Samurai Flamenco, Yuri!!! on Ice Recommendations
Honestly I'm slightly surprised nobody suggested Samumenco yet?
When I look for recommendations, I don't want to find a series that feels like a carbon copy of the other one. I want to find one that shares the aspects of the show, that made me like the series. YOI and Samumenco couldn't be more different and at the same time, I'd wanted to inform fans (especially of YOI) about the other series.
Let's be blunt. The main reason why I've been recommending Samurai Flamenco to a lot of YOI fans lately is because both handle canon LGBT themes, without applying to the shonen ai trope. Whereas YOI
is way more explicit and focused on this, you could eventually give Samumenco a shot too. Just don't be disappointed if you expected a Victuuri 2.
But honestly, reducing these series to the ships would be injustice on both sides. They have so much more to offer than just two characters of the same character being in love and yes, there are also similarities between those.
First of all, the characters in these series aren't you're average teenagers you get offered in most anime (all of them are in their twenties). Both Yoshi and Yuuri have a passion for something, that they seem to give up. Their passions are extremely different, yet at their core, you could compare them. The appearance of the second main character, influences their views on their own dreams drastically too.
Oh, and both of them can be described as surprising. The way they surprise you is very different tho. YOI offers you an unexpected amazing writing, while Samumenco switches gear and genre literally every episode.
And there's the character development. YOI has a way more realistic tone, but, both of them offer nicely developed characters. When I finished Menco, the first thing I noticed how well the mains grew as characters throughout the series.
Again. These are not incredibly alike. But as I said, when I look for recommendations, that's not the thing I'm searching for. I always try to suggest series where I can imagine you'll like them if you like the other one.
So give them a shot!
