Both have two strong male leads, one of whom is from another country, and a colorful cast of supporting characters. Also, both involve a skating sport.
report Recommended by MarylandIzumiKun
Both series are focussed on the athletic development of males with a passion for their chosen sports. They take you on a journey with many obstacles to overcome with help from friends and rivals. Also, let your fangirl mind fill in the blanks left by shounen ai vibes throughout the episodes.

These two have very similar premises: Competing in a sport in which you are watched and judged based on your performance. Aesthetics, difficulty of moves, etc are all taken into account. They are both fun to watch, and unfortunately both sometimes suffer from too much of the same thing in the performances. Luckily, it's not too much of a hindrance, and if you enjoy one you will probably enjoy the other. Unless you only watched Yuri!! on Ice for the weird teacher x student "romance". You won't find that in Ballroom.

Episode 7 of both series convinced me to make a recommendation. If you're looking for something with a similar story-line or genre, I suggest you skip this one. YOI is sports and slice-of-life, while No.6 is is some kind of dystopian scifi action anime. However, when I watched YOI, I felt a familiar vibe and at first I couldn't really point what anime this reminded me off, till I scrolled past No.6. Both series have a heavy focus on the relationship and tension between the main-characters. Imo, No.6 was the only anime I knew, who found it's place between 'gay baiting' and official Shounen Ai, but I have  read more

A protagonist who wants to quit what he loves doing because of bad mental state, but gets motivated by his lov..I mean, friend, who supports him and helps him climb back to the top. Both have artists who create stories with their performance, and there is a lot of inner monologues. Yuri on Ice has less drama than Shigatsu.

These are both Sports animes with cute characters for the mc that fight for their goals, even when they don't believe in themselves. I know Yuri on Ice is pretty new, but when I saw it I was immediately reminded of haikyuu. Reasons why they are similar: -The art style is pretty and bright and colourful and new for both of them. -They are both boys sports animes -The main character is adorable

Both are cute anime with good animation which include a BL sub-trope although the main focus of the show is an artistic characteristic. None of them fetishize MLM nor are sexual, but they totally have a good development of the characters relationship. The soundtrack in both is amazing and the storyline too.
report Recommended by wtf_ihavenoname
They're both about competitive figure skating and include romance elements.

Same studio production, character styles are similar and they give off the same sort of feeling of fun and excitement, however Banana Fish goes on with a bit more intricate plot making you experience sadness as well.
report Recommended by Trimaya
Anime about ice-skating that might be perhaps too much focused on its bishounen characters - depending on your point of view. YoI goes more into relationship while Skate-Leading Stars contents itself with just presenting the pretty characters.

If you're looking for a good, subtle but obvious at the same time, boy's love narrative that isn't over the top and inherently sexual, both Yuri!!!on Ice and Doukyuusei can offer you that. Both of them have lovable characters, light hearted comedy and can at the same time play with your feelings like a toy.
report Recommended by niigromante
Lighthearted slice of life shows about professionals in their early twenties, at the top of their field but also stuck in a slump/downward spiral; the shows do detail their respective downfalls, but it's more about their redemption, and how they proceed to find inspiration and motivation again through the help of others, learning more about themselves along the way. Both deal with a pretty serious and anxiety-inducing theme, it's presented in a mature way with minimal melodrama. Positive and uplifting shows that leave you warm and fuzzy inside.

About the same general plot and storyline, almost finished athletes trying their best to get back to the top stage.

The Opening and the Ending reminds so much to Ping Pong each with a very characteristic beautiful animation. The fact that The protagonist has got an idol and does the same than him and in some point of the animation he could become better than his hero.
report Recommended by Geek_Boy
Both are exceptionally gripping slice-of-life anime produced by Studio MAPPA. Even though Sakamichi no Apollon concentrates on music and Yuri!!! on Ice focuses on figure skating as a competitive sport, friendship, love and growth are at the core of both stories. The main characters' passion for their work are conveyed very well in both shows. Chances are if you like one of the shows you are going to enjoy the other as well. Please give it a try!

While the sports themselves couldn't be more different, Oofuri and YoI both feature a protagonist who struggles with anxiety and low self-esteem despite his talent. Their character arcs are about dealing with their anxiety, gaining confidence, and finding support in the people around them. Not only do these shows handle mental illness really well, they also feature healthy, supportive, and positive relationships between the characters - although YoI has overt romance while Oofuri does not.
report Recommended by Neko-Hoshishima
Both revolve around artistic professional hobbies that are passionately depicted by the shows' creators. Those hobbies are used to emphasize the characters' emotions and stories. Also, both focus on the relationships between two very different adult men from the point-of-view of the more uptight one, and their relationships are built upon the inspiration that they give each other in their shared field. SGRS is definitely more serious, somber, and stylistic than YoI, but they both actually utilize similar themes and have plots that make heavy use of subtle character details and foreshadowing. A fan of one show may not necessarily like the other (e.g. SGRS  read more

Both anime address themes of queerness in a respectful way. They both stay outside the traditional boundaries of the yaoi/yuri genres.

For any fans of not just sports, but sports fans that can also understand the inside jokes, the mechanics of how fantastical the sport is, and to have fun with the main characters' sway of thinking.

Both shows feature competitions with a scrappy MC vs. a rival who's willing to give up their souls to win. Side characters have deep backstories. Both shows treat their subjects with love and care. LGBT themes. Oh and both shows start with viral videos!

Yuri on Ice (YOI) Hajime no Ippo (HNI) YOI and HNI are similar because they both are sports animes, have a very interesting main character who acts as the center of the story, but at the same time acts as a perspective. For example, in HNI, and YOI Ippo, and Yuri act as the standard of skill because we (the viewer) have seen them the most. Both characters suffer from some sort of anxiety in the beginning of the show and began to overcome it, for Yuri it is his performance anxiety, however for Ippo it is his quietnes  read more

Cheer Danshi is a Cheerleading sport anime about a bunch of hard working guys trying to make a Mancheerleading Squad. It's sorta inspiring... Different from "Yuri on Ice" when it comes to sport and relationship, and yes not as enchanting but!! I kept watching it Because it reminded me of "Yuri on ice". It really gived me a very close vibe! The anime is awesome and has a cool bunch of heartwarming characters. I really think you will like it either way! it's worth watching <3 <3

Two series with underdog main characters trying to succeed in a competitive field. Yuri aspires to be a great figure skater like his idol, but has a fragile mental focus and personal flaws that holds him back. Chiyuki aspires to be a runway model, but must overcome rejection from the industry because of her short height. Ikuto aspires to be a fashion designer, but is from a poor family and cannot justify pursuing this dream. Each character must overcome obstacles with the support of friends to improve themselves. Figure staking and fashion has a natural overlapping fanbase.

While watching a beautiful shounen-ai anime I'm always reminded of the most amazing anime I've watched, Yuri On Ice is one of those animes. Hitorijime My Hero touched my heart and so did Yuri On Ice. Both animes are sincere and have earned great respect from me so much that if a character were to cry, I would 100% cry aswell. Not many animes find their way into my heart because they don't have the emotional explosions that can make you smile or even cry but these two definitely do. Both animes are shounen ai. Kazuki has a pretty boy look like Viktor while Keita & Yuuri are mediocre compared to the people around them. The story & setting of the animes may not be alike but their are several elements that make both animes give off the same vibe. First, both Keita & Kazuki tries to belong in their community (new school/ skating competitors). Their motivation is the one they love and both their love interest are "supreme" in the story (like Viktor being the unbeaten champion). The love between the couple both started as platonic & admiration. In the process, their schoolmates/co-competitors helped  read more

Both are sports anime that focus on the psychological struggles of athletes, and the impact on their performance. They also focus on a lot of the hardships that professional athletes had to deal with, such as fan/team pressure

Both are yaoi, full of attractive pretty boys and based on sport. Yuri!!! is a lot more of a focus on butts and ice skating (obviously considering the title) where as Free! is based on a boys high school swim team and the friendships that stemmed from that. Both are lighthearted, pretty, fun and... russian men and shirtless guys, what more could you ask for?

Both series have serious moments full of comedy, making us feel determined.

Both focus on a one person sport, and the growth of the mc. Both have a coach that influenced this growth and show the connections with the other limited competitors. The growth of the other competitors is a bit more depicted in Dive!! though. If you like one you'll likely enjoy the other. :)

At first glance, these anime couldn't be more different from each other! Tutu is a special kind of mahou shoujo with emphasis on plot twists and a certain villain making the cast's lives difficult, whereas YOI is a sports that also features elements of LGBT, without crossing into yaoi territory. What unites both is dance and music; battles in Tutu are ones of drama and ballet, whereas Yuri on Ice features figure skating combinations. Both examples are essentially dance battles with conflicts of emotion on stake.

If you enjoy Re: Main, watch Yuri on Ice. Both are comedy filled, but intense sports animes. In Yuri on Ice, the MC overcomes challenges in his way to make it to the very top and earn a gold medal. This is a fan favorite that I believe you would enjoy. :)

Kai (Piano no Mori) and Yuri (Yuri!!! on Ice) are very different characters, but are shaped by their relationships with their mentors and rivals. Although Kai is a naturally gifted and confident pianist, his mentor helps him to unlock his full potential and introduces him to piano competitions. Yuri is an aging figure skater with anxiety problems, but his new coach unlocks his artistry and confidence. They are also greatly shaped by their admiration for their rivals - Yuri Plisetsky (Yuri!!! on Ice) and Shuuhei Amamiya (Piano no Mori). If these elements are the aspects that you enjoyed then you should consider this recommendation.

Both are short sports anime that do something a bit different than your average sport anime that non-sport anime fans could easily get into.

Both have : - Bromance is a thing - Music and dance choreography - Awesome animation and design. - Sport and challenging spirit.

(As Nihon Animator Mihonichi is collection of unrelated stories, this recommendation is only for episode 28.) Directed by same person, both are about ice skating, the characters are bishounen and the animation and visuals look very similar (including the derpy parts if paused).

Depthy research on the subject of each series (space exploration/competitive figure skating), and consistent themes of self improvement and friendship. Both titles display masterful renditions of character development and have excellent soundtracks, albeit there being significantly less fan service (and budget) in Uchuu Kyoudai.

Yet having different themes, the personality and the relationship between the main characters is quite the same: Shy protagonist who lacks self confidence meets someone that's everything they're not, and by a miracle, this someone start guiding shy protagonist into becoming a better version of themselves.

Honestly I'm slightly surprised nobody suggested Samumenco yet? When I look for recommendations, I don't want to find a series that feels like a carbon copy of the other one. I want to find one that shares the aspects of the show, that made me like the series. YOI and Samumenco couldn't be more different and at the same time, I'd wanted to inform fans (especially of YOI) about the other series. Let's be blunt. The main reason why I've been recommending Samurai Flamenco to a lot of YOI fans lately is because both handle canon LGBT themes, without applying to the shonen ai trope. Whereas YOI  read more

Despite being completely different at a first glance, KnC and Yuri!!! still have a lot in common. In both the protagonist is a beginner connected to art (figure skating is partially art, too) and tries to reach the victory and meanwhile learn to express him/herself through art. As the plots in KnC and Yuri!!! proceed, the protagonist and spectators discover some dramas in other characters' lives, so both titles have a bunch of touching moments along with comedy. And both have highly spirited perfomances accompanied by beautiful music.

Both Anime have a positive story about love. In Kyousou Giga it's mainly the family, in YOI there are more shapes of love. I can't find a villain in both stories, it's just about each character dealing with their inner problems.

Both shows have a strong focus on character and development, and are very character driven. While their competitive sports are an important part of each show, the characters and their relationships are the main driving forces. The characters are relatable, but also a little bit exaggerated - a little bit humorous - both in appearance and personality. Friendship and teamwork between 'enemies' is another major theme in both shows, where neither show has 'bad guys' or 'good guys' despite everyone competing very seriously. You want to cheer for everyone! Every character is interesting and has their own unique stories and relationships. I think if you  read more

Feel-good shows about talented people working their way out of a rut in their career/work/life/hobby with the help of people around them. Finding inspiration and motivation from the outside, and learning more about themselves in the process. One is about an early 20s professional ice-skater in Kyushu in the modern day, and one is a schoolgirl writer in late-Showa Tokyo.

A fallen career professional fights his way back to the top. Yuri on Ice is about a pro figure skater and Quan Zhi Gao Shou is about a pro gamer. Both are adults nearing the end of their professional life in their discipline and are looking for a way to find revive their career. Stylistically and presentation wise they're very different; but both are very ambitious with complex choreography and action, and the resulting CG is just as ugly whether it's made in China or made in Japan. Both leaves you with an uneasy feeling of incompleteness. Regardless of my criticisms, if you liked one for the profession-starting-again  read more

These are anime involving ice skating and are primarily popular with fans of Yaoi or Boys Love. King of Prism contrasts with Yuri on Ice primarily in the cheerfully colorful aesthetic and light-hearted feel with over-the-top comedic fanservice, whereas Yuri on Ice is much more dramatic and realistic as well as focused on professional figure skating and realistic relationships. Regardless of their differences, the boys of Yuri on Ice and King of Prism are definitely attractive and talented performance artists! Not to mention the music is awesome in either series.

Despite being 2 completely different animes with 2 different types of target audience, Keijo and Yuri on Ice manages to please the audience with the fanservice such as boobs + butts and yaoi + viktor being naked, respectively. Also, they involve the main characters doing something epic (Butt clash/Ice Skate) on a field.

Dance Dance Danseur and Yuri on Ice appeal to same type of crowd. Dance Dance Danseur is a anime about ballet and Yuri on Ice is an anime about figure skating. Dance Dance Danseur is likely going to be a better anime than Yuri on Ice because there is very good balance between storyline and ballet performances while showing you character development. Yuri on Ice rushed the storyline in favour of ice skating performances while showing you character development. Dance Dance Danseur might not receive the level of attention of Yuri on Ice, but it certainly deserves that attention.

I think that Yuri on ICE and Koisuru Boukun is very similar as they are both in the yaoi genre and both have a growing romance between the two leading males in both animes. Both animes brought me to tears! ( but im just an emotional guy :P) and even though Koisuru Boukun is a much shorter anime than yuri on ICE, it still has a similar story depth when it comes to the romance portion. So go give it a try <3
