Whilst the settings are rather different, both tales share the thread of a love which, although pure, innocent and routed for throughout by the viewer, there remains the sword of Damocles constantly hanging overhead, threatening to sever that thread at any moment.
Both are tear-jerking love stories, worthy of anyone's time.

Anime movies that tell tales of love stories. In both movies the male and female main characters have to overcome the large age gap between them.

Wonderful artwork, wonderful pace.
The overarching theme being a bittersweet brand of love.
The empathy I feel for the characters is quite intense in both cases.

If you like a warm-hearted love story with an almost melancholic ending, here you go.
Both stories take you through a journey of two individuals who just happen to find each other and bond overtime. They know so much and so little about each other but slowly discover their love as the story progresses.
Both relationships are a taboo. Male characters seem really withdrawn and have a mental/emotional challenge that they learn to accept. The female characters are both mature (in their own sense).
The only real difference are in the setting. One has fantasy/spiritual while the other is slice-of-life and realistic. Both movies left me with a

These two films both feature beautiful animation and a romance that develops from a chance meeting, though while Kotonoha no Niwa has a realistic setting, Hotarubi no Mori e has supernatural elements present.

Both Kotonoha no Niwa and Hotarubi no Mori e have that garden background, where everything seems lighter and somehow full of pure spirit and harmony. These movies also have as principal charecters a girl and a boy who "slowly" fall in love. They are actually 45min each, too!
Both are about an innocent love, and both have a similar kind of hopeful feeling. Also, they're around 45 minutes long and take their time for the scenes.
Both have a similar story.
One is a story of two lovers who cant touch or have any kind of physical contact with each other.
The other is a love story between a woman and a student. There is a huge difference in their ages.
Both are movies which have a barrier between two lovers.

Both are 45 minutes long and focus on the relationship between two people. The settings, however is different and Kotonoha no Niwa doesn't have a supernatural element, where Hotarubi no Mori e does

They're both short movies with a similar calming atmosphere, that revolve around a boy that falls in love with a girl, but there is some kind of gap between them.
Hotarubi no Mori e has a more supernatural setting, while The Garden of Worlds uses a realistic setting.

Both are nice, short and bittersweet romance stories that focus on two characters falling in love, but having something stopping them from actually being together.
both are pretty short movies, (they're around 45 mins), both of them are pretty sad and have a romance kind of theme and are in general quite good.
