Excel Saga and FLCL are similar in that they are both extremely random and fast-paced anime with a plot structure that is all over the place more often than not. Zany and wacky to the extreme, these are series that poke fun at virtually everything - with a special focus on pop culture and anime in particular. Both are parodies that mock themselves as well as several genres, FLCL mostly concerned with mecha and ES covering a gamut of genres from horror to romantic comedy. In both there is an endless quantity of references to other anime and manga, and the level of hyper insanity that makes FLCL a stunning visual fest is preserved in ES' energetic craziness.  read more

Very strange and funny thing with many references to other anime 

both extremly strange animes with randomness to the max every character in both shows (except for our main guy in FLCL) is totally messed up the main heroines in both shows are the same: weird, crazy and unpredictable but you can't help likeing them just a bit. if your into anime with barely any plot or plots thats too confusing, watch these shows. 

Okay so you think FLCL is insane, let me just say that Excel Saga takes the insanity of FLCL and brings it to a degree that was thought to be unreachable. Amazingly both are similar in that both try to experiment with different types of animation and genres. 

Both series feature off-the-wall craziness, crude humor, superb animation, and two of the wildest (and weirdest) heroines in anime. Light on story but heavy on the laughs, FLCL and Excel Saga are strikingly original and addicting in their own perversity.

they both have not very clear storylines. very unique characters. crazy gags. and they both have some anime parodies. 

High energy crazy editing beautiful surrealism 

Excel Saga is a joy to watch throughout the entire anime and is even crazier than FLCL but with a (little) more structure than it. In every episode, a new thing in entertainment is parodied, making every episode feel fresh and new. I highly suggest the English dub for the sheer craziness that the voice actor for Excel puts into her role. 

While Excel Saga is shorter and came before Gintama, they both have a sense of randomness and parody in them. Gintama more so due to its no. of episodes. much hilarity ensues. 

Parodies and random antics, author cameos and fourth wall breaks? You got it. Comedy that makes fun of tropes, censorship, politically correct, the viewers, their mothers, everything everyone everywhere? No kidding. Small, broke office managed by a silver-haired, good-for-nothing leader and a ravenous bottomless girl with a peculiarly cute dog? Rings a bell. Characters from wacky to insane, of varying degrees of idiocy, including aliens, robots and perverts? You name it. Futuristic Japan where delusional terrorists want to take over and blow up the status quo? Check. Action, death, politics, tuck the police? Double check. Catchy themes, epic seiyuu? Yeah. The story and themes are quite different, but both shows parody other anime series. They're both a bit random, but very funny. 

Both series has a strange sense of humor, break the four wall, good recap episodes and of course you can laugh a while.  

Both are high-energy, absurdist comedy anime that parody other series and every genre in existence and have the mangaka as a loser self-insert, a stairght man, ingrish, reference humour, naive alien girl character, a character who's constantly sick, a low-energy character, an overly serious villain who's treated as a joke and the similarities can be listed all day. 

Crazy comedy + parody  

Both are crazy parodies built upon randomness and slapstick humor. Also the main character roster is somewhat similar: blonde heroine, blue haired heroine, their boss/manager and a pet.

If you're a fan of the crude, and random, humor in Excel Saga (Especially in Ep 26) then you're sure to love Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt! Both are very fast paced and hilarious! 

While Excel Saga is much more out there and less crude than Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt, both series do quite the amount of have similarities. Excel Saga and Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt both have tons of parodies of a ton of stuff, and the set of main protagonists are similar as well. Both series have a duo of incompetent women (Excel and Hyatt/Panty and Stocking), the leader (Il Palazzo/Garterbelt) and the pet the girls terrorize to no end (Menchi/Chuck). I recommend both of these anime for people who want wacky AF anime parody comedies. 

Two shows with an eccentric and crude female duo as the main characters. The comedy in Excel Saga is more referential and nonsensical while in P&S it's more focused on being explicit and brazen, both are perfect examples of great slapstick humor.  

Two crazy anime series with seemingly little meaning aside entertaining those who are fans of crazy comedies and general nonsense. Also, both have extremely annoying opening themes. 

This is another hilarious/bloody/random/awsome comedy! Not to mention it has the all time greatest opening of all time! You just cant stop singing it! 

Dark humored anime aimed at a more mature audience. A lot of people die here, even the main characters, but they can be revived. They have a pretty simple plot, and they both parody genres. There are other people in the organization/other angels involved with the killing/randomness.  

Both of these series are based on a type of comedy that ... (how can I say this)... unusual. Bokusato Tenshi is the perfect Anime to laugh out loud while saying "WTF?!". 

There are many similarities between the two, namely frenetic absurd humour and lots of parodies. They are both somewhat of an aquired taste with some hit-and-miss humour and the plot taking very much of a back seat in both series.  

Both are hilarious and random. 

Both shows are two totally different stories yet have a very similar “out there”whacky and random comedy tone.  

These shows are both random and hilarious, and have tons of references to other anime. 

Comedy non-sense on its best. Though Abenobashi is far easier to understand and get on with. 

Excel Saga was rife with parodies and wacky over-the-top humor, and Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi delivers more of the same, taking on cliches from RPGs, sci-fi, old kung-fu flicks, and even American cinema. Much like Excel Saga, each episode picks a specific topic to focus on, and releases an onslaught of jokes and gags related to said topic. A very funny series. 

Both series have a very random feel to them and they both parody a lot of other anime and manga.  

Abonebashi is literally Excel Saga from Gainax, both are the most random shows, Gag humour, same atmosphere, both parody other series in an absurd way. 

More senseless violence, chaos and utter mayhem. 

Both series share an offbeat, sometimes hectic, black sense of humor. However Excel Saga focuses more on impulse, while Dai Mahou Touge uses sadism to deliver a punchline.

Both shows parody other anime series. They're both random, high-paced and very funny. 

Both anime have very strange and random humor. Especially random humor. The characters are arguably WAY TOO LOUD for both. Both have random parodies of other anime, movies, genres etc that are usually there more for the randomness than to be actual, clever parodies. (although this isn't true all the time with Excel Saga) 

this show is random and whack and if anyone loves excekl then they should definalty check out this wigging anime! 

Both feature considerably random humor and lampooning of common anime tropes. Definitely recommend for those not looking for a really serious plotline and just up for some fun. It helps if you know a little bit about other anime/Japanese culture as you will help understand the plots more. 

Both high-energy, fast-paced parodies/comedies. Excel Saga focuses much more heavily on parody than Binbougami-ga!, but the over the top style in both is very similar. 

Both have the same random, comical quality. Both are over-the-top and obnoxious. Both have the overly excited female main characters. Both make no sense. If you enjoyed one, you need to see the other. 

Both just make fun of everything the writer(s) can get their hands on. Anime character, genres, culture are just made fun of. 

Comedy, parody, black humor, eccentric characters, literally no plot. Many references to the otaku world and Japanese society. Lots of talking and signs/texts that randomly appear from nowhere (not for a short attention span). Cameos of the mangaka. Memorable music and voice acting. Both series deal with death, but the protagonists never actually die: while Nozomu constantly tries (and fails) to kill himself, several Excel Saga characters die (and come back to life) often, Hyatt above all. Excel Saga is more brutal and random, while SZS is set at school and has more slice of life moments, yet they are able to incorporate almost any genre. Watch them or I'll sue you! read more 

Both are satirical parody anime with lots of dark humor, references to pop culture and questionable jokes. Watch the other anime if that's your kind of humor. 

Do you like comedy anime ?? Do you like random anime ?? Then you will be like this... 

Both have very little for story, but are both Random and quite entertaining if you are looking for a funny anime to vedge to. (I recommend Excel Saga in English Dub, the text just zips right by when the main char. is speaking, lol) 

Both series have episodes that follow dramatically different themes from episode to episode, and are filled with comedy and absurdity. Kyouka reminds me a lot of Excel with her rapid elongated speaking style.  

Ah, mad comedy Endless parodies in jest Make me giggle hard 

Like Excel Saga, Miss Kuroitsu is a comedic series about a secret society that wants to take over the world. They both parody anime tropes and have a similar humorous tone. 

DG Charat appears in Excel Saga a couple of times (in ep. 23, for instance). Both are super random and funny anime. 

Similar humour, chaotic, not caring a bit for logic or common sense. In both those animes, you can sense how much fun people had making it, and how they likely had few restrictions as to what they could do. Watching Detroit Metal City reminded me instantly of the unbridled, laid-back laughter I had watching Excel saga. 

Not only are these two shows produced by the same people, various side characters make an appearance in both of these anime and much of the humor is very similar. Although they are not related, if you watch and enjoy one, you should definitely watch the other. 

Both SEEM like they're generic entries into their respective genres at first (Sci-Fi for Excel Saga, "Trapped in a Video game" for Ixion Saga DT), but once you watch the first episode of each, that notion is destroyed by how hilarious both anime are. 

Both are episodic series obviously aimed at hardcore otakus, have next to no plot, similar humor and the theme of cute girls acting like complete idiots. There's a lot of fast-paced violent slapstick and weird sex jokes in both, even though Excel Saga is a even more insane than this. 

Both of these great anime are funny in a totally random sense, and both kill off the main character just to be brought back... randomly. They both also do a good jib mocking aspects of anime. Also, the art style is similar.
