Makoto Shinkai is involved in both works so expect similar themes and style of writing. (he is director and writer of both films) In both films, there features a young main male protagonist who seemingly forms a romantic relationship with the female protagonist. The mood is calm with a lighthearted atmosphere. At the same time, they bond through connections. The visuals/artwork in both series is also absolutely stunning.

Whilst the settings are rather different, both tales share the thread of a love which, although pure, innocent and routed for throughout by the viewer, there remains the sword of Damocles constantly hanging overhead, threatening to sever that thread at any moment. Both are tear-jerking love stories, worthy of anyone's time.

This is absolute no brainer recommendation. If you watched Garden of Words and thought "man I wish this got a full series", this is the show for you. Both tackle age-gap romances and have beautiful visuals that feature a lot of rainy moods.

If you are looking for some romance than these movies will give unforgetable memories. + the art style will teleport your jaw into the stratosphere

Both are set around the premise of rain and the bonds and romances created from it, while they may be very different through the story, the overall theme of both is centred around the same ideology. Both animations and art styles are gorgeous as well. I believe both are a must watch.

This Movie touch on a lot of relevant subjects with a different perspective than many other with the same type of message. It might feel a bit long sometimes and drags on, but it were no big issue for me. Like Garden of words (Kotono no Niwa) it is about a generally common subject, but both has likeable characters with their understanable way of dealing with trouble. Although they do not have similar artstyle, they still have similar way of pushing a subject out.  read more

Age-gap. The two anime, Garden of Words and Higehiro are both age-gap anime that share a similarity in trying to ignite a flare within the younger to push forward onto said other in the relationship. Where we have Garden of Word tells a rather sincere story about a student and a teacher getting to know each other. Higehiro is the divergent factor in that it wishes to expand on its drama into territory making it more interesting than it seems on the surface. Whatever the matter both of these anime use students as a means to deepen the story in the life that constitutes a school  read more

Essentially the same thing, except this one is shorter and has mechs.

Both movies are short and can make some silly hearts cry, or at least, wish that lovers and childs could be together! Kotonoha no Niwa has better art, and soundtrack. So if you like rain, stay at home and enjoy a good history, this is perfect for you :D

Both of these films are simply beautiful both in artwork and in story. The premise behind both stories is different However I strongly urge any who enjoy not just characters but amazing scenery to complete the full experience. Both films are written so well both will leave you with a lasting impression far beyond the ending credits.

Both movies are about love that u never imagine, when a couple love each other what can happend.. and then.. What can they do if they lose a dream with someone they love..

Simple love stories in a realistic setting, developing only the few most relevant characters. Very digital backgrounds and similar character designs, both made by CoMix Wave Films.

If you liked Garden of Words for its: - Quiet and calm pacing - Rough traversal of relationships And wanted more: - Time for character developement - Characters involved in the main plot Then Sing Yesterday is for you. Although the art quality isn't as godly as Garden of Words, what it lacks in art-style it makes up for in its situational-event building.

Makoto Shinkai is involved in both films so expect some similar themes, stunning visuals, and character relationships spawned from chance encounter through interactions. There is a melody of calm music present in both films that is elegant and serene. Then, there's the romance that is also a theme in both films. There is also a dramatic tone in both films that gets emotional and can be memorable.

Similarities: Both animes have a good plot Shy characters with great personalities
report Recommended by Yuukinaa
Both animes deal with a romantic relationship between a school boy and her teacher. In Domestic Kanojo this relationship is taken much more forward while in Kotonoha no Niwa it is presented in a more poetic way. Also, Domestic Kanojo has another female protagonist and more plot points.

- Both have protagonists with what could be considered a ‘problem’ (drinking addiction and insomnia respectively). - Both are relatively chill stories focused mainly on romance and the characters getting to understand each other. - Both have incredible visuals regarding nature.

Hear me out. Both animes the protagonists meet each other in one place at a specific time only. Both somewhat romantic Both short and sweet!

both are wholesome anime giving you the serene beauty of japan .

Both stories are about a forbidden love between a student and a teacher in other words between an adult and a minor so if you didn’t see any problem with the prelude of fruits basket, you will enjoy kotonoha as well. Teachers genders are swapped in both movies which allows you to look at this controversial storyline choice from different perspectives.

The Garden of Words is similar theme, which is romance and drama, with my happy marriage. This anime and my happy marriage characters show their emotions with non verbal communication technique. Non-verbal communication show emotions deeper than verbal communication. This way is more realistic and convincing.

Both short films featuring beautiful artwork and poetic romance.

Age-gap. The age gap relationship is one that may cause a few issues. However, the stories Koikimo and Garden of Words aren't entirely bad in what they do and are still self-aware in their actual premise. With the male lead going forward to build something of a deep relationship with the female lead. Garden of Words is a story of two who meet, ending up on the side of love despite their differences. Koikimo is the same, but it recognises the issues more so that it is actually condemned to an extent. For what are romance anime at the end of the day, I'd say both hit  read more

A daily animation with simple design characters. Similar vibe aftertaste

Both are romances where the main character has a connection with sewing and textiles and will make a garment for someone they likes

Both have really good plots Both have that relatable moments in life Both made a better love story in a little more than an hour than Twilight did in 4 books Both are great movies Both movies slaps you so hard about reality that sometimes you don't want to ever go outside of your room anymore Both made me cried in the end (manly tears)

Without giving too much info both stories have a similar concept of a young male interacting with an older woman. As the story progresses, they start to be drawn towards each other. The difference is in "Onegai Teacher" the MC gets married early on in the story, while "Kotonoha no Niwa" is more subtle.

Makoto Shinkai plays the role of the director for both Hoshi no Koe and Kotonoha no Niwa. Thus, expect similar themes and values for both movies. Among other factors though, both movies has themes of romance. The main female character also meets a main male protagonist from both movies and they form a strange relationship. The artwork from both movies are glorious and elegant given Shinkai's involvement.

I think both had a similar feeling too it, as well as a good art.

When I watched this, I got a feeling "oh you doing that again hah?" He used the same rambling narration theme, which gives a feeling like you reading a novel more than watching an anime. Some people might not like it, since it's hard to understand at some points.

Well, aside from the obvious fact that both are movies, they share a somewhat similar atmosphere. Both give off a very "natural" feel for lack of a better word. The art in both is incredibly beautiful, and both feature a somewhat taboo yet innocent relationship. The soundtracks are also equally gorgeous.
report Recommended by PBnSpots
Both anime follow a similar story where the boy is in a kind of near the girl, but both are silent and there is a silent bond between them and both have an end with a positive hint.

Both have romance and are movies, cute to watch only tha tthe endings and the time settings are different

Both anime are: * Movie * Begining of the romance in a rainy day * Both characters don't know each other before they met in a rainy day * Beautiful romance * The endings are similars Differences: * Kotonoha... is set in our time while Harukanaru... is set in a past era * Kotonoha... could be true 'cos has real ambience while Harukanaru... has a bit of fantasy

Similarities in: -Music/Soundtrack -Characters -Pacing -Emotions/Character development Days with My Stepsister and The Garden of Words both have protagonists who are able to “alleviate the worries hidden in their hearts just by being with each other.” Days with My Stepsister is unassumingly deep, slow, lush, and emotional- just as The Garden of Words is. The soundtrack for both is gorgeous and striking! You’ll notice great foley sound effects in both- like the sound of a mug moving against the palm of MC’s hand, or echoing voices as the MC’s are walking under and underpass.

Few anime focus on the lives of adult women and the difficulties of their relationships in a realistic manner. Otona Joshi no Anime Time and The Garden of Words are animated short stories that portray the lives of five women and how they deal with their personal issues. I count these two titles among the few anime shorts that are worth watching. Their stories would stand up as a live-action short film.

Both could be inferred to be dealing with a foot fetish.

Similarity : + In both anime Male MC (Akizuki Takao & Nandaba Naota) fall in love with a woman older than him age (Yukino Yukari & Haruhara Haruko) + The main story almost same in some point : Female MC need help from Male MC to solve her problems + Without giving you spoiler :THE ENDING ALSO SAME especially about status of their relationship Different : + FLCL animation style is......... how i can say.......... mind-fu**king-blow-your-mind or in simple word unusual making some people would be difficult to adapt, while Kotonoha no Niwa animation style is beautiful & very detailed + Kotonoha no Niwa story is about normal daily live,  read more

the animation.art in both shows gave me the same "vibe" which made the show as a whole that much more enjoyable. also the romance was enjoyable too.

They're both realistic love stories that involve highschoolers and craftmanship with nice art. Of course Ghibli's art is different and older than Shinkai's, but the atmosphere is kind of alike.
report Recommended by EratiK
Both movies revolve around the subject of escapism, protagonists' desire of getting away from reality (although shown in completely different ways), and the hardships of those who try to help them. If you enjoyed Kotonoha no Niwa and would like to watch a bittersweet drama, try Aura.
