Thanks for the review on sono bisque,I'll I'm not great at putting my thoughts into more complex written critique without sounding like an azz. I've been watching and reading anime enough to feel out most trajectories and sono bisque gave it to me and I'm glad your review affirmed my dropping it.

I played Thief for the first time when I was already an adult (a couple of years ago). I liked some stealth games as a child, especially the splinter cell games. Some people think that these old games (like thief and other games that came out before 2000) have too bad graphics and only nostalgia is what makes people like them, but in my case it is quite the opposite. I guess some people just care about graphics too much.

The reason I play it now again is that last year in November a new mod came out for thief, called “the black parade”, which has the size of a whole new thief game and it became somewhat famous. I saw a video from Mandaloregaming about it and wanted to try it out. With that I also found out about fanmissions, so missions that people create themselves and upload. And since then I, from time to time, play some of the missions. Some of them have very high quality, even better than the ones from the base game. Besides the stealth aspect I really like the riddle or puzzle solving aspect of these missions (I am a huge sucker for puzzle games), and also the story aspects, in which some missions really shine. Its quite interesting that the fanmission community is still so active for thief with new missions releasing every month, even though basically no one is playing thief on twitch and also youtube videos of the missions barely get any views.

Also before that I played MH world again and started modding as well, especially fought some modded monsters (white and crimson fatalis, etc), but I heard that Capcom absolutely hates modding and will try to prevent it in MH rise and the upcoming MH wilds, which is a shame. I heard they also partnered up with a Russian anti-cheat software, which is infamous for being spyware, which is why I will probably wait and check carefully before buying another Capcom game.

I saw a few videos from Genshin impact. It looks fun, especially the world exploration, collecting all the different things and also the combat. Not sure how the story is but the character all seem very anime. But I guess the game is a big time sink, right? Funnily enough the kids from my boss are playing it and he sometimes complained about it to me^^

I haven’t touch Elden ring in a while. After I finished my SL1 run I had enough of the game. I wanted to also do a magic play through and maybe do some modding but I lost interest. That was even before they included the pvp arena, so I haven’t even seen that one.

I think in our last conversation we mostly talked about the things we didn’t like and not so much the things we enjoyed. For me, if I like something I tend to focus on the things that could have been better… maybe a bit too much. Yeah Elden ring did a lot of things right, but I think the things I was criticising before still hold true (but I guess I would need to replay the game to truly know).

One thing we didn’t really talk about was the Melania boss fight, which became kinda infamous, especially among the Elden ring critiques. Have you seen any of the youtube reviews (such as from Josephanderson or Neverknowsbest)? They basically all complained about that boss. In my opinion, the Melania boss fight is probably my favourite in the whole game (most of the time the hardest boss fights are the most memorable in the souls games…. Manus for ds1, sword saint isshin for sekiro and so on… although ds3 and ds2 probably don’t have 1 hardest boss fight in my opinion). What do you think about that fight?

I am not even sure if I will come back right after the DLC is released, especially because I will be a bit busy at that time. Maybe I will wait some time before I buy it, but I am somewhat looking forward to it. I also recently saw that they will make a sequel to Kingdom come deliverance, which I am more hyped for… but its still gonna take some time.

Currently I am mostly playing Thief (the one from 1998), especially fanmissions, which is basically endless content^^ Have you played that game? I also recently played MH rise sunbreak. I remember we talked about MH world before. Have you also played rise, especially sunbreak?

Thanks. We are all doing well. It’s already been 5 months now. Got it during the Christmas time, which was nice since I could stay at home and help.

I also sometimes have the feeling that I might not like a show that much anymore if I rewatch it, but many times I am pleasantly surprised that I actually do^^. And if I don’t, I think I just wasn’t in the mood for it. Like I am currently rewatching Cowboy Bebop after watching Mushishi, so I wanted some more tragic, slow, emotional shows and that’s definitely not what Cowboy Bebop is with its overall exciting, happy gangster vibes with not many consequences (except for the very end).

I heard that the next Demon slayer arc is supposed to be a training arc. I already didn’t really like the last one, so I am not really looking forward to it. But after finishing the other new anime I might as well check it out.
I liked the first few episodes of Jujutsu Kaisen S2, but I also have some problems with them. The rest of the anime was ok, I guess.. it don’t have a lot to say about it. Im not really a big fan of gojou or the main guy. Have you already seen the movie? I think it came out before S2.

The funny thing is that I found Yuru camp because I finished Non non Biyoris S3, so I wanted to watch another anime like it and found Yuru camp. I ended up liking it even more than non non biyori, because of its music and vibes of camping. Really makes you want to camp…

I heard good things about Godzilla Minus One, so I intended to watch it at some point, but I am not the biggest fan of the whole Godzilla franchise, that’s why it wasn’t very high on my priority list. It’s a sequal to Shin-Godzilla, right? I remember liking that one. I haven’t watched a lot of new live-action movies recently. Just rewatched some of my old favourites. Recently rewatched “12 angry men” and “the big short”. Have you seen any of these?

I am also doing good. Had some big changes in my life recently with becoming a father. Other than that not much has changed :)

Hi there devinder! How are you doing? Its been a while since we last talked.

I saw we talked about "The vision of Escaflowne" last time... I actually recently rewatched the series, so I could give you a better answer to your question if you are still interested ^^

Also saw you watched Frieren and the ending of Attack on Titan. What did you think of it? You think Frieren will stay at the top of the rankings?

really well written my dress up darling manga review 😎

Sorry for the late reply, was a little busy last week. Mononoke definitely reminded me of Mushishi, but instead of being relaxing I guess it wanted to be a bit unnerving. I think that in combination with having this characterless main protagonist didn’t really work for me. I mostly liked the reveals of the mystery (like the ending with the journalist, the incense story and also the part with the fish demon) but the build-up felt a little sluggish. And having almost a shounen-est fighting sequence at the end of each chapter was very out of place in my opinion.

I never heard about the planned number of episode for Escaflowne before. It’s been ages since I watched it and I will probably come back to your question after rewatching it but as far as I remember it didn’t feel fast paced at the end.

It kinda felt like with HP this focusing on being more mature maybe started with the third movie and the actors getting more in the teenager years. I think the things that I don’t like about the later movies is the flip flopping between wanting to be mature and having a comedic side to it, or for example in the 6th movie, the romantic comedy side. But I guess If you take HP too serious you find yourself confronted with many issues, such as 1-dimensional villains and questionable world building (mostly from the books, with justifying slavery and those sorts of things).

I mostly don’t spend hours at a time playing games and watching anime or movies either, but rather separated chunks. I think anime with its ~20 min format is quite good for that.
Lockensocke Mar 10, 2023 7:31 AM
Its ok if you take a little longer to reply, I also am sometimes busy and cant reply very soon. Take your time^^

I would say I am more into anime and manga again because of some random spark in interest^^ I kinda set my goal to finish most of the series that I had on my watch list and some that I had dropped (and many people regard as classics, I guess), but let’s see how long my motivation lasts. I can already see that I am quite bored with the 2 last anime I started, “Mononoke” and “Carole and Tuesday”.

I also definitely want to rewatch some of my old favorites, especially “Escaflowne” (which is in my opinion one of the most underrated gems out there) and “12 Kingdoms” (which I only have seen once so far and I forgot it a little bit)…. So I guess the rather old isekais^^ I am actually not a big fan of the isekai genre, but those two I remember fondly.

With the HP movies I actually liked a few of the later ones and disliked some of the earlier ones. I mean the first movie is probably the best but after that one I would already put 7.1 and 5 (I don’t understand why many people disliked 7.1, I really found it refreshing that they went away from the Hogwarts school theme and made something new). And I don’t understand why people liked the third one so much, it was average for me. But I guess number 6 and the final one were a bit lackluster.

I have been watching stuff in higher speed for quite some time now, especially Youtube videos, but not everything, movies and TV shows I didn’t normally increase the speed. With anime I recently started to do it more. And there were some shows where I still enjoyed the experience, reduced the speed and rewatched some scenes, such as “Welcome to the NHK”.

I guess I caught up now a little on more recent shows, but everything I watched was just ok, nothing really special amongst them. The only thing that looks promising is the new Vinland saga season, but I will have to see how it develops. Did any anime come out recently that you enjoyed? I still have to watch some more shows that look a little interesting though, such as the chainsaw man anime. I remember you recommended me the manga. If I like the anime I will give it a try afterwards. :P

When I watched Wednesday I didn’t really have anything else to watch and since I never saw anything from the Adams family before I was a little interested. The mystery elements of the show kept me hooked, even if the ending was a little predictable.

I don’t really have all too much to say to Ragnaroks ending. It just felt generic and Marvel-movie like, without any interesting plot or character development.

I played Kingdom come deliverance back when it came out 5 years ago for the first time. It had some bugs but I didn’t mind most of them too much. Now I play it again since its been so long and I wanted to see what content they added or if the game changed. I also play a different difficulty, which alters the gameplay a bit.

Hollow knight and Undertale I have played. Hollow knight I really enjoyed a lot, Undertale was nice but I think it is a little overhyped. I have never heard about Rogue Legacy before. Is it good?

I guess I could recommend a tone of Indie games for you if you haven’t played many, since there are a lot of good ones out there. If you like Hollow knight for example, I can recommend Ori and the blind forest (Its sequel Ori and the will of the wisps is even better). Other 2D side scroller which I can recommend are Cuphead and Katana Zero. Also if you like platformes, games like Celeste and SuperMeatboy are very good, although a bit challenging. If you want something more story driven, maybe "A plague tale: innocent" and maybe Soma (if you like horror). And for something completely unique I would check out “Papers Please” or “Disco Elysium”, at least for me they were something I never saw anywhere else. I guess nowadays some indie games are on par with triple A ones when it comes to graphic so its sometimes difficult to tell what is an indie game^^, I also still have many indie games on my to-play list, so i will keep you updated when I find a gem.

What do you think about the new Hogwards legacy game? Interested in it? For me I will probably be waiting for a sale before I buy it, but it looks nice.
Lockensocke Feb 18, 2023 12:21 AM
I remember I really loved Clannad the first time I watched it. It was probably the most emotional show for me and I like the soundtrack. Later it got a lower and lower score from me until the point that I thought its drama is rather forced and manipulative. In retrospect I think that I must have done at least some things right and you can probably say that every show is to some degree is manipulative since it tries to convey a certain emotion (be it fear, excitement, sadness etc.)

The topic of scoring and normal distributions is quite fascinating to me. If you, for example, take the scores of all MAL users, I bet that when you average over them you won’t get a normal distribution but something that is more skewed towards the higher scores. Now does that mean human scoring is not normally distributed but biased and therefore forcing a bell curve is also unnatural or maybe you can try to remove some of your biases by forcing a bell curve? I don’t really have a good answer to that.

Yeah I guess the thing with shows that get better later is, the ratio of good to bad and the question if it is worth it. For example, suffering through 3 boring episodes to get 100 good ones later is something I would do, but of course the question is how reliable is it that those 100 will really be good. If I can trust the source, it’s a different thing, than the opinion of the majority of MAL and youtube users (because I can’t trust them). Also there are other options, like if the first half is bad and the rest is good you can also watch just a summary of the first half and start with the second one, or what I recently do a lot is speeding up the shows. I normally watch everything now with 1.5x speed, if I get bored I speed up to 2x if it becomes more interesting I watch it normally. Maybe my attention span became shorter because of the internet or because I get older, but this method works for me now^^

My favourite moment in Welcome to the NHK was when he lied to his mother about having a job and a girlfriend and then when she believed him we was thinking: “Why do you have to believe everything I said so easily? Why are you so happy for me?”. That’s when I really thought, that this show has some great character moments. The whole episode was probably my favourite.

Since I don’t own any play station I watched the full story of God of war ragnarök with some of the fights on youtube (it was a 15 hours video I believe). I really liked the portrayal of Odin, however I didn’t like the ending. Have you already seen the ending? I don’t want to spoiler you and discuss the ending when you haven’t finished it yet.

For me I recently bought a lot of small indi games, which I still have many to complete. Games such as Minimetro, Tokyo42, path of giants, last campfire, etc. But the one that stuck out most so far and that I spend the longest on is Babaisyou. A very neat puzzle game that gets very hard very soon. I already spend like 40 hours into it, more than any other puzzle game so far. Other than that I am playing my second playthrough of Kingdom Comes Deliverance. I don’t remember if we have talked about this game yet.

I actually haven’t seen any of the recent movie. The only thing recent I watched was the TV show House of the dragon, which I really enjoyed (especially the first half). That one actually got me into Kingdom come again and also into watching anime. I also watched the new TV show Wednesday, which I fairly liked. Movies I only have seen some old movies recently. One that I just recently found was the 1991 drama “Swing kids” which plays during nazi Germany time and deals with indoctrination. I have a few recent movies on my list to watch but haven’t gotten around to watch them, such as the new “All quiet on the western front” movie, Glass Onion and the new Hellraiser movie.
Lockensocke Feb 14, 2023 1:25 AM
Yeah life has been quite constant for me recently, with work, movies, games and so on.

I think the largest changes to the rating I gave to “Erased” and “Planets”, both shows I dropped before (and gave them a 2) but now I finished them and upgraded them to a 6. I also upgraded both seasons of Clannad since I found my rating a little too harsh (it was 4 before now I also gave it a 6). Other than that I mostly did small changes, especially trying to give shows which I gave a 1 a higher score. It’s a slow process but eventually I want to model my ratings after a nice bell curve. However, all the shows which I dropped after 1 episode and gave a 1 drag my ratings down a bit^^. My philosophy always was that even if I watch just 1 episode, if the show can’t keep my interest it should get a low rating. I still kinda stand by that even though I also can understand the other perspective that you should finish a show first or at least have seen a large portion of it before rating it. What is your opinion on that?

But with overhaul I also meant that I changed the design of my list from the very old design to a flashy one where you can see the pictures of the shows :) (it makes it slower to load the list however which is a bummer)

I also recently finished “Welcome to the NHK” after having it on hold for more than 5 years (I think). Now I found it quite nice and funny with interesting characters. I wonder why I couldn’t get into it the last time. The ending was maybe a little bit underwhelming in my opinion but I need to think about it more. Now I am currently reading the manga and I am thinking of getting the novel. I heard that the anime follows the novel more closely than the manga, what do you think?

What games are you playing currently? I am also currently playing some games on the side.
Lockensocke Feb 9, 2023 1:35 AM
Hi, how are you doing?
I recently became more active on MAL again and watched some more anime.

Also did a very needed overhaul of my anime and manga list and trying to slowly adjust my ratings and actually finish off some series which I had on hold and even dropped.

What have you been up to?
