I did do some longer writing in some of the Dragon Ball chapter discussions and didn’t want to just repeat things in my arc thoughts. I was pretty critical of the whole final fight against Cell. I like the Goku vs Cell part, and that’s it. I don’t like Goku making Gohan fight. I don’t like Gohan’s personality change when he transforms. I hate the return of Cell in perfect form. And yeah, Gohan’s transformation being triggered by C16 (which I wrote about here https://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=331367)
And I find Piccolo mostly boring after the Saiyan arc. I think his arc has a satisfying completion with his sacrifice to save Gohan. He’s done better in the Cell arc than on Namek though. I guess there’s some drama with him and God. But their unification just makes him even more boring in the end. Piccolo has a few cool moments in the arc, like his fight against Cell and C17, but they are too short to really impress me. I like Piccolo more in the Buu arc, where he mainly feels like God. He’s perfect as the “straight man” in the training with Goten and Trunks.
I see you watched the Sand Land movie and enjoyed it. I love that the series got more recognition with a movie, anime series and video game. It’s one of Toriyama’s best and I would love more of his series to get a similar treatment. It’s just nice when more people talk about something else than just Dragon Ball.
I really need to finish Atlanta. I love that series but only watched the first two seasons way back when they came out. So I need to rewatch those and then watch the newer seasons. I know Glover was influenced by Twin Peaks and there’s some similarities in tone. But they really are quite different.
Haha, I love you mentioning half the album as your favourites of Imaginal Disk. But yeah, it really is that good. I listened to Death & Romance and Image a lot when they came out as singles. After the album release I mainly listen to the whole thing, and that makes it a bit difficult to talk about individual songs as I think they work so well together.
Favourites would be Image, Death & Romance, That’s My Floor and The Ballad of Matt & Mica. They are the stand outs as individual songs. That’s My Floor especially is my favourite and the one I have listened to the most. Just makes me dance. Really hope they do a proper world tour at some point so I can see them.
I did play 64 and Sunshine on the Switch so I am planning to play Galaxy at some point as well. Probably this summer vacation. And probably won’t play Galaxy 2 for that same reason.
I’m really not up to date with games. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of MultiVersus. Or maybe I have but forgot. Doesn’t really look like anything I would enjoy. I haven't played any “modern” online games which seasons and all that. I guess I can see the appeal though.
I still feel I have lots of games for my Switch to play, so I’m not really thinking of the new console yet. As you know, gaming isn’t what I tend to prioritise my time with. And so, I feel like I’m always a few years behind. The Switch could probably last for about 5 years for me, before I ever need a new console. But I like the idea of it just being a Switch 2 (and I like that it isn’t called New Nintendo Switch XL Deluxe or something). I will probably pick it up, even if not straight away. It depends on what games come out. Maybe Mario Kart will be reason enough. It is the one game I tend to play when I have friends over. But I think I will wait until there’s something big, like a Mario or Zelda. Are you hoping for something specific for the console?
I read Phantom Blood a while ago and told myself "I will definitely read 2-5... someday". But someday hasn't arrived yet xD I picked up reading Stone Ocean right after the Golden Wind anime finished airing, so that's why I've read all the later parts.
JoJoLands is alright so far. I think it feels pretty similar to Jojolion with the modern setting, and Araki's style that he's developed in parts 7 and 8. I haven't really connected with the characters that much yet, but the few stand battles so far have been pretty entertaining.
Yeah I think I am somewhere inside the boat and crazy things were happening last I read. But I think lost track it was so complex. Have to get back to it though !
Btw I have been reviewing this marvelous new anime called Orb : On the movements of the earth from Madhouse. Highly recommended. Part of the reason am back to MAL again.
I did some deep discussions over 25 episodes for the last 6 months

Starting with the most important, I have finally finished my re-read of Dragon Ball and also re-read most of his later work. Toriyama definitely is one of the most important artists in my life, so his death was very sad. As always with dead artists of any kind, their death brings out a lot of praise. And it’s been great to see him appreciated so much lately.
Gotta say, even though it took such a long time to re-read the full series. This time reading Dragon Ball was such a great journey. Writing down my thoughts as I go along really made me think about some things that I haven’t really done before, or at least not articulated. You might enjoy to read my rants at the end of the Cell and Buu arcs, if you can find them. I also did a ranking of the 10 arcs in the last chapter thread. The Cell arc is at my number 9 spot.
Also had a lot of fun re-reading his other works (Cowa, Neko Majin and Sand Land). I see you haven’t read Cowa or Neko Majin and I highly recommend them. Neko Majin is just a short fun gag manga, reminiscent of the tone of Dr. Slump. Also ties into Dragon Ball, which is fun. Cowa is also a short fun read, but has a full story. I think it’s one of Toriyama’s best works, and really underrated. It is aimed at a younger audience though (the only Toriyama comedy without any sexual comedy, if you can believe it)... So yeah, you should definitely check them out if you get the urge to read some manga.
Sand Land is probably my favourite manga after Dragon Ball. It’s a bit too short, but I love the characters, setting and tone of it. I also watched the anime film and series. The second half of the series was a completely new story, and it was nice to see some new Toriyama material. I guess it was the second to last thing he worked on (Daima being the last).
The only Toriyama manga i still need to re-read is Jaco, which I at least enjoyed a lot the first time I read it. After that, I think I’m going to try to watch through the Dragon Ball Z movies (I did watch the three Dragon Ball movies right as Toriyama passed). And at some point, I think it’s time to read the Dragon Ball Super manga, and then watch some of those newer films that I have yet to watch.
Speaking of dying artists. Another big one for me recently was of course David Lynch. Another one of my all time favourites. So I had to start a watchthrough of all his films. Currently I have watched his first 5 feature films and am now watching Twin Peaks season 2.
Going back to music, I pretty much only use Rateyourmusic to find new music nowadays. The charts where you can sort by country, genre, decade, whatever, is really excellent. And I find I trust random internet music nerds more than the most popular or successful songs and albums.
2024 had some great new music. Great return from Vampire Weekend. Billie Eilish releasing her best album. My two favourite albums of the year were by The Cure and Magdalena Bay. The Cure released their first album in 16 years, and it’s one of their best. Really fun to have such an old band release that good music. And Magdalena Bay had album of the year last time they released an album, and they did it again in 2024. Imaginal Disk is such a great album, and even surpasses the excellent debut. I know you liked Mercurial World, so did you listen to Imaginal Disk? What did you think about it?
And finally, games. I havn’t played that much. I finished Tears of the Kingdom, which I liked more and more as I played it. It took a while longer than Botw to get hooked, but when I did, I loved it. It surpassed Botw on many levels (boss battles, tighter story, dungeons, really inventive powers). But I overall prefer botw and the tone and simplicity of that game. Exploring felt a lot more fun, and it offered more freedom in how you progressed through the story and world.
I also played Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine. I’ve touched them before, but never truly played them. It’s easy to see Super Mario 64’s importance in history and it was a blast to play. The controls and camera were a bit clunky though, which drags it down. Sunshine started out excellent, and I absolutely love the setting and story setup. But it quickly got a bit meandering with repetitiveness, and didn’t go anywhere.
I played Kirby’s Dream Land for the Game Boy and Kirby’s Adventure for the NES (both on my switch). Kirby’s Adventure was great. I’m definitely going to keep exploring the series with some newer games at some point. But it’s always fun to go back to the beginning.
I started playing the Link’s Awakening remake a while ago, but got held up and haven’t played for along time now. The original is one of my favourite games though, and the remake is excellent. I’m probably going to finish it next vacation. And my plan is to play Echoes of Wisdom afterwards.
I guess you have played a lot of games since last time? I reckon that’s still what takes up most of your time.
Feels like the Hunter x Hunter chapters came out such a long time ago now. But they were great and it did surprise me to get a big flashback at this point. I don’t think anyone would have guessed it. And I loved pretty much all of it. Love the way the troupe was created and seeing a completely different Chrollo. Pakunoda was one of my favourite parts of it and the reason that I teared up, pretty much for the reasons you say. Paku has always been one of my favourite members as I love her story in the Yorknew City arc. Her storyline was one of the reasons HxH became my favourite shounen way back when I first watched the anime. The 1999 anime has her meeting a bunch of cats in a alley shortly before dying and that’s a moment that stuck with me. It’s great that she’s not forgotten and still seems to be seen as one of the most important troupe members, even if she died so early on in the manga.
Really interesting to hear your thoughts about some of the music. Cool that you found some stuff that you like!
Blue Rev was everything I wanted and I did guess correctly that it would be one of the best albums of the year. I don’t know if I like it more than Antisocialites but they are definitely equal. Antisocialites has been my go-to album for such a long time that it’s difficult to compare at this point. The first three tracks on Blue Rev are excellent, with “After the Earthquake” being my favourite as well, definitely my most played song on the album. I also love “Velveteen” which would be my number two. The album did earn my number two spot for 2022 overall.
Magdalena Bay really is excellent. I got quite blown away by Mercurial World when it came out, and it is my album of the year 2021. I had already listened to their mixtapes and EPs and that point, but the album really is something else. “The Beginning” was probably my most played song that year as well.
I never fully listened to the deluxe version, I only checked out the new tracks. I never bother with deluxe versions or bonus tracks overall, especially not with albums that are actually well made as albums.
I have pretty much completed my music journey throughout the world. I did a total of 162 countries where I usually listened to a couple of albums per country. Some countries didn’t really have much available though so I just listened to whatever i found.
Music through the ages is another great way to discover music. I have an album of the year for every year starting from 1939. Got deeper into 40’s and 50’s music recently and it was a lot of fun.
I’ve never heard of Millennium. It seems to be a somewhat forgotten show because I didn’t find much when I searched. But it does look interesting. And I’m all for ambitious failures haha. Love me some weird stuff. Especially great when it happens in a TV series, which is one of my favourite things about Twin Peaks. So yeah, I’m gonna add that to my watchlist. But it feels as if I should probably watch the X-files first.
What else is new for me?
I've started playing Kirby and the Forgotten Land and really liking it. I haven't played much Kirby before but definitely will after this one. The feeling of finding new things to swallow/new powers reminds me a lot of the wonder of discovery I had playing Mario Odyssey. Also obviously just a really cute game which I like. Think I've probably played about half of it now.
And my next game will be Tears of the Kingdom which I'm obviously looking forward to a lot. I'm a bit worried it will be a bit too focused on the new powers and maybe a bit too similar to Breath of the Wild, but I have high hopes.
I also continued my re-read of the Dragon Ball manga which I took a big break on. I just finished the Saiyan arc and did do some writing in the chapter discussions if you're interested to read some of my thoughts.
Honestly when it comes to modern music I mostly listen to women for whatever reason.
I've been following wrestling, but just clips recently and yes been watching the Bloodline storyline quite a bit. What a turn around Roman has had huh? And loving what's been going on with Sami too. Honestly haven't watched much NJPW/Stardom in a while so I've missed out on the Mercedes/Kairi match will be sure to check it out when next I sub though.
Also Matt Healy is awesome. 1975 fan? lol
