First of all both of the mangas might seem childish but they contain a lot of darker themes. Anyway both of them contain other similarities like - > Kids from some kind of special orphanage. > Unique Adventure in unknown mysterious places. (Abyss - Made in Abyss, Promised land - Yakusoku no Neverland) > Intelligent and smart kids. > Demon-like and mysterious creatures. > Survival themes. So if you like Yakusoku no Neverland, you will like Made in Abyss too.

I love series with grand adventures and in-depth story telling and in universe history. Both of these series have these in strides, as well as very well realized characters.

Both of them are amazing adventure series with endlessly imaginative settings. Both of them have young and naive main characters that undergo a lot of development and go through a lot of hardships on their adventure, learning things the hard way. Both of them explore the idea of downwards vertical exploration, in Made in Abyss's case, it is the main driving force behind the story and with Hunter x Hunter it is part of one of the challenges from the first arc of the manga. Both of them have complex themes and dark aspects to them. Both of them aren't afraid to show how cruel the world can be. Both  read more

A boy and a girl on a quest of discovery go down a mysterious, seemingly endless pit to find out what's at the bottom, suffer a certain amount of body harm, and make (sometimes lose) some friends along the way. Cyborgs, alien technology, emotional gut-punches, and various forms of body modification may or may not be involved.

Both works have the same author, the same kind of art, the same kind of cruel and mysterious but beautiful world and the same feelings.

There are no other series I've ever read that come close to making you feel utter DESPAIR. You're not the characters, but you feel like you are sharing a part of their experience and are emotionally scarred b/c of it. They are both the visual realization of a Lovecraftian nightmare. No one is safe, no one is spared. The only things that matter are Desire and Sacrifice as they lead to Power. Sacrificing your Sanity, and Sacrificing your Humanity. I'm a complete POS person. If it can cause me to have FEELZ you know you have something special. 10/10 Not for the faint of heart and DEFINITELY  read more

Main theme is survival and exploration Characters hunt and find new things to eat and survive

Both stories are in a fantasy setting that follow a group of children and their difficult adventures. "+Anima" is set in a world where children can mysteriously gain animal traits and powers, which causes them to be persecuted by normal humans. The story focuses on Cooro, Husky, Senri, and Nana; who meet others like themselves and search for a place where they can be accepted, feel safe and live happily. "Made in Abyss" is set in a world where a giant abyss is the only place in the world that hasn't been fully charted, and attempting to will likely cost your life. The story focuses on  read more

Both are fantasy/adventure manga that feature a group of heroes that delve deep into a mysterious place (the Abyss and the dungeon) to find a lost relative. The protagonists of both are oddballs with an almost disturbing fascination/reverence of their respective frontiers, and both share an enthusiasm for cooking/eating monsters killed there. In both manga the party is joined by a resident of the strange land who is an expert in survival there. In both manga the characters often make light of dire circumstances. The tone of Dungeon Meshi is much lighter, it being a comedy manga that focuses on cooking,  read more

Both manga are darker, and get darker the further you get into the manga.

Both works are journeys. The protagonists did not go on their adventures because they needed, or in face of an imminent danger: they simply wanted to do it. In their journeys, they find other people, they learn, each step at a time as they draw closer to their objectives, and in this, they find meaning. Also, both of them are very well written with interesting worlds and concepts, and pass beautifully emotional messages.

Both have similar art styles and robots trying to keep their identity a secret. They make you say "Wut" and make you want to keep reading. They are about very different things, but are both super enjoyable.

Both series have a tendency of having the main characters explore areas of gargantuan magnitude and unknownness both comprising of mystery and dangerous creatures there are characters with similar abilities to be able to fire lasers that blow through everything as well

both manga depict characters adventuring into a dangerous lands which is clouded in mystery and the unknown, with environments which produce dangerous forces to antagonize the main protagonists

Another mystery manga with good world building where kids fight for their lives.

Frighteningly determined young girls with pigtails decide to venture further into an unquantifiable supernatural realm than anyone has ever done before. World End Solte leans a little more to the quirky side, while Made in Abyss tends to get pretty disturbing.

I am unsure of how to make this recommendation without sounding like—Lord forgive me—a "psychopath", but in some way, due to the graphic subject matter of these series and the involvement of squishable faces, I have a feeling that fans of one series will probably take a liking to the other. That is to say, if you like horrifying imagery juxtaposed with cute characters, this rec is for you.

Both set in a place still yet to be fully explored with unique inhabitants. A world of adventure and danger awaits our characters as we follow them in their journey.

Dark fantasy with very violent and brutal scenes but still interesting story and worlbuilding.

Both of them have incredibly imaginative settings, with stunning artwork that can be endlessly creative. Both of them have a vast amount of fantastical creatures (animals, bugs, plants, etc.) Both of them have main characters that undergo a lot of development on their adventure and deal with a lot of hardships.

Its very hard seeing cute innocent children being the vocal point when it comes to fighting insanely powerful ugly monsters, but both of these manga's do just that. The children in both stories show with the right motivations anything can be achieved when it seems hopeless with no end insight. The two narratives show an amazing heartwarming and emotional ride between the children as they set out to take on what seems impossible.

Similar feelings of big adventure and survival. The characters meet and interact with different species (some are friendly, some others are dangerous). Beautiful art and overall less grim and violent than Made in Abyss though.

A fresh and genuine adventure story. The thematic settings and the ambience may be opposites - it's high in the sky for the lighter Asebi to Sora and down in the abyssal depths for the darker Made in Abyss, but the feel of genuine adventure is present in these two titles. The element of danger is an ever present companion for the characters but the intrepid spirit of adventure is also there to drive them onward. Perhaps coincidentally, the young protagonists in these two titles also have a reliable robotic humanoid of the opposite sex as their respective partners on their journeys. It's remarkable how these two  read more

Both manga have extensive world building. Exotic creatures, magical items , plants etc .. Most similar aspect would be they both have under ground dungeon which have detailed explanation. So they are similar in world building regards . ----- Differences - Made in Abyss focus a lot on complex story and thriller while 'Elf to Shuryoushi no Item Koubou' focus more on whole story and sweet innocent romance.

Both of them are amazing adventure series the fantasy and romance theme is what propels it forward

Both are adventure centered fantasy stories. By the end of the first chapter establishes the setting and introduces the character and her goal. Both main characters want to find their parent(s), so they take up their parents' work at a young age. Both have exciting and dark undertones to them. If you are not comfortable seeing children suffer, do no read either.
reportRecommended by JJBarr
Both titles deals with children (in Ashizuri's case, child) making their way through the ordeals of a weird but magnificent world, with distinct and beautiful art styles, and flirting with heavy themes.
reportRecommended by eldritch
A boy and a girl travel treacherous landscapes together to find a missing person, fighting off bizarre creatures using a mysterious raygun. Body horror, violence, gore, and underage nudity coincide with an uncharacteristically cutesy art style. Probably not the best book to read on the commute unless you enjoy the weird looks and an occasional sigh of disapproval.
reportRecommended by moozooh
Similar in that they both have children in very bad situations were they have to think of how to escape/overcome the situation.

These two manga are fantastic entries in the "human misery" genre, featuring children undergoing horrendous physically and mentally demanding tasks in a fantasy-type world. Both have cute art styles and characters despite this.
reportRecommended by 20_EYES
- Both have dark plot on loneliness and depressive backstories - Animal-human hybrid like characters - Ominous art styles, both different but share detailed art
