Madoka is basically the spiritual successor to Mai Hime. They are both dark subversions of the Mahou Shoujo genre.

Battles of superpower and both have proxies of battle engaged characters. Like dolls.

In both series the characters must participate in a cruel game and defeat one another, and the last one standing is about to obtain enormous power. However, things don't always go as planned. ;3

In Mai-HiME, the Hime fight eachother untill there is one left. Much like the sekirei. They also both have some type of orginization behind it, to an extent. The girls both have some type of magical powers that they use to fight each other (Mai-HiME uses summons along with other powers). Both also have some fanservice, although sekirei has a lot more of it than Mai-Hime.

-Both animes are about receiving or meeting a third party to supply you with powers to fight in a survival game, and aim to defeat the other parties to win the game. -Both have groups that build bonds over the time they spend together.

Similar stories, both feature a wide range of characters who fight to protect what they consider precious. In both anime many characters will die because of the mystifying "game".

Primarily a female cast, magic, mecha and fun

Started as an ordinary school girl, Mai and Nanoha had a twist of fate that changed their whole life. In both stories, the main characters gained power which led them to be an experienced user of magic as they met foes and allies along the way.

In both anime the protagonists can telepathically control mechanical monsters and make them fight for them.

Both Mai-Hime and Genei wo Kakeru Taiyou details of young girls who has acquired supernatural battles to battle against specific monsters that appears throughout the series. Through experience, they fight for what they believe in and their abilities are enhanced as the series progresses. The main female protagonist in both series are determined and often willing to help in others in need. There is some additional element of romance in Mai-HiME. However at the same time, both series makes progresses in character relationships. There is also senses of emotions later on in both series as well.

For starters both series have girls as leads and who do all the action. Both series have characters fighting each other for this or that reason. Both series have an observer who look over what is happening and push characters against each other. Both have similar type of ending. In both series characters have unique personalities. Both shows are set at school. Both shows have some yuri feels. Differences: Akuma is about assassins while Mai HiME is about normal people, well as normal as you can call them Akuma has a slightly darker feel to it with some blood, Mai HiME is more friendly. Mai HiME also has more comedy elements Mai HiME has more  read more

A contest only has one winner and in both series, the ultimate prize is up for grabs. Thus, both series has the battle royal theme featuring characters using their supernatural abilities to win. There is plenty of action in both series and a cast of characters of stark personalities, goals, and ideologies. As episodes progresses, more truth is revealed as drama and dark secrets revealed. While Fate/Zero lacks up romance, it makes it up for its stunning visuals. Both series also contain powerful soundtrack by the talented Yuki Kajiura. Both series are certainly something to remember by.

Serena and the school girls both have similar magical powers and have to deal with it.

Both are mahou shoujo shows that start out happy, but then become very dark and sometimes brutal. Both show the gradual mental breakdown of the protagonists.

Yes, both of these stories are extremely different. They have completely different plot lines but they share an underlying similarity. The most obvious would be the presence of creatures that the main characters are able to summon, and do battle with. The cost of defeat comes at a high cost in both series, and because of this much drama and tragedy ensues.
report Recommended by Crystal
Both are set in a high school where the females hold special fighting abilities. Mai-Hime is more magical and contains more serious drama.
report Recommended by EveningRain
They have a similar progression throughout. Starting from a sort of practice game in the beginning to finding itself trailing down a darker path as the series progresses. -Both series have several people caught up in an event motivated by someone with a specific goal.

Chrono Crusade and Mai both deal with similar themes, an older sister and a younger brother, death, destruction and magic. Both get pretty heavy later in their series but still have their share of comedic elements.

in both animes, both of the main characters loses their loved ones. soukou no strain has strain while himes have child. strain and childs are both companions and power source of the main characters. the overall feel to both animes are similar too.

its basicly the same story format. kids with psychic powers, at a school just for them. they are both love stories. and tear jerkers, if you read the mangas also.

Both series center around super-powered girls who can materialize weapons to fight evil beings and whose powers are linked to another person close to them with romantic/ecchi undertones. In both, the girls fight each other in power struggles for their own goals and to escape sinister fates.

Both anime have female main characters, take place on or nearby a school, and have mech battles. A lot of the drama comes from character interactions, and there are some love triangles and shoujo ai themes. While the overall plots are different, you can see similar story elements as the shows progress.

They both are about girls who acquire magical powers and use these powers to fight monsters. Mai-hime has a much larger character cast though and is more about magic and mecha monsters as power whereas Symphogear is about music and has more science fiction. Mai-Hime is much stronger all around, but they are still similar in many ways.
report Recommended by Asfaria
has a school dynamic shows relationship between multiple students has cool human weapon relationship
report Recommended by nerdyalbert
Anime about people who use strange creatures to fight. Both are darker and more psychological than they initially seem, though Mai-Hime is much better. Both include several different genres and jump around between them.

While it might not be something every Saki viewer would like I still think it deserves a recommendation to most viewers. The constant references to Nodoka's breasts certainly remind me of similar events in regards to Mai-HiME's protagonist Mai. Mai-HiME has the same high school setting, but whilst Saki keeps it that way Mai-HiME changes into something more more along the lines of sic-fi/supernatural. It also gets quite a bit darker then Saki, though that isn't very hard given the light hearted feel of the anime. The amount of yuri undertones are about the same though I would rate Mai-HiME's as a bit higher given  read more

There's a sense of competition among many of the characters in the series. They all have different abilities to aid them in combat. The main protagonist from both series are introduced to a world where there is danger and their lives will never ever be the same again. Both series also has a school life setting, drama, comedy, and romance.

Powers Art looks alike Some of the same characters Saving the world kind of story

Despite the more sic-fi like genre in Mai-HiME the yuri and slice of life are seen in both series. In Mai-HiMe it is a lot more subtext. It is only later on that the relationships/love between characters becomes a lot more clear though it is not viewed upon as favourably. Shizuru in particular remind me a lot of Shizuma in their similar school/social standing as well as their flirtatious attitudes though one is far less featured then the other. Either way it is a great show and I do recommend it.

While the plots are pretty different, both anime have a similarity in which the girls with magical powers are able to summon spiritual beasts to aid them in battle
report Recommended by Noodle070
They feature teenagers controlling mechas (though it's a partner relationship in Mai-Hime). They feature dark twists on their respective genres (Magical girl for MH and Mecha for NGE). The main characters are often conflicted with multiple difficult choices that could decide the fate of mankind.
report Recommended by Asfaria
The biggest similarity between Mai-HiME and Ayakashi is the ability to summon creatures to help during battles, and they both have a good amount of action. The characters also spend a lot of time at school. While the plots are pretty different, they can both get pretty dark.

It has a lot of similar romantic comedy elements. They also both have some sort of magic. The fan service is something also they share.

What both these series have in common is an unforgettable soundtrack, a ton of material for yuri-shipping and the constant, breathtaking action. The protagonists Ange and Mai are similarly forced to grow stronger in order to cope with a harsh environment. Both series have a large and varied cast that'll make you get attached to at least a few characters. Both also have girls fighting either beasts or other girls.

Two anime that focus on a group of girls who get powers to fight monsters of mysterious origin. In both of them the reasons for the fight and consequences of the powers are not clear at the beginning. Both can be considered as magical girl anime with darker twist, but at the same time they still give the feeling of hope. There is a good mix of comedy and tragic moments. There are other things that give a similar feel, however describing them into detail would go into spoiler territory of both.

has a story about friendship, have characters that are fun and quirky, in strike witches they fight the neuroi, in mai hime they fight the orphans
report Recommended by muhamesri
Female Main Cast with a mix of action and slice of life/humor. Both offer a bitter taste of tragedy. To me Xenoglossia essentially feels like a better version of Mai-Hime.
report Recommended by bujideyokatta
Both slice-of-life About female students/teenagers who have weapons that serve and/or protect them. Can, and are used to fight one another. In Mai-Hime, the weapons are called "Childs" and in Busuo Shinki, the weapons are called "Shinki" Both called Princess. Hime is in both tittles meaning princess. (In the second half of the kanji word for shinki)

Granbelm and Mai-HiME showcase girls who fight using magic and mech powers. As both shows progress, they get darker, have plot twists, and share even more similarities

Battle-royale theme with characters fighting for the ultimate glory and prize. The music soundtrack in both series is also performed by Yuki Kajiura. Both series contain plenty of great action, drama, and characters with various conflicting personalities.

1. Both shows involve a power that only girls can use: In SIW, characters can summon "LRIGs" (card avatars) to play in card battles while in Mai-HiME they can summon "Childs" (mechanical monsters) to help them fight. 2. Using this power comes with risks. 3. Characters fight for something they hold dearly. 4. Both shows get progressively darker. Although the settings and circumstances are different, if you like one anime, I think you'll like the other! :)

The main similarity between Mai-HiME and Blade Dance is that characters are able to summon a spirit beast to aid them in battle. Both shows also take place in a school setting and have a mostly female cast.
report Recommended by Noodle070
In both shows, girls with superpowers use mechanical summons to engage in battle. The fighting is more organized in VPC (tournament style) than in Mai-HiME (they don't know when enemies will show up, and they must be prepared to fight on the spot)
report Recommended by Noodle070
Both anime involve a main character who gains the power to summon a robotic being to fight for and protect them (more characters can do so in Mai-HiME). They start off lighthearted and comedic, but take a darker turn and get very serious and angsty. The main charcters go through quite a lot of difficult, traumatic situations, yet try their best to make life better for everyone.
report Recommended by Noodle070
Though it may have a little less comedy thrown in, this one's also action-packed with all of the usual elements (romance, high school woes, teenagers fighting like they know what the hell they're doing etc) thrown in. Code Geass might be taking it to the next level though, you'll have to see for yourself—definitely puts you on the edge of your seat.

Firstly both anime are about school and teenagers and both are mostly concentrated on female characters with super powers. Both series have good sense of humor as well as mini yuri involvement. The animation is nice and it has some cool action scenes, so yeh I do recommend it. Ah, and they both have dramatic moment involvement as well.

The story in both anime revolves around teenage girls who live their stereotypical highschool lives full of yuri tendencies and word jokes, all the while fighting evil monsters which seem to flood both worlds for no apparent reason. The most striking similarity between the two shows is the use of spiritual beasts in battle, known as Ga-Rei in Ga-Rei Zero, and Childs in Mai-HiME. The twist in both stories is that soon, things start to get serious - main characters start to die, friends battle to the death and angst ensues. On top of these similarities, Ga-Rei also seems to rip some characters completely from  read more

Shoujo ai you can see and feel. Both are action packed and sometimes mecha.

In both series are people with unusual skills who are fighting with dangerous enemies... and friends. Dramatic, but funny. Tears and laugh. Plots aren't similar. I mean Mai-HiME has better one. But both of them are interesting.

Although Mai-Hime starts off light-hearted, once its story gets going there's a lot of similarities between it and X. Both have intensely dramatic scenarios between characters involved in a war of super powers.

Both deal with advanced Technology with advanced mech magic giving them both a much darker story which is a unique change of pace of the averge magical girl animes. Striker S is the 3rd season of the Nanoha Franchise which has a very similar darker military mech story much like My Hime, both use miliary advanced weapon summon skills, plasma lazers, ect.

When watching Shattered Angels all i could was 'Wow, this is similar to Mai-Hime'. I think it's the Mecha and romance. It's also like Mai-Otome, too. If you like one, I definitely recommend giving the other a try.

Both magical girl animes. They both have interesting themes of a darker storyline coming out of the lighthearted beginning and they're both action packed and emotionally gripping. If you liked Mai-HiME, check this one out!
report Recommended by Kohppa
They are very similar. The character design and animation are similar, and both stories involve different groups taking advantage of one other to achieve some spiritual goal. In both stories, the chosen ones can use supernatural powers to save/destroy the planet, and in the end it's love and peace that win. In other words, they are stereotypically the same.

The second season of Queen's Blade plays out similarly to Mai-HiME's second half.

Both anime's are similiar in where each character develope's a new power, only difference is in mai hime. They controll hime's and in ROD you can controll the power of the 5 elements of nature.

Mai-HiME and Shoujo Kakumei Utena/Revolutionary Girl Utena both deconstruct the magical girl genre in their own way. In both shows, characters' affections for the person most important to them are explored in depth. There are definitely some similar plot points and Mai-HiME seems to have some imagery directly inspired by Utena. The importance of friendships between girls is explored and both shows have canon lesbian and/or bisexual female characters. Both shows deal with men trying to control women's bodies and women's roles and in each show women fight for agency.
report Recommended by VeraIcon
Both anime have many female characters as leads; action (girls fight monster(mai-hime)/ fight wars with other countries using "heavenly" weapons (simoun)); yuri, especially simoun though mai-hime does show some signs of yuri and both have a "destiny" to follow. Overall, very similar but in different situations and plots. If you like one of them, you'll definitely like the other, no doubt! =)

well let's see.. there's the mecha, the fighting for justice, the comedy, the love-story, the high school drama, the partial nudity.. guess it's pretty similar.. actually, it's even better than mai-hime in my opinion.. especially when you get to the next 2 seasons.. yep.
