Ochanomizu is such a kind soul. Seeing Tenma in this adaptation makes me wonder if the OG Tenma served as some inspiration for Gendo Ikari. Pluto's Tenma definitely gives me Gendo vibes.

This adaptation continues to impress. The animation is Atom's scene was absolutely beautiful. I kept rewinding the scene to watch it again.

Because if Adolf just kills Gesich, he will be made a murderer and Gesich will be mourned as a hero. Their objective is to bury Gesich repution with the killing of Adolf's brother and other scandals little by litte to influence public opinion on robots.

Woah, I didn't expect it to happen. RIP Captain Atom aka Astro Boy. This show doesn't bother to rely on plot armor when telling a story. Nice. I liked bold takes in scenarios. I wonder if later on Atom will be rebuilt somehow? We will see. I feel there might be a chance of something like this actually occuring.

Knowing that this is a retelling of an arc from Astro Boy I find it very hard to believe that Atom is actually dead (also using copium cause he’s my fave character lol)

Dang, I didn't think Atom would get killed off midway.

Adolf pairing up with Gesicht looks like redemption character arc incoming.

what an insane episode - that was Monster level. The fastest paced episode but definitely the tightest in terms of writing imo. It started off a bit clunky but seems to have found its rhythm now

The author really wanted a spin-off story where Tenma was the villain, huh?
It's weird seeing this episode and looking at how the trailers sold me on the fact that Atom was the main character for some reason, it also helps seeing the similarities with Astro Boy, in his design at least, and then he gets offed. By the looks of it, the detective looks more and more like the sole protagonist.

Have they killed the Atum already? The world's super mega blaster robots are running out. But the doctor at the end said that Atum is a mistake because he can make mistakes. I think he must return in some way, what was said has to be developed in some way.

IIRC from 2003 Astro Boy, despite being lauded as one of the greatest robots Tenma believes Atom is a failure because he can never be his son Tobio, no matter how perfectly he can imitate him. Beyond that though, I think Tenma's view is AI tht's only allowed to feel or express positive emotions, is not perfect, because a human also feels/expresses negative emotions. We have seen anger emerge in Gesicht though as he's visibly disgusted as his fellow robot being beaten by Adolf. To Gesicht, Adolf's part of an Anti-Robot hate group, and knows he holds a grudge.

Novels I have read/am reading pending approval: since November 10 2022

Simply brilliant episode. Translations in the subtitles can be a bit clumsy, but I am glad that I got something new out of this story so many years after reading the manga.

Didn't expect the beginning of the episode to be so emotional and tear-jerking (the scene with the obsolete robot dog always gets me in the manga, but the anime hits differently).

Holding out to Astro Boy not actually being dead but idk. The other robots seem to have been a pretty big deal as well yet they're definitely dead. For all I know this is kind of like an alternate universe storyline you'd find in superhero comic books.

That’s it?! Atom is just gone? Such a lame way of again and again going about disposing of all these significant characters and reveal nothing again and again.

10/10 episode. I loved every part of the Adolf plot line so far it’s genuinely amazing. I find it hard to believe that Atom is dead because he’s listed as a main character, but if he is then I respect the balls of this show. How cool it is to have another “Dr. Tenma” in another of this author’s works…

Don't get Tenma's logic. Why create a robot that is capable of hatred and murder??? Perfect robot is a deadlier human? Dude's messed up and should've been locked up.

just reading these reviews makes me realize a lot of y’all have never attempted to watch/read/consume many stories outside of anime. this probably isn’t the place to vent this but how is the humanity unwarranted?? how is it an insult on “viewer’s intelligence”??? i BEG y’all to watch one David Lynch film. hell, even Cronenberg. i think the characters of the robots show an extremely empathetic side to humanity as they were created to protect and serve humans and in learning about humanity and coexisting find appreciation for it, like did episode 2 just not exist??? the entire dialogue between Brando and Geischt just didn’t happen??? i know it’s everyone’s subjective opinion but god if you’re literally forcing your viewing JUST to consume then maybe it’s not for you lol. hoping this doesn’t catch flack i haven’t been active on this site in years but i just feel so many of the reviews approach towards the story itself are so weak and underdeveloped. but anyways, this episode was a gut wrencher. not at all excited for the next but i’m enamored with how incredible this pacing is. i’m hooked.

Another really damn good episode with plenty of tension building up again (especially with Gesicht, Haas and the video that showcased Darius XIV's potential involvement), some heartbreak with Atom's death against Pluto, and Tenma's philosophy towards the perfect robot towards the end. Tenma's logic sure was twisted but his idea of perfection for artificial intelligence to replicate humans is ironically having imperfections and frustrations that could lead to anger/hatred, which are common human emotions left out to be cleansed. Considering Gesicht was pissed off at the end there as Adolf beat up a cleaning robot alongside some frustrations surrounding his memories and nightmares, there seems to be a lot to discover about Gesicht over the next few episodes. I'm happy this series only has 8 long episodes, too many episodes would make this feel a little boring but the writing has been fairly tight and has consistently been engaging throughout the first half.

The story keeps getting better and better, Dr Tenma seems the big bad and I thought Ochanomizu made Atom but turns out Dr Tenma made him.
This is really engaging tbh, I like how the story is slowly making more and more sense. So presumably Dr Tenma made Pluto which is the ultimate robot.
Atom surely cant be dead right? :(

Hmm well I'm pretty sure this is a canon story in the Astro Boy universe so I'm pretty sure Atom can't be dead lol. Unless this was taking place after Astro Boy, but I know absolutely nothing about Astro Boy so I can't make any educational guesses. Still I doubt he is dead. The story with Aldof getting more intertwined with Gesicht is getting pretty interesting as well. Some thoughts that Gesicht is able to kill humans are being floated. It's something I've definitely thought could be the case up till now.

This show couldn't have come out at a better time, now that AI's all the rage among techbros these days and only growing more sophisticated.

Regardless, I love how Urasawa's able to go on narrative tangents about what appear to be minor characters in the grand scheme of things and have me as invested in them as I am in the main story. He's an exceptional writer, on par with the likes of Alan Moore.
Take care of yourself
