot holes but you can feel too that these are made intentionally, making the story unique with these actions of the main characters. Not only that, but it's also amazing how they make the visuals tell the story. How that sets apart the reality from the imagination of Norimichi. For my opinion, this is not a powerful movie such as Byousoku 5 Centimeter, but it's fantastically made and I think more people should give a try with an open mind, and not thinking that this movie is about the love of two young students (because it isn't, and some reviewers say that the movie fails on that part when it's not what the story is all about), but about the differentiation of reality and what it's not. read more

well, to be honest when i first heard of this young director, Makoto Shinkai, and how he has been praised as the next generation to suceed miyazaki i was of course skeptical. then i brought myself to buy a couple of his films. the first i watched was 'voices of a distant sta'r..it was short but so very intresting, i had never seen animation and story lines like it anywhere...i did some research on it and Shinkai made his first couple films with nothing more than his apple computer and some software...to be honest the guy is a genius for what he had accomplished. of his works thus far i would say his best is by far 'a place promised in our early days' but as far as re-galing him as the next miyazaki look no further than '5 cm per second' to leave you aw-struck and breathless. i will not get into the spoilers (you will just have to watch it yourself) but kinda like the 'animatrix' it is a coalition of different story lines that wrap up into one of the greatest movies of the new century. i recomend  it with all of my being and hope you will share in its beauty. read more

Both movie tells the story of two childhood friends in love. You may or may not get the same feeling, but I really feel that at one point of the movie, it reminds me of Byousoku 5 Centimeter when the two childhood friends get separated and starting to find a new love (even if it comes from misunderstanding) while still hold the love of the childhood friend dearly.

Not completely similar, but in both stories the main characters refuse to admit that they Love each other and struggle through many things because of that. They keep in touch, but their relationship together is a lot close then just friends.

The way True Tears makes you feel after one episode will make you fall in love with 5 centimeters per second, this short movie (or 3 ovas) just grips you tight and doesnt let go until you let out a tear. It deals with relationship issues over distance and close and personall. Its a deffinetly must see anime! How ever if you have seen 5 centimeters, true tears is an anime for you! Its short sweet and simple with a great story line you can easially fall in love with. Once either one of the shows is over your gonna want to beg for more from these amazing story writers read more

Yes, I know. Completely different atmosphere, feeling, and genre. But they both have a good, strong storyline with a good pacing throughout the whole anime. They are both really short, 5cm/s is a 3 episode movie while Denpa teki na kanojo is a 2 episode ova. Also, the setting and character development are realistic, meaning not too supernatural or magical.

Both are, essentially, meditations on a very specific moment (or, well, series of moments) rather than plot-driven stories. They’re more poetry, in that sense, than narrative, focusing on the emotional truths of a given scenario (how quickly does change happen? how does distance affect love?) more than the actions of that scenario—though they both relay those emotions almost exclusively by the actions of the characters rather than with lots of heavy monologuing.

•both are an amazing watch that will forever be worthwhile 
•both display the perfection of music accompanied by beautiful animation into a story that will leave the viewer wanting more
•both anime are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT IN LENGTH for a 119 second clip to a 1hr + 30mins
•both visibly show the protagonists of the story wanting more out of life, but then both of the animes part way in their decisions, one working hard towards there own goal, while the other stops short and just slowly becomes a sad story
•they are very similar in the way of beautiful music/animation and will want to see more, and leave the viewer into thinking 'WHY IS IT ONLY A 119 SECOND FILM'
