Unnatural occurrences force a pair of teenagers to experience the others culture and avoid a deadly threat.

Sakasama no Patema is basically a longer, more detailed Pale Cocoon with more action and a happier ending. Pale Cocoon, on the other hand, makes more sense scientifically and has the better song.

A boy discovers a floating girl who has a pendant. in Patema: the girl floats up in the sky in Laputa: the girl floats down from the sky

Both have a female lead who goes where they are told not to. Both start off with having to wear special suits. If you watch both you will see what I mean.

1) Story about people hiding in order to survive. 2) Great animation movies 3) Include two main characters (male+female)
report Recommended by guigeek
Very similar concept and both are sci fi romances where it is about the perspective of the world and how far you can reach into the sky.

Similar vibe at certain times. Both have beautiful background art and very fitting BGM. You get a kind of eerie feeling, but still a sense of wonder from both anime/movie. There is also the same sense of the 'unknown' and the viewers discover the mysteries of the world alongside the younger protagonists.

Same beautiful artwork, amazing setting and delicious scenery. Both have simplistic and overall basic plots. Both focus on some serious topic (war/prejudice). Both have romance between the main characters. Both are happy feel good anime.

2 Characters meet from 2 different worlds which both change each other as they grow together in a sci fi world with unnatural gravity.
report Recommended by Storm_Mortal
Both represent a dystopia genre. There are two societies within each anime with strict rules which every citizen should obey. But they weren't here from the beginning, they occures as a result of some sort a disaster. The information about those disasters and the worlds' structures themselves is strictly classified, and main characters, who knows nothing at the beginning, step by step reveal all the truth. Both general story lines begin when member of one society get in contact with member of another, which is primarily a taboo, even though in Shinsekai Yori one society dominates on another. Both stories are developing as those societies  read more

Directed by the same guy. Both are set in futuristic Sci-Fi settings dealing with What-If scenarios. Eve no Jikan deals with how you define being human, in regards to robots, while Sakasama no Patema looks at a scenario where there are two types of people that are affected by gravity differently and how they interact with each other. Both take a deeper look at how people "work" and interact with others. Neither should be missed!

Both have almost the same art and fluid animation. Both are romances which are involved in a sci-fi story. Both takes places in another world. The relationship between the main characters is dramatic and the girl in both series has problems.

Both have an underground man-made world and the above world that is considered to be a better place. Both have a dystopian feel and atmosphere.
report Recommended by ph0en1xl
Both have similar antagonists, deal with 2 separate societies of people that condemn each other, and have similar conclusions. Also, both are pretty upbeat and feel good to watch. They also have similar technologies and aesthetics.

• Both anime are writing and directed by same direction. • Both anime follow similar story structure where main girl is captured by an evil organization and her friends/lover tried to protect her.
report Recommended by ZXEAN
Both are sci fi dark fantasy movies where the young protagonists venture and investigate a mystery of a place far and unfamiliar to them that they had unintentionally encounter and also features fitting and immersive music as well as many emotional moments and many mysteries that will live you wondering. Both also features a antagonistic organization who is looking to captivate or exploit a young captive girl in their own ways and motivation.

The anguish of both protagonists in exploring the world, with the desire to know what lies beyond the horizon. Female protagonists who come from the other side of the world and need to return

- On the other side of what the main characters know, awaits a world they were never supposed to know about. - Both sets of characters are attempting to break free from the existing systems. - Both start off seeming wholesome enough, but gradually reveal their darker secrets.

These anime share several similarities, despite having different plots and settings. Both stories revolve around two characters from vastly different backgrounds who meet and ultimately change each other’s lives. In Josee to Tora to Sakana-tachi, Tsuneo meets Josee, a young woman with a physical disability who has rarely ventured outside her home. This encounter shifts their perspectives on life. In Sakasama no Patema, Patema meets Age, a young man from a literally opposite world, and their meeting helps them understand both the world and themselves better.

- Both are mostly rooted in a “normal” world, with the exception of one major supernatural feature (The gravity inversion in Patema, and Summer Ghost speaks for itself.) - Both are stand-alone stories and don’t require any prior watching to understand - Both are beautifully animated with many flying (or falling, lol) sequences - Both involve a subtle romantic subplot that doesn’t detract from the overall experience even if you don’t like romance in films - Both have some rather large plot twists in relation to the main supernatural feature.
report Recommended by Atsunome
- Both are centred around the mysteries of one particular supernatural occurrence. - Both are in a steampunk-esque setting, although Patema’s incorporates these features more frequently. - Both have a young, athletic, and somewhat rebellious female protagonist. - Both sets of main characters are working to stop the organisations which control their lives.
report Recommended by Atsunome
Both hints to the existence of parallel worlds.

-the protagonists take an interest in the girls and do their best to save them -the relationship between the protagonists are similar -There are secrets in the worlds of both movies -the endings are a bit confusing in both movies, but good endings - they handle different but unique plot and are interesting until the end

Both anime encompass: -The interaction of two different groups of people; those of the sea & land, and those of the underground & surface. -Minimum contact being kept between each other, although in Nagi no Asukara it is intentional. -Negative relations due to their past history. -Gorgeous animation and art. -The main characters seeking to restore the calamity which has been imposed upon them. I hope you found this recommendation helpful!

"Arve Rezzle: Mechanized Fairies" / "Arve Rezzle: Kikaijikake no Yousei-tachi" and "Patema Inverted" / "Sakasama no Patema" both involve a strange girl suddenly arriving in a normal guy's life and then immediately bringing on armed pursuers who wish to hunt them down by any means possible.

Similar concepts of verticality and prejudice. Similar male/female protagonist duo. (coming from opposing groups, one saves the other and they become close)

Patema Inverted is a lot like Freedom. Both of their plots can be summed up as; two human civilizations are separated from eachother after an apocalyptic event and pretend the other doesn't exist. Journeys between the two worlds, a photograph and an ambitious project that ended in disaster will have serious impact... The setup and feel is very similar. In Patema Inverted there are Agia and those that live underground. Agia is a police state disguising itself as a utopia where the characters there are drones except for a select few. The underground is dark but cosy. In Freedom, the technology superior civilization is the Moon, including Eden a  read more

Both anime use a very common premise - a mysterious girl suddenly appears in front of a young boy and shakes up his mundane life. They are not using the romantic slice of life setup to this premise, but rather a dramatic sci-fi setup. Typhoon Noruda is frequently critized for having an overly ambitious script by trying to squeeze a movie length plot into a short story. If you found this to be the case then Patema Inverted will give you better satisfaction.

This recommendation may belong to every Miyazaki's film, because of pretty same characters design and story narration. At the same time I would reccomend Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995), because of the equally drawn post-apocalyptic worlds.

Two characters living in two sides of the same world yet who ignore everything of each other's existence Their meeting will change everything

Both animes develop into fantastic worlds and arouse the same feeling when you see them. The protagonists are similar and are involved in similar stories to rescue who else they want.

Another tale of a young girl lost in a strange world with a more romantic twist and much more confusing plot.
report Recommended by Reldawin
Shows where the setting provides a calm but ominous sense of mystery. It was clearly a world quite similar to ours at one point before deviating into their current state. Both protagonists meet someone who it very different from themselves and their people, which prompts them to explore the world they thought they knew with fresh insight.

Although the stories aren`t really that similar, i think you`ll like the relationship between the main characters, both anime have the same feeling of feelings involved between the characters, although in Atri they come a bit later on in the story with the romance. But they`re quite similar, about 6/10 similaritty, but you get the same vibe from both of them.
