The one person who reviewed it was absolutely right. This is a simple exercise in stream-of-conscious improvisation and allegory. The improv aspect is obvious if you know anything about jazz, in particular free jazz, and it's probably not a coincidence that the guy on the beach appears to be a black man. Like the review (um_esper) said, the character is obviously anxious and the allegory seems to be "an attempt to explore consumerism and militarism" if anything at all -- that's probably starting to look too deeply into it, but it certainly has something going on psychologically, and it just plays around with that anxiety. I couldn't help but crack up when a second head pops out of the guy's belly and they both giggle. |

This is some pure proto Liquid Television stuff here and here I thought FLCL was the weirdest thing gainax made. |

I didn't understand anything except the "The gods must be crazy" reference... Is this supposed to be about consumerism and modern days society ? Enjoyment: 2/5 (probably because I can't grasp it) Score: ? (I won't rate something with no knowledge of its intended goal) @St0rmblade I never stop to check the names behind animation pieces but thanks to you, I just learned why some fragments here reminded me so much of Birth. |

Not only do I have no idea WTF I just watched, I think this pretty much sums up what the 80's were about actually more like it sums up what every decade was about leading up to the 80's. Also I think that in order to understand any of this you need to be as high as possible and I mean HIGH (even though this entire thing felt like some weird acid trip). It had some interesting choice of music I'll say that some of it was actually pretty good Like I said earlier I strongly recommend watching this while high if it still doesn't make sense it means you weren't high enough. |

Well... At least it had some Kanada style...and an upside down city...and a dinosaur... Sadamoto's cut https://www.sakugabooru.com/post/show/18150 Kanada's cut https://www.sakugabooru.com/post/show/28326 That girl on a flying bike also looked Kanada-ish, as well as the whole cut. Also some nice jazz soundtrack. Gainax only did animation here (I'm not even sure that they did it in its entirety), so whoever credited Gainax on MAL as the studio responsible for this OVA is probably wrong. kandi_gloss said: Give me a source rather than "well it's accepted among fans as being true" like someone else said to me when they got very angry that I dared to say that this was by Gainax and I might believe you. I was basing my statement on the ANN info. There's a number of studios credited, and it's not easy to determine their level of involvement (as is often the case with anime productions). Also look at the people credited, for example those who did key animation don't seem to have any Gainax work in their portfolio. The guy responsible for production coordination was involved in NGE though. But Gainax as a studio is credited only for animation. It's messy. https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=7074 |

Not as bad as I remember, and not "racist" like certain youtube videos made by people that don't seem to understand differences in cultures claim (though it may be a bit xenophoic). I rather enjoyed this on my second watching. St0rmblade said: Gainax only did animation here (I'm not even sure that they did it in its entirety), so whoever credited Gainax on MAL as the studio responsible for this OVA is probably wrong. Nah, I refuse to believe that and think that's just Gainax fanboys not wanting to admit they made this. This has the early Gainax style all over it. Give me a source other than "well it's accepted among fans as being true" like someone else said to me when they got very angry that I dared to say that this was by Gainax and I might believe you. Sorry for stereotyping you as a gainax fanboy, I think I should try harder to not do things like that in the future |

While it wasn't animated or drawn badly at all, I didn't really like this one mostly because of how bored I was while watching this. I'm generally not a fan of stuff that only has trippy visuals to offer and the "quirky trio goes on to do antics" bit just reminds me of cartoons that I've been fed up with from years back. It was interesting seeing Gainax's first creation, though. What fascinated me the most were the parts where I could definitely see the Gainax style and flair that can be found in their later works. |

Uhhhh Huuuh Huuuuuuuh Boooooh Ruugglrglr huuuughuuuuuuuuh REEEEEEEE! Ruciss, sexist, technocratic, anthropomorphic, Trypophobic huuuuurrr! Hahaaa, squeamish dweebs. This seemingly mindless art piece played you out, just by eliciting this kind of dorkish reaction. Makes me snickers, FLCL is ten times more juvenile than that, and people are only a little short to kiss the drawing boards where it was created as they're saint relics, lol. There are so many people dunking on Chocolate Panic, and yet you hear no huffpuffers reaction about the edgy avant-garde short "Nido to Mezamenu Komori Uta", where a rape is actually pictured just because. Both seem to share the same commentary subtext around militarization and civilization's revolutions, except "Chocolate Panic" seem to handle it in a more cheery than grossing out way. The word revolution is oddly topical here, as a lot of things seem to gyrate and rotate, right down to the compass-like ground where the characters stand at the end. Aside from that, I found nothing much to day, besides what the top reviewer's absolutely spot on analysis. It was alright. Like any of these surrealist arthouses, really. These works don't really aim to be qualitative or anything, just whimsically expressive. They're a firework of animated bravado, nothing more. There, take a good fart, indignant ones. |

So this is what happens when you just decide to have fun with whatever intrusive unfiltered thought comes up to your mind and decide to animate it. Pure art in my opinion which should be watched under the perspective of "I wonder what are they going to do next, I don't care about plot or anything, just unleash your creativity and do whatever you want". It's the equivalent of typing "asjlkdghsalkjhsakrtasoweahrtorthat" and I just love it for that. Still a 7/10 because of the breathing sounds. |
