Both characters start off not knowing a thing about the sport, in Ei-chan's case or the martial arts in Kenichi's, and then become increasingly more able at it. They both fall for a person who is also doing what they come to enjoy.
Kenichi and Baby Steps are similar stories because both stories feature a main character that starts out as a novice in their respective fields, but soar to the top at an amazing speed.
While the leads learn more about their fields you as the viewer also learn more about the fields as well.
Oh and one final part to the recommendation - Both protagonists have a female lead that is already a master whether it is Martial Arts or Tennis. The female leads also lead towards romance in a sweet yet comedic way.
Both shows are just a lot of fun
