Up until the final thirty minuets I was thinking the movie was just so-so, but then after that it just bowled me over. The ending was incredible.

Agree with the first part, but especially the ending left me like "come on....". For instance, what are the Ohms to be able to resurrect Nausicaä? Anyway, I never really liked the ending of any Miyazaki films (except, maybe, Spirited Away) - although his films are great otherwise.

However parts of the soundtrack seemed a little old, even for this movie.

Agreed, although I loved the openig. It's just very few action scenes that have a bad sounding, unfitting or abruptly starting soundtrack - it's not too bad after all.

What really blew me away was the art, it almost looked no worse than later Ghibli movies (yeah I know Ghibli has been founded in 1985..), and Nausicaa looks very similar to Tehanu from Gedo Senki, somehow.

Story is basically very good, the message is clear, but it suffers from the very same problems as Princess Mononoke. Both their main characters (Nausicaa, Ashitaka) seem to think and act perfectly correctly almost all the time and therefore don't even feel like actual characters. They have too little depth, both of them.

Not Miyazaki's greatest production but good nonetheless. In keeping with Ghibli tradition, there were environmentalist and feminist themes as well as a lot of aircraft which I've always liked seeing in their works.

one of the most disappointing movies I've seen in a long time. great visuals regarding the insects and so on, but beside that I feel like I really wasted my time. It also took me around 4 attempts to finally finish it.
I assume the manga is (a lot) better - will definitely read it someday.
movie gets a 6/10 for me, I did like the scene with the baby ohm but other than that.... nope

It was a nice movie but I don't see how it's a masterpiece. There was very little character development and I felt almost no tension during except when the village was about to be stampeded. Still it was a nice story and worth watching. The music was well done. 7/10

Anything following in Miyazaki's vision's footsteps will automatically be underwhelming I guess, no matter what medium.

This movie made me cry, but Miyazaki almost always makes me cry. It's just the way his vision weaves and unfolds...it's so beautiful and intricate. I also love how Miyazaki brings how humans are pollutants and need to respect nature more, which I think a lot of people should become aware of.

One flaw I noticed in Nausicaa was the fact that said Nausicaa had NO FLAWS. It always irks me when characters are "perfect" and I felt that a lot while watching this. Nevertheless, amazing.

This movie was incredible and is easily my favourite Miyazaki movie as well.

Also, Id bet my left testicle that that steaming "Giant" crawling over the hilltop was Hajime Isayamas inspiration for the "giant titan" in shingeki no kyojin and that first moment, where it grabs and peeks over the wall. Nah kidding, maybe I wouldnt go that far, but I still think its true XD.

What can I say, this movie is one of the first Miyazaki movies for me and I still vividly remember some really powerful moments in this movie after a long time. For me it is a masterpiece because of how relatable the protagonist of the movie is and the message of preserving each and every life. I admire her from the very beginning, I could empathise with the growing up and the journey she has to partake and have been rooting for her the whole time, which not a lot of the animes nowadays can make me feel. Sure there are some flaws here and there especially with some characters and strange, not-necessarily-logical situations, but the emotions I have felt throughout and the build up towards that ending drowns me in my own tears every single time ><

Love it, this timeless movie touches my heart. 10/10

Oh wow, would you look at that. The baby Ohm's blood just happened to stain Nausicaä's pink dress into a dark blue colour.

Overall, that was a very underwhelming film. It was really only slightly more engaging than "Tales from Earthsea".

I feel like I wasted an couple hours in a way. I have absolutely no feeling toward the movie; in fact, I was having a hard time focusing because I didn't see the point. The theme seems to be that we shouldn't pollute, but the way this movie tried to convey it is just... I don't know. It was surreal, and I don't mean that as a compliment.

Okay. How to analyze this... I'll just think out loud here, since nobody else in this thread has bothered to talk about the movie in-depth.

First, the easy part: The music was nice and the art was fantastic considering this was made in '84. I thought, "It's neat seeing old-timey anime art like this in high definition" without realizing it actually was old-timey anime art. Haha. What nitpicks I had with it are overrode now that I realize its age. Good stuff.

Next is the main part. The characters were flat, although I don't think that's a negative in this case since the story wasn't about the characters so much as it was the theme. We need to talk about the story a bit to examine the theme, though:

Earth has been polluted by people of yesteryear. Nature is trying to reverse this pollution through forests that filter out the pollution, and it defends these forests fiercely. However, this would eventually kill off all humans since the entirety of earth is polluted. Humanity, which obviously wishes to survive, seeks for a way to destroy the forests that threaten its existence.

Enter Nasusicaä. She seeks to make peace with nature via coexistence. As the movie shows over and over, nature doesn't seek to harm humans who don't harm it. Okay. We have our theme of "don't hurt nature and it won't hurt you". The warring humans are the bad guys because they're trying to destroy the earth, and the fighting itself could also be making reference to how much destruction wars cause. However, the narrative elevates nature's existence to the same level of importance as humanity's survival, or even to greater importance. Here's the problem:

Why is the earth's "purity" more important than human lives? And what has humanity done that polluted the earth so badly in the first place? I don't have a problem with nature or the preservation of it (within reason). The movie doesn't bother to give a driving reason or argument that leads to its conclusion, though. I would even analogize it to the claims of global warming a couple years back; it was constantly being preached as something happening thanks to human pollution (and thus portrayed as bad), yet no conclusive evidence was ever given for it being humanity's fault. Regardless of your feelings on global warming, this movie felt identical from that perspective: It never gave me a reason to believe what it wanted me to believe. The nagging question in the back of my mind is why?, and there is simply no answer provided. The theme isn't actually explored or given substance in a way that can relate to real life; it's just there, existing. This is what I believe led to my lack of focus and the surreal feeling I got from the movie.

I find the lack of theme exploration a bit disturbing, to be honest. I've never seen a story with a distinct, emphasized theme that was completely static. There was no metaphorical dialogue. It was a conclusion without any backing. In other words, this movie was a whole lot of nothing. Don't be fooled by the smoke and mirrors, people.

How on earth (pun) am I supposed to rate "nothing"? I honestly do not know. Do I rate it a 3 for failing to realize its goal? Or did it realize its goal? Maybe the goal itself was flawed. Can you call a work of fiction's goal flawed? Agh. >.<;

This movie is interesting in a meta sense, but it is very taxing on the way I rate.

lol, I was thinking the same thing.

I enjoyed the movie. I really liked the setting. However, the biggest issue for me was probably Nausicaa herself, since she seemed to be TOO perfect. She was a princess, had a perfect personality, could understand animals, fly perfectly, was very intelligent, always knew what to do, everybody loved her, legends alluded to her, etc. Point being, I'm not a fan of Mary Sues. However, I did enjoy all of the other characters and found them to be much more interesting.

I loved the giant scene.

Well there it is, my first ever Miyazaki film & it was . . . okay. A few things I don't entirely get was why Nausicaa's clothes turned blue at the end. Like, I get that she was the savior of legend that was apparent from just about the get-go but she was wearing red-ish/pink clothes pretty much until the last scene. Actually, thanks to google I've read that it was apparently dyed with the Ohm's blood. Okay, that's not exactly how that works but artistic license & what not.

Anyway, the most interesting thing about the film in my opinion was seeing Ohm for the first time, given that they inspired the Kurta from Hunter x Hunter. Odd to think how these insects were able to heavily influence my favorite show. Back to the movie though, it was a good enjoyable film, with a good OST (though honestly, it never really felt appropriate during some of the action sequences, fantastic score but it didn't mesh perfectly for me) & Patrick Stewart in the dub. The characters were mostly good though lacked much development & yeah, Nausicaa was a mary sue & Asbel certainly never acted like someone who just lost his twin sister but regardless, I didn't dislike the cast. & being this is the earliest anime I've seen, that I know of at least, I can't say how well the animation is for 1984 but I am impressed with it & it is probably stronger or just as strong as the few pieces of animation I've seen from the late 80's of anime. I can talk longer but the movie doesn't really hit me too strong either or to express my views so I'll just end off with a 7/10.

This is a God tier anime to me. From the opening scenes it just grabs you and you can really feel the stakes throughout. The story is layered without being overly complex. The atmosphere is captivating, helped no end by the otherwordly designs, sound effects and music, bordering on psychedelic in some scenes. Action is amazing.

For those who haven't seen the sub: worth mentioning how great is is when Nausicaa's going on a killing spree after her father is killed. I don't think Western voice actors can really compare with things like that.

One thing I didn't remember about it were the numerous upskirt-no-panty shots !

I've just rewatched it and I wish I could give it an 11. I basically can't give any other anime I've seen so far a 10 without feeling that it doesn't give Nausicaa justice. Sometimes, I watch a film or series that makes me think 'Wow, this is amazing', but inside, I feel nothing other than the sense of enjoyment from a good piece of entertainment. Nausicaa is so much more to me. It makes me feel emotions stronger than anything I can normally experience. There is something about this story - how everything seems to lead to despair and doom of all these people, yet finally, unexpectedly (well, at least for them) they're saved. When they rejoice, I can't help it but feel as moved as if I were with them.

It's a cathartic experience for me. This is why I can't put almost anything on par with this. The only films I've seen that can compare on this level were Mononoke Hime (have to hand it to Miyazaki, he's a goddamn visionnaire), Braveheart and maybe Shawshank Redemption. No TV series so far have affected me this much.

Tbh I would have preferred if she had died.

Anyway, amazing film. I can't tell you how much I loved the insect designs, especially those large ones. As expected from Ghibli, they put in so much love on those details. There were scenes that I disliked a bit so I'll give this film a 8/10.

The setting is like one of those old fantasy video games you play. Just an amazing world created. The music as well. I feel like a kid watching.

I have questions though.

How is that princess from the military faction able to give orders to the giant? or was she just talking to no one and the beast just happened to fire? therefore looked like it followed her.

Does those insects have the ability to read a person's memory? What else do they possess? Can they understand those memories? Are they intelligent, sentient beings?

About the spores that grew in the valley. Should they not be safe? as the sustenance they get are from a pure source.

I'll comeback to this thread in the future. Hopefully one of you good fellows can take the time to help. Thank you in advance.

Again, great film.

SHEE-AAAAA LEH-BOOOF!

Yeah, I watched the English dub; Alison Lohman and Shia LaBeouf's performances were a bit iffy, but overall it was pretty good. Fire Lord Ozai wasn't half bad as Mayor, either.

The movie itself is a great watch though. Really interesting world with diverse settings and cultures. Wonderful soundtrack, too. Definitely from the 80s haha. I watched this right on the heels of finishing Princess Mononoke. They both seem to have "humans are the cancer of the earth" undertones what with the mass deforestation in Mononoke and the global pollution in Nausicaa.

I really liked this movie. Considering it was made a year before I was born the animation is SUPERB! Great voice work, and characters. What brought it down for me was the end. No real resolution with either of the two countries.

If they spent a scene or two declaring peace between all of them I would have rated this higher.

However I would like to see some other themes other than environmental devastation by humans. This, Princess Mononoke, Ponyo, Howl's Moving Castle....almost all his movies seem to share the same theme.

But it still gets a solid 7/10

This sets the template for almost all the Ghibli films, spirited Female lead, enviromental messages, flying machines, messages of peace etc.

I did notice a lot of things in common with Princess Mononoke.

For a 1984 film is stands up well in terms of art & music, even the synths don't seem out of place as they are mostly used on the glider scenes, which work well.

About the only complaint is the storyline getting bogged down in the middle & the ending feeling a bit rushed trying.

I've not read the manga to see how things played out, so I'm guessing it was ending all the plot strands that had been featured upto that point.

What a great story, I've definitely missed by not watching this up to now. This is perhaps the best movie from Ghibli for me.

1. Characters: +1 | Nausicaa wins a point here by herself. What a great heroine.
2. Atmosphere: +1 | When it came to the insect-populated territories, the atmosphere was so good, I could easily spend most of the anime's duration
3. OST: +1 | Good OST, going well with the anime.
4. Animation: +1 Good quality, despite the anime's age.
5. Background story: +0.5 | The apocalypse brought by man, which effects eventually started getting reversed by the land, I think it was a really solid background.
6. Storyline: +1 | Definitely one of the strong titles in Ghibli's list, when it comes to storyline development. I think the story was perfectly done.
7. Ending: +1 | Beautiful ending, one of the most memorable, not only for Ghibli movies, but even when it comes to everything I've watched.
8. Drama: +0.5 | More sublime than apparent, but definitely one of the things I loved about this.
9. Overall affect: +1 | Some time in and I got immersed in the world set by the story, having one of my best spent moments times ever.
10. Bonus score: +1 | Once again, for everything good this story offered.
Overall score: 9/10.

It's been ten years since I've seen this movie. I used to go to an anime night at a local comic book store and it was on of the first Myyazaki films I've watched. I remember elements of it, but it didn't stick with me as much as some of his other works.

I think my favorite thing about this movie is the bugs. The ohm are absolutely adorable. I have a lot of empathy for them even with their lack of expression. The film has aged pretty well -- the visuals and music are very well made.

The middle of the movie is an absolute drag. I had to pause it a couple times and come back to it late. The characters are also flat. I honestly think Nausicaa dying at the end would have been a better choice, with the ohm lifting her body while grieving, since this would still fit the savior with blue robes in a golden field prophecy.

Altogether it was a bit better than average. 6/10

It was pretty average but damn the part nearing the end escalated things quite a bit~ Nausicaa getting shot and having that gunshot wound dipped in an acid lake made me wince... Good thing she managed to save the baby and the valley.

The Ouhms just dreams of a place where the toxins just went away. The Pejites and Tolmekians got off lightly with one of them luring hundreds of death bugs by using a young one as bait to destroy the valley and the latter starting this mess and prematurely reviving a superweapon. The legend got a lot of work to do lol

A film that despite its 34 years worn on its shoulders, deals with topics that are still very current. A film touching especially in the final part, a character that of Nausicaä is too charismatic and that with his philosophy of life is from teaching for all of us: forgiveness from more tangible results than those derived from violence. Evoking the backgrounds and the soundtrack that mixes musicality that spans all genres. Great film to use as an example against this world still full of hatred and consumerist concepts. The action in this film was fantastic.

Nearly not as good as I thought it would be. The main character was good but the whole thing was so boring to watch as it failed to explain important details properly and let the audience know what's going on. I barely understood that the Ohmu were actually trying to protect that secret place with clear water and they had no bad intentions so it was wrong to fight them. But it was explained so badly that anyone could miss it. What would be left from the movie if you missed THAT plot development?
