Both shows are very comical and make funny references to other anime and pop culture. They also have very obsessive female characters being obsessive toward an unwelcoming male and make light of very controversial issues.
Comedy, parody, eccentric characters, literally no plot. Many references to the otaku world and Japanese society. Lots of talking and signs/texts that randomly appear from nowhere (not for a short attention span). Fourth wall breaks. Cameos of the mangaka. Memorable music and voice acting.
Both series deal with death, but the protagonists never actually die: while Nozomu constantly tries (and fails) to kill himself, several Excel Saga characters die (and come back to life) often, Hyatt above all.
Excel Saga is more brutal and random, while SZS is set at school and has more slice of life moments, yet they are able to incorporate almost any genre.
