THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.

Yup, I think this is an important episode due to Mu finding out the origins of the war from many years ago.

And for Echo, he's really going to need all the help he can get in this show. Those trio of girls are definitely a group to watch out for. I'm also quite curious about what sort of important role Mu will play in this timeline though.

Yay another episode, hopefully we get some answers as to what happened at the end of last ep

We get some interesting backstory about the earless and noise. We also get introduced to two really cool new characters. “Jimi” is a clear Hendrix reference, respext

“Mu, I want to see the world with you” awwwww I ship them so hard

True Crimson v AC30 was pretty dope

Overall nice episode, things are starting to come together and we’ve got a clear goal to work towards. Can’t wait to see where it goes from here. One of my fave shows of the season with some old school Jetix vibes

Continuing the same level of average and trope-y. Lmao at the random english tho.

Also: "Hey it's me guy who hasn't left his room in 4 years. What do you mean there's a random 15 year old boy here? Well shit, better go introduce myself!"

And: "Here is my deeply personal story about how I will not ride as a player anyone. You want to have a sparring match? Hell yeah I'm down!"

Okay, maybe I can forgive the second one because they were not going out in the field for real.

Still don't get the metaphor/reference in this anime. Are they mention classic rock songs? Are players resemble real-life legendary musician? This show is just like Cell at Work but instead of cell, we're looking at electric parts of amplifier.

The first two episodes were ok-ish I would say. The first one was a decent set up, the second was a bit more interesting with the illusions and stuff. This one though, very weak. A lot of exposition. History in a fictional world is important, but this episode just told a tiny bit of history trivia about some very uninteresting and not special event that happened long ago. The dialogue is kind of bad also, probably not helped by Mu. So far, the boy has some personality and is consistent (yes, his personality is just being an enthusiastic wimp, but at least there is something). Mu on the other hand? The most boring tsundere, I guess. The developement of her personality boils down to the amnesia card. Sure, there is a hint of a conflict inside her, but the set up wasn't good enough, so the whole thing felt forced. I guess this is why this show now has like a 6.2 overall score as I'm writing this. I personally lean on the 6 side after this episode.

Also, the naming of the mecha was lame and made no sense. The special move was meh. I get it that some shows have things like this, but a good show make these moves special in some way. An excelent show makes the special moves such that I am excited when I see them finally coming up. This show has that kind of approach on special moves that makes me roll my eyes. (It seems like a show for 5 year olds in this regard.)

Finally, for a show called Listeners, the soundrack is quite unremarkable. I personally can't remember one moment when the music piqued my interest.

Conclusion: The creators came up with a premise, exposed it in the first episode, and then they didn't know what to do next so they just did something. I think that episode 4 would be decisive. If it manages to feel more uneventful and unnecessary than this one I will simply drop it.

Looks like the first two episodes were more to set up what the world is like, and a basic premise. Before throwing a story at us in this episode, which is good to see.

Though, honestly didn't expect giant fighting music players lol. But it's still fun to see, cannot wait to see what who they meet further along.

I couldn't agree more. Why even bother referencing really great bands and then having the actual music suck so bad? They're barely even trying to rip off the bands they mention (too bad because that would improve the music substantially if they just blatantly copied stuff).

I'm really quite surprised that this show got made. It doesn't have a built-in audience from a LN or manga, and there's not enough pandering to fans of older rock bands to get that crowd. A lot of younger people won't even know a lot of the bands mentioned so far.

This is at best a 5 for me so far. And a real disappointment.

Continue reading at your own risk: contains spoilers!

Idk if the story is slow or bland, but to me, the premise is still interesting enough to keep watching.

Lots of English text to refer to old rock songs, but they don't really stand out. At least not at JoJo levels. And I wonder if it is enough to keep teenagers hooked to the show.

Naming the macha after a famous VOX AC30? Mmmh... Only important thing is that the hotter the amp is, the better is sounds. For more info on it, see https://reverb.com/news/tips-and-tricks-for-getting-the-most-out-of-your-vox-ac30. Ow, we already saw the 2 input modes of the amp: normal and brilliant.

Here's list of users of the VOX AC30, for those interested: http://www.c3605.de/VOX/info-pool/bands-and-musicians-plying-an-ac30/

And teen spirit with that background, so Nirvana's next.

Outside of that this anime is just not good.

Overall impression: Perfectly serviceable. Nothing exciting. Really that's kinda the shame of this anime, I've seen shows with more problems, but it just kinda is missing that spark that makes it really worth sticking with. I've stayed here because unlike some of the other shows this season it never had a moment that made me go "yeah, this isn't working for me", but I'd struggle to say I'm really invested, I feel like I'm here hoping it'll connect and it's just not quite doing so.

Oh, but the preview for the next episode makes it a lot easier to decide whether I want to continue. Why the fuck would you take a setting like this and have a high school episode, even if it's just one episode (presumably)? I'm reminded of when Seraph of the End had the high school in the post-apocalypse for some fucking reason.

I don't know why i didn't notice until this episode but the soundtrack in this series is pretty great, i'm loving the guitar tracks in the background in this episode. Probably one of the reasons i'm sticking around so far.

I can't say i'm any more invested in the characters, and the plot and action in general are still pretty bland. This was easily my favorite episode so far, and the glimpse of the player vs player fights that could happen in the future have me more excited than anything with the earless. I really don't feel like they made the earless menacing enough to be the "enemy of humanity" that they're made out to be.

Nothing amazing but the Mecha action was alright. I feel slightly bias to this series as I am a musician and a sucker for references, but this show still comes across as lackluster. Apart from the musical references I'm not sure what else I'm expecting to get out of this series, the plot is muddy and the characters forgettable. Had high hopes for the setting but it's quite one-note for now. Looks like the next episode will be a change of pace though!

Wow I hate the dialogue. It was said earlier but I agree it's an absolute slog to sit through.
Why did we have to stuck with the most uninteresting characters when all the other players at least look a bit unique in comparison.
I must missed the part where Mu got so attached to Echo that now she's all sad about losing him.

I'm wondering why Jimi is called Jimi. That word means boring and plain in Japanese.

They added baby fat in an adult man's cheeks. That was a terrible design choice.

It's just a reference to a rock legend called Jimi Hendrix. That being said, I can see how fans of classic rock get hyped at all the references this show throws at you, but for the non-fans they are just gonna seem random, like all the engrish in this episode.

Next episode is gonna be school life. A fitting Nirvana title if you ask me!

What an exciting episode! An unexpected combatant drives away the witches and our heroes get some much-needed upgrades for their robot. We also get some insight about what happened during the war, but I guess we have yet to learn the full story. Overall, this was a fun episode for what is shaping up to be a fun show. I'm really liking the direction the show is taking and I can't wait to see what happens next.

I like Kevin and Ms. Bilin, they were nice characters to have.

It's nice that we have direction now, though I'm hoping we actually get to see more about the world and stuff, because at the moment it feels kind of empty.

I liked that fight at the end, and I'm glad our heroes lost, since we can't be too op right now.

Seriously Echo, I like everyone but you at this point. You're watching footage of Miu in mortal danger, and your reaction is "awesome" or something like that. You're positive vibes are bringing down man, try to be more sensitive.

Liked the scene in the open sky, and everything else about this episode, except for Echo being insensitive of course

It's a reference to an album by Nico, a former member of the Velvet Underground. It's also the name of a film by Andy Warhol, but considering that all references are about rock music, I'm pretty sure it's the former.

The first good episode so far. I liked that they focused more on the chars and the background. Though I guess next episodes will be a "x of the week format". x = one of the guys that participated in that old "Fest" where something went wrong. Getting infos about the Jimi Stonefree guy (maybe father of Mu?).

Engrish is cool but didn't feel funny and didn't really fit here.

In the past episodes I did not recognize the reference to "Einstsürzende Neubauten". Here Bilin (Billy) and Kevin Valentine referred to real people.

Also the Engrish lines seem to be from some lyrics (or album name and stuff like that) from "My Bloody Valentine". ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Bloody_Valentine_(band) )

Edit: Jimi Stonefree from "Jimi Henddrix" of course. Did not know about the "Stone Free" but Jimi Hendrix is popular and the name I recognized so I had to google it in combination with Stonefree.

I believe it should have been 'Feed Me With Your Kiss', another reference to a song by My Bloody Valentine.

Kevin and Bilin Valentine were designed based on Kevin Shields and Bilinda Butcher of My Bloody Valentine. Their mecha, Sue, is after another MBV's song Sueisfine. Their techniques like "I Can See It (But I Can't Feel It)" are also based on MBV's songs. The title card for this episode is a tribute to the cover of MBV's 'Loveless'.

Dunno, as a rock fan, I'm loving this anime so far. It's just so cool looking at the designs inspired by musicians and songs that I love.

The creators love musicians? Yes, that's the whole point! They want to make something out of the things they love!

Young anime fans do not know them? Well, if they're interested, then they can try find and learn about the musicians! That would be great instead of just being spoonfed things they already know anyway.

Next episode should be interesting too.
Freak Scene Academy must be after a song by Sonic Youth. Kim must be inspired by Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon. The title and the title card are inspired by Nirvana. The character Hole is probably inspired by Hole.

The world-building is slowly getting better: the epilogue to the prologue about the Players and the Earless, more explained this episode.

The powers that are the reminiscent inspiration of music in real life (with creator Jin onboard), it can't just be mere coincidience and is a major part of this show, which is slwoly starting to grow on me.

Saved by the Valentines, former Grand Master Bilin and assistant Kevin, Echo and Mu settles in. And finally naming his amp AC30, Echo reaffirms his passion with Mu to go forth.

The mecha battle was kinda OK though, though it seems to hammer the thought of a musical mecha battle (which can go both ways), plus that cringey Engrish.

This show made me realize there's more than meets the eye, and willing to continue onward.

This episode seemed an important one- we learnt about some history of this world and why the mayor of liverchester hated players so much. We also met two new characters that are really interesting and unique, both rich in personality and backstory. What's also good is how the two main characters had a bit of conflict, but managed to overcome it maturely and work together!

Won't drop it yet, the real problem is that the series isn't doing anything to entertain nor interest the viewer in into continuing the series. The animation is lucklaster at best (and horrible at worst), human relationships in the series are totally uninteresting and, to make the bad worse, the OST is generic (and the anime is teoretically about music lmao.

Glad, i'm not the only one noticed that it felt very fast... Usually there is a small pause, little delay when a character finishes his line, but in this episode, there was no pause, they just spoke right after each other. Very very weird, i don't think i've ever seen this.

You are not alone on your take on references, it's just empty words to me. I love looove music, but i dont really care about their composers and history (i'm a terrible person -_-)

This is... pretty bad.
Won't drop it yet, the real problem is that the series isn't doing anything to entertain nor interest the viewer in into continuing the series. The animation is lucklaster at best (and horrible at worst), human relationships in the series are totally uninteresting and, to make the bad worse, the OST is generic (and the anime is teoretically about music lmao.
also, the engrish was cringe as f*ck

imagine being mentally retarded like this person and spittling peepeepoopoo wherever you walk
