That episode was fucked up. Seeing those people getting ecorched and hearing their screams, it made me fucking sick. I'm glad Bato made the right choice, if he had killed him, the CIA would have won. Even in the future, the CIA is still massive pile of shit.

That was intense.
Good development of Batou as a character. The killings reminded me of Silence of the Lambs XD
A great episode..

Nice try by Batou, now it's his turn, so we find out a bit about his past and what his sins. Not bad storytelling, full of action and implications of ethical and political issues.
Graphically, the episode is better than the last, but not flawless.
Great OST instead.
Plot with a nice twist, I like it.

Now I know why the last episode was just talking; Production IG spent all of the budget on this episode! XD

But yeah, amazing episode. Very violent and graphic, but I feel like it was done in a tasteful way. Also, we got to see more about Batou's past. Damn, he has been through a lot...

To those saying there's nothing to the American portrayal, I have one thing to say to you: World War II.

That the Americans were the bad guys in this fictional WWIII seems very jab-like to me.

Still, it was an interesting (and gruesome) episode. I liked the expansion on Batou's character.

Has nothing to do with WWII. Read up on the CIA's antics in South America. This episode's antagonists are just an extrapolation of the CIA's misdeeds in that continent.

Was hoping for a Batou-centric episode, boy this delivered. I had a feeling he had close ties to his military history judging by how he acts. Still lifts weights despite people telling him it's useless and keeps himself 'fit' despite his body, often is a calm voice of reason on the scene and just has the feel of a marine I guess. Really cool to see a lot of that fall apart this episode and show a little of what makes up his character.

Come on, skinning someone alive is a bit overboard... those screams made me cringe... the character development was good though.

God damn that guy's a sadistic bastard. Not only does he do such horrible things but he forces them to watch it happen.

Crazy that there is actually a military group full of guys who would go into countries to perform fucked up shit like that on a regular basis.

This was such a beautiful episode. I love how they pictured Bateau being that guy who refreshes after dramatic burdens from the past and stays loyal to his new game. Somehow this always spoke into me and I'm glad Ghost in the Shell took some time to talk over this matter. The conclussion is -- if you're devoted to something as much as Bateau was to his soldier's craft, your habits won't die easily.

Yes, it's a war crime.

It's not public knowledge though.

But in the episode they didn't mention the American side taking responsibility aside from terminating soldiers that went rogue.

Because they didn't take responsibility and officially deny that it even happened as was made clear in the episode.

Aside from the flaying, this was mostly a ho hum episode, not really bad.

It was a decent enough character backstory episode.

Pretty gruesome though to make his victims watch the flaying at the same time its happening.

Rewatching. I knew this episode was coming, but still cringed at the video. You'd think it wouldn't bother me since I'm fine with anime gore, but GitS just does it so well. And without being totally explicit either. Just look at the realistic character reactions.

Just damn. Fantastic episode. Especially for Batou's characterization.
One of the episodes I remember even years into the future.

That was really terrifying...
I wish project like that didn't exist in real life, but sadly... :(

Crazy. That was like a Vietnam for Batou.

Kind of reminded me of Apocalypse Now, specifically that part where Brando talks about how hacking off the arms of inoculated children served as a singularly ruthless military tactic.

Wow... I gotta say, Batou as a character recieved some much needed depth! I think with how these stand alone episodes are directed, im starting to... Care about the cast on a personal level. I felt for Batou in this episode, ajd my respect for him solidified by his action to spare the guy, as his war was long over.

Id like to hear/know more about the GITS's geography, didnt know there was an American Empire before this episode.

So glad to be getting some development for Batou! But what we really need at this point is a Togusa episode. He's definitely been the flattest secondary character so far.

Respect for Batou. He really kept his cards close to his chest in this one.

Interesting info-drop about the existence of an 'American Empire'. Really, now that's quite far-fetched, but still intriguing.

Project Sunset seems to be inspired from CIA's Phoenix Program in the Vietnam War, through which reportedly civilians were captured and tortured.

I wonder how Marco got into the country in the first place. I have a feeling the CIA smuggled him into Japan since they were planning for Batou to be their cleanup crew.

Great, great episode. Intense and action packed. And we get to know a bit more about Batou

I'd actually never noticed that before since the flashbacks are pretty far apart.

I think the implication might be that Batou didn't actually catch Marco in the act.

Only the second flashback with the different guy was real, and he already killed him on the spot(speculation on my part).

I think so too. Or it might be an another soldier kept killing after the war as Batou stated before.
