as for made in abyss I do think it deserves a shot. as it's not what it seem to be in the trailer it's a deep and creative anime serie that's like no other. it's similar in a way to hxh as both are about adventures and collecting treasures and exploring the unknown if you go to hxh page here in myanimelist you will see that made in abyss is one of the top recommendations. the story is even a bit of similar... if you like kino no tabi, Haibane Renmei, Serial Experiments Lain... then you will likely enjoy made in abyss.
sick list
I noticed your main complaint was that Inu was missing for a majority of the manga. In your review you wrote, "There is no in-universe reason for why our elderly protagonist would not have heard the cries of dozens of people being shot to death."
I assume that this would be in reference to the police station moment, but there are many in-universe reasons as to why he would be missing. First of all, if Inu did not show up, it can logically be inferred that he would be busy saving other people. For instance, if he was in the middle of rescuing many people from a burning building, he would not up and stop to fly all the way over town to save people who he might not make it to in time.
Secondly, if the police are massively dealing with a threat, you would think that the police have the situation under control. Therefore, if you had the option to go save innocent people versus helping the giant police squadron apprehend a criminal, you would probably trust their capable hands and not risk exposing yourself as a cyborg.
Thirdly, earlier on it was said that the cyborgs can control their hearing. Inu could have taken a break from saving people to walk his dog in peace for example (it can be seen that he takes breaks when he sits down for dinner with his family). Or we could assume that he was working at that time, because he still has his job that he works at to provide for his family (we can see he still works because in the apocalypse chapter he still went to his job).
If you were referring to the earlier moments when Shishigami was slaughtering families in their homes; in chapter 41, when the antagonist is confessing all he had done to his "new family" he said, "After class I would take the first train and go... randomly to cities I didn't know." This pretty much addresses this plot hole and definitely explains why the protagonist is missing for a looong time. I think that the way the story line flowed in the way where lots of focus on the antagonist did an excellent job at fleshing out the internal struggles of him and the moral conflicts as well. Unfortunately, this was not really shown to be clear until much later, as in 30 chapters, but in chapter 10 on his way to begin his massacre it can be seen that he boarded a train then a bus.
I hope this helps you to enjoy this great manga more :)
