I rate anime based on enjoyment. If an anime has a writing flaw, bad character development, sloppy animation, or an unappealing art style, then that's going to affect my enjoyment, and my rating will be lower. I don't see any reason to call this way of judging shows "objective", when it's common sense that how many flaws a show has will obviously affect your perception of an anime. Likewise, if a show is interesting, entertaining, or captivating enough - I'll be able to forgive more flaws from it than I would other anime. This is because if a product is so great that it's able to rise above it's many flaws, that in and of itself is a huge accomplishment. If you're anime is so good that it's flaws hardly impact enjoyment - then your anime must be doing something really right.
My rating scale is put into subdivisions of "low", "mid", and "strong". This is a way for me to be more specific about how strong or weak an anime is, as there can be HUGE variation in quality - even in the same rating. Pinpointing if an anime is a 66 or a 67 is too complex, so instead I put them in more general subdivisions. For example - on a 100 point rating scale, A light score has an ending value of 00, 01, 02, or 03, A mid score has an ending value of 04, 05, or 06, and a strong score would have an ending value of 07, 08, 09. So a "light 8/10" would be an 80-83, a "mid 8/10" would be an 84-86, a "strong 8/10" would be an 87-89.
10/10:
An anime that defines itself as one of my absolute favorites. It is an extremely enjoyable, high quality anime. Whatever problems there may be, they barely hinder the overall experience as a whole. A resonating piece that stays with me, and that proves itself to be above and beyond most entertainment in general. Favorite. 100.
9/10:
An anime that is above most others. Likely has a conceptual or emotional appeal at least somewhat significant to me. While these anime might have too many grievances or setbacks to be absolute favorites, they still stand taller than a majority of anime. Lesser Favorite. 90-99.
8/10:
An anime that goes beyond the necessary requirements for a good production. This is the first score on my scoring system that indicates something truly great. There are some flaws here, but while these anime aren't as spectacular as my 9's and 10's, I would still consider these works to be easily recommendable. Great. 80-89.
7/10:
An anime which is very enjoyable. These anime are mostly entertaining throughout, but either lack a certain emotional resonance, or quality control to smooth out the rough edges. They may have multiple significant flaws, but still make up for it for the most part. Really Good. 70-79.
6/10:
An anime which is enjoyable, with more pros than cons. However, numerous flaws are present and affect enjoyment greatly, making it not as appealing as it possibly could be. Still, an anime with a lot of good things going on. Good. 60-69.
5/10:
An anime with about as many positive qualities as negative ones. These anime can often be a drag to get through because of their inoffensiveness. Though these aren't even close to being bad, their quality is disappointing. This is about the point in which I would question whether an initial watch is even worth it. Mediocre. 50-59.
4/10:
An anime which has slightly more negative aspects than positive ones. These anime are almost as decent as they are bad, but tilt more in the negative direction as a whole. Minimal enjoyment can be had, but it is fairly sparse - few and far between. This is not the point in which I consider an anime as a whole bad. Sub-par. 40-49.
3/10:
An anime which has enough problems as to make it a negative experience as a whole. While these anime aren't entirely without merit, and indeed have some positive qualities, these are overall highly disappointing and worth skipping. Bad. 30-39.
2/10:
An anime which is not only bad, but downright terrible. These anime have very few redeeming qualities that, unfortunately, don't make up for the many mistakes that are made. 2's tend to be anime that aren't complete train-wrecks in every single department of execution and production ... but they are so wretched that they still stand out as particularly vile. Not the absolute worst anime out there, but close to it. Terrible. 20-29.
1/10:
An anime that defines the worst of the worst. Likely no redeeming qualities at all, and if there are any, they don't make up for the heinous shit that is forced upon me. The anime isn't just unenjoyable, it's frustrating, annoying, and insulting to the mind. Absolutely, the worst you could possibly watch. Horrendous. 0-19.
The Second Chances Board :
Gunbuster : A show that is praised a lot more than I would have expected based on initial viewing.
Hunter x Hunter(2011) : This show .... it frustrates me. I've tried watching it three seperate times! Once I got through to 128 episodes, and then dropped it right as I was about to finish. Another time I got to 20 episodes in. This last time I got about 40 episodes in. The worst thing of all - my opinion on its numerous qualities changes every time I try to watch it through! It's just so long, I don't know if i'll ever finish it honestly. But I'll try ...
Katanagatari : I honestly would have to call bullshit on the ending of this show. It felt really forced, like the show was trying too hard to connect all of its themes to one central point ... but couldn't do it well. We'll have to see how I feel upon rewatch.
Psycho Pass : Most of this show felt like it had a lot of issues or plot holes, but the last few episodes were so satisfying that I don't know if i'd feel the same on rewatch.
Serial Experiments Lain : I've tried to watch this multiple times. Pretty boring, but i'll keep digging that tunnel!(aye lion king reference lmao!!!11!11!1!)
Steins;Gate : Barely remember this shizzle
Trigun : The amount of times I've tried to watch this is almost uncountable. So, 3. Anyway, I even have this on DVD. Just meh ... I will have to try sometime later. Later, I promise! PROMISE! Nah, not now though.
Milestones Note : Milestones are achieved when a show is completed at a certain spot in my career. Milestones are only considered if the show (or manga) was finished at said point. There are multiple shows (or mangas) that were started (much) earlier and/or came close to being a 'milestone', but weren't finished into (much) later and as such didn't make the list. Examples : Hunter x Hunter (2011) , Ouran High School Host Club, etc. Also, I consider OVA's(Drifters of the Dead), Movies(Conqueror of Shamballa), Specials(Baccano! Specials), and other seasons which are titled as different entities(Heaven's Lost Property : Forte, Black Lagoon Second Barrage) as different points in my anime career.
1st Anime : High School DxD
50th Anime : Devilman: Crybaby
100th Anime : Serial Experiments Lain
I am a fairly new anime fan, and as of April 30th, I have only been watching anime for about 2 months and 28 days(The first anime I watched I started watching on February 2nd,2015). My goal is to watch as much anime as I can to get affiliated with the medium, and understand the values presented within its core.
Oh, I also watched Eva along with EoE; just got reminded that you asked me about it once I've gotten around to them. Both are masterful character studies of depression and what leads to self-destructive behavior; empathetic, personal, and very intimate, I can definitely see their influence and appeal for many. Though I personally couldn't connect with them as much as I'd like to, I can respect both for what they did and what they are, and I savored their technical aspect and aesthetics; EoE, in particular, is mind-blowing. Lemme know if you want my more comprehensive thoughts. Have a good day :)
Well despite not really 'getting it' at the time, I was really obsessive over the show, and for a long time. For some reason I liked it that much and that's why I still have it at an 8. And I guess it'll stay that way until a future rewatch
Even if I'd gotten those recommended to me, I never decided to watch them. Thanks a lot for the recs, I probably will enjoy most if not all of them thoroughly. And like you said, it'll help me expand and pin down my tastes
I'll probably check out Psycho pass first. And I don't mind the social experiment stuff lol, if that's the case I'll get back to you about my thoughts on it after watching Rahxephon.
Hey not a problem you don't need to worry about that with me I completely understand. Reply to me when you can. I figured you were busy with stuff.
And you got a PS5 awesome I have one as well any games you planning on getting to play on it. I just beat God of War Ragnorok last weekend on it. I actually recommend Stray it's a short and cheaper game but it's a lot of fun and has great visuals.
Preoccupying yourself with lowering your average score sounds pretty rough. I'm watching a few shows atm that'll probably dent mine, but I'm watching them with a friend so it's fun.
Keep watching that great stuff instead.
Redline then Ghost in the Shell -- I bet that was some tonal whiplash. But yeah, I agree! I love '95 to bits, primarily its griminess, and the fluidity of movement in the characters. Ogura's work is also stunning and Kawai's OST fits so well! I could list all day.
I'd really recommend 2nd GIG. You've already seen the first season, so you know what you're getting yourself in to already. I'd say 2nd GIG will be better if you're looking for something closer to a traditional 'story'. SAC was a series of segmented ideas, but 2nd GIG is a lot tighter and character-focused. It's something else I could wax on about for paragraphs, but I won't spoil or bore you.

I'm so sorry for my slow reply, I'm not that active on the community side of MAL these days
Looking forward to talking with you about Anime, so what shows are you planning on watching the next season? ^_^
Also a Happy New Year to you! Hope you have a good one.
