The main theme for both series is the realism. Main characters from both series are beginners in their sports. Hinata=Vollyball and Maruo=Tennis. They wil grow stronger throughout the series. Great characters who support the main characters. You will learn a great deal about said sport in both series. Currently airing this year.

Both series feature competitive sport and although they are of different nature has the same mood. The main male protagonist is part of a team/club. They get involved against other players/teams to test the limits of their abilities. There is a lot of realism in both series with no superpowers but rather relying on strategies, teamwork, guts, and instinct. I recommend both sport series for anyone interested in the sports genre with fun and competition.
Both of these sports anime make more of an attempt to be more realistic than something like Kuroko No Basket (or Prince of Tennis). (Even though they're a whole lot of fun to watch too :) Baby Steps has a few problems with the art, but if you can get past those, you'll find a great fast-paced story.

If you like realistic sports anime, with hardworking characters, who have to come up huge from being a relatively bad or not so good player, then this is something for you.
Both have loveable and really good developing characters, both have insanely good strategic aspects to the sport in them and both tell a competively story about their sport in a fashion, where you really don't want there to be an ending. But still, they are both really a must watch, if you are into sport anime.
Both of them are about someone new to a sport and works very hard to become better - Baby steps has a hint of romance in it, which haikyuu do not
25 episodes and more than 1 season. Steady character development and they're both animes about sport. Both series start with the main character not being particularly good at their sport. If you enjoy character development and watching the protagonists get stronger. Baby steps are definitely recommended.
Both anime are incredibly realistic and are exciting to watch. Both also share the aspect of showing us how the team trains and also develops their protagonist fantastically.

Both are very focused on the idea of a teenager joining a sport they have no knowledge of and falling in love with it. Both have great characters and story's about overcoming shortcomings and mental struggles. However if you do watch this sports anime be warned that it was discontinued, and you'll have to read the Baby Steps manga to get the full story.
