Fully agree with all the others recommending Ippo. This is the nearest anime ever to the excitement and hero's journey that is played out in Ippo. Although one is boxing and the other is tennis, the methodical training, characters and epic moments are all there. It won't disappoint.

The main theme for both series is the realism. Main characters from both series are beginners in their sports. Hinata=Vollyball and Maruo=Tennis. They wil grow stronger throughout the series. Great characters who support the main characters. You will learn a great deal about said sport in both series. Currently airing this year.

Royoma in prince of tennis is a prodigy and practiced his whole life. He is smart and know's allot. Eiichirou has only done it for a year but has the skills to just like him. Just as goo as Royoma. The series is about both tennis prodigy's who shows them all wrong and practice to be stronger. Watch them both^^. The series is different with what kind of anime it is but there are both good to watch.

Both have characters that are Beginners to sports. Through sheer will and hard work the character improves quickly one is in racing bikes and the other in tennis. Both characters have something unique about them one is an otaku and one is an expert note taker. I really enjoy both and if you have seen one, you definitely want to see the other.

If you like anime where someone who knows nothing and gets introduced to a new concept which is interesting to watch, give these shows a try. Both shows actually have similar internal set up. In Baby Steps someone who knows almost nothing about tennis is introduced to the sport and in Ballroom main character gets introduced with the dancing world. Main characters are hardworking and have a power to pick up abilities so therefore it is very interesting to watch both of these series. Also there is a chance for romance, too because there are girls :D If you liked one, give another try as  read more

Both of these are relatively realistic sports anime with underlying romance. Neither has the best artwork, but don't let that stop you from giving them a chance, because they both have very good plots! :)

Both MC's are trying to be the best at what they love to do Both series involve friends that help the MC get better and become the best Both MC's are intelligent and try different ways to achieve their goal The two series have Romance, comedy, school life, elements

Although Baby Steps is about sports and Beck about music, the main characters are very similar in looks and personality : They both lack ''something in their life'', they are hardworkers and try to give their best once they find what they like. Also both shows have quite nicely added romance. Although the theme is different, the structure is similar. If you liked one, definitely check the other out.

Chihayafuru and Baby Steps give off a similar feeling as you're watching the show, in these series our main characters are joining a club, Karuta and Tennis. However, Chihayafuru is focused on Karuta, it is also largely focuses on romance.

It has the same realistic sport without any special moves, and the person(babysteps)/team(ookiku) on the anime is good not because some illogical elements. And its start from zero.

Baby Steps features a main character similar to Eijun Sawamura (from Diamond no Ace) by the name of Maruo Eiichiro. They are similar in that they are both diamonds in the rough in their respected sports but with hard work and dedication, they begin to make names for themselves. Note: Although Baby Steps has recently started (first episode came out on April 6, 2014), I have read most of the manga so that is how I am able to make this recommendation. I'll edit this as more episodes come out.

The main guy is another high-schooler who doesn't know anything about tennis at first but after some analysing of the sport, it seems he starts to get the hang of it? He doesn't improve from one day to another, that's why it's called Baby Steps.

They both consist of an MC who knows nothing about the sport at first. The MC Gradually improves in the sport through hard work and determination. MC makes friends by working hard and proving everyone wrong. Both MC's are quiet at first, but open up later on.
report Recommended by Dajoeman
Both characters start off not knowing a thing about the sport, in Ei-chan's case or the martial arts in Kenichi's, and then become increasingly more able at it. They both fall for a person who is also doing what they come to enjoy.

Even though both of them have different concept like in Baby Steps Tennis and in Gin no Saji Farming, both of them have similar characters and development, both MC enter a new world that they didn't know or have less knowledge of then little by little they gain knowledge and really work hard for it until they decided to pursue it for living.. they also accompany by a girl MC who is popular and really good at what they do and also help the MC. i find the character really similar maybe it just me but...oh well XD Maruo, Eiichirou = Hachiken, Yuugo (both smart, hard working  read more

Main characters who like to keep notebooks of everything that interests them? Welcome both of these series! The main characters are therefore both analytical and it's a nice change of pace to a normal Shounen main characters who usually don't like to think at all. Also both these series have nice love interests as well. Although I'd say it's more apparent in Baby Steps. Definitely check out Baby Steps if you like BNHA for those reasons :)

- Both series manage to tell about the competitive sports (Tennis / Soccer) in a realistic way. - Main characters have talent but they have to work hard in order to get better - One of the rare cases in sports series where potential love interest has impact on the story If you like Aoashi or Baby Steps for these reasons there's a high chance you could check out both.

Very similar animes in how they present themselves. - Great sports being played out almost every episode. - The strive to get better at the sport. - Love interest. - Comedy moments. Both are great animes. Watch Major through all the seasons to see a coming of age story. Baby Steps seems to stay in High School for now.

Both are sport anime with romance subplot. Both love interest in the respective romance are the reason the male main character started the sport in high school. The story in Baby Steps focuses on how the male main character grows as a tennis player through many different kind of training, while Hungry Heart focuses more on the male main character's acceptance of his bad experience in junior high and plays football again.

they both take an indepth look into their respective sport. not just from a high school perspective but as a profession.
report Recommended by kiawe
The protagonists in both series start late from square one and have to work hard in order to catch up to their peers. Both main characters have analytical minds and write their data in order to develop strategies. Their personality is similar as they are both "nerds" (Maruo with tennis and Midoriya with heroes).

Both main characters have similar incredible observation skills and ability to see and analyze everything in the game.

Similar romance vibes with the sport aspect, both aim to become professional tennis players

These shows have basically the same premise, a high schooler who does well in school but has no real purpose one day stumbles across an activity that they end up obsessing over, and hoping to go into professionally. While Baby Steps is more shounen and Blue Period is more seinen, I think that those who like one would probably enjoy the other. Both are also really good!

Both have a tennis theme. Both characters start out as the weakest link in their sport.

Both Baby Steps and One Outs have characters whom see the sport (Baby Steps-tennis/One Outs- baseball) as more then just simply a game. Though their view points are different, both are one of a kind. One Outs- MC breaks down and analyses the opponents to strategically defeat them psychologically Baby Steps- MC takes notes and breaks down the matches themselves and uses the data collected to improve himself mid game and relates to the information to improve himself in future matches

Both are about sport (tennis), where people join tennis club. Both have some comedy parts.

The main characters both start from "scratch." In Baby Steps, Maruo is a model A student, diligent in his studies and knows nothing of tennis. He begins tennis with the sole purpose of merely keeping his body in physical shape but it soon becomes his life. In Eyeshield, the main character: Kobayakawa Sena has recently entered high school with one thing in mind: to no longer be the school bullies' gopher. He gets corralled into playing American Football and begins his journey to reach the top. Both characters mature through the games they play and the training they receive.

Ei-Chan and Kaoru are both start a New hobby. Ei-Chan start to play tennis and Kaoru join a jazz band. Both Guy are smart. Both Guys are fall in love with the main girl.

They both are sports anime about the main character rising to the top. Filled with comedy relief and motivation. You just have to watch them!

Both Sport. Both Sports are very similar Both have protagonist reaching to be top of the world players. The stories do not take a similar path, so when watching another it does not feel like a repeat with a different theme, they radiate a different feeling.

Similarities: •BS is about a boy who is new to tennis but gradually improves over time. Similarly with GB as the main protagonist has a new job every episode (starts off inexperienced but gets better at it). •Both protagonists are somewhat similar (they are both smart, kind and determined to finish/improve on what they are doing). -They both also like to take notes so they'll know how to improve next time. •Has romance. Differences: •Baby Steps is a longer series (about 50 episodes) while Golden Boy is an OVA (6 episodes). •BS is based on tennis and improving at it while GB is about a guy having multiple  read more

Baby Steps and Suzuka (BS and SZK) are in very similiar genre, still they are very different- but this is recommendation so it will be better to start with those similiar 'things'. If you are looking for anime that is focused on SPORTS and ROMANCE eventually LOVE- go for both! BS and SZK shares a guy who has some own personality and starts doing sport because of the love for girl. In SZK MC goes for Track and Field club and in BS he goes for Tenis Club. Most of time they are in Club or School and there they are near to some girl who  read more

For both of the main characters a girl somehow becomes the reason they start the sport. Both shows have a realistic approach compared to most other sport anime. (baby steps has more though.) Neither show has great art/animation so if you don't mind one of the shows for that then the other shouldn't bug you in that regard. In baby steps the main character thinks and uses his head to make new plans in game while the mc of slam dunk doesn't think too much and seem to use his head too much and gets agitated easily. They both start out with disinterest of the sport.
