Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica

Madoka is basically the spiritual successor to Mai Hime. They are both dark subversions of the Mahou Shoujo genre.
Both give the magical girl genre a dark twist, they are great shows for anyone interested in a good plot, not just mahou shoujou fans. Both have soundtracks arranged by the brilliant Yuki Kajiura, whose haunting melodies make the battle scenes even more epic.
Both series take on the "magical girl" genre with the approach that all-is-not-as-great-as-it-seems. While the girls in both series are granted extraordinary powers, the series' both deal with the similar themes of isolation, betrayal, and hopelessness while portraying the danger and constant threat of death that comes along with their powers.
Viewers will also see similarities between the characters in both series such as Natsuki and Homura and Shizuru and Mami.
Same person behind the music, both are Mahou Shoujo genre but with darker plot.

Both anime have the following similarities: female lead characters, slice of life, starts out happy and fun then takes a dark turn, involve character deaths, and magical girls.
If you enjoyed Mai-Hime, Madoka Magica is a perfect next anime.
Mai HiME are not 100% Magical Girl series since the only thing that transforms are weapons, not outfits.
1) However, we still have girls with powers fighting with monsters and among each other.
2) We have Nagi who is almost like Kyubei, he pushes girls to awakening and constantly keeps watching. He keeps secrets and doesn't give a complete explanation of what will happen if they'll eccept the powers.
3) Natsuki who is similar to Homura by being cold to others and not talking much to them but eventually opening up.
4) At first both series look quiet innocent but eventually they start to become darker and more tragic.

Both look at the darker side of being a girl with supernatural abilities.
Don't be fooled by the sugary promo art, both these shows have some tragic material.
Both are darker mahou shoujo where the girls must pay dearly for their powers. They are both also awesome.
Both feature dark twists on the magical girl genre. They also both have outstanding soundtracks and some of the dramatic songs even sound similar.
Both series appear to be innocent and fun when they first start it; however, as the story goes on, it all becomes a deconstruction to their own genres. You see a lot of character development in both, and you don't know who is on your side, or what people's true intentions are. The characters struggle in their own lonely tragedies, but it takes the strength of friendship to fight against the real battle. I had this whole in my heart, and sadness for the characters that compelled me to think of both of these anime.

Both are about a group of girls with special abilities, both become much more dark in process, and their protagonists both have great potential and at the same time are uncertain of what they must do and what they really want to do.

Both are deep and tragic masterpieces. Breaks your heart and makes you cry - big time.
Both are about girls with powers that fight monsters, and both may seem like nice and happy shows, but both aren't. Only note that Mai-HiME takes a lot more time to become dark, and the shows are dark in different ways.
Both have a dark story about girls and have alot of drama.
also the soundtrack is the one of the very best you can hear in your life.
not your typical slice of life school girl setting though and mcs are mostly girls
Both start of as initially lighthearted and charming magical girl stories, but however as time goes by, the story starts to become more noticebaly darker too.
