Hotarubi no Morie e is like a longer Natsume Yuujinchou episode without Nyanko-sensei.

Whilst the settings are rather different, both tales share the thread of a love which, although pure, innocent and routed for throughout by the viewer, there remains the sword of Damocles constantly hanging overhead, threatening to sever that thread at any moment. Both are tear-jerking love stories, worthy of anyone's time.
report Recommended by iamthesunset
Both are beautiful love stories with the same core theme: distance as a conflict. For 5 Centimeters per Second, this distance is a literal seperation, while in Hotarubi no Mori e, it is an emotional and psychological distance.

Both focused on the person, who can't live side by side with people because of circumstances. Both cause a calm and sadness

Both are movies talking about a human that encounters a resident of spirits, in Spirited away it's a town and in Hotarubi no Mori e it's a forest. In both a human girl becomes a friend with one of the spirits and later falls in love with it. Both are lovely supernatural stories.
report Recommended by OhanaNiArashi
Both of the anime are touching, also have a good story plot and will make you cry. These shows are more on supernatural and has a dramatic story and is worth watching and not time wasting.

Both are heart warming stories with sci-fi/ supernatural about a lively girl and her relationship with a boy. Both have a beautiful end.

They're both alike with the main characters, a yokai and a human. A romance and a sci-fi genres. In Kamisama Hajimemashita, a yokai became human's familiar. As time goes by, they both felll in love with each other beside the fact that a human and a yokai pair is a taboo. The movie Hotarubi no Mori e is about the human boy who became a yokai/spirit and a human girl who was once lost in a mountain of gods. This is only 44minute anime film. The story revolves around how the yokai fell in love with the girl knowing that they couldn't be with each other and  read more

Hal is like a longer but more boring version of Hotarubi no Mori e. They are both short, visually stunning movies with interesting characters and attractive story, setting, and plot. Both are fantasy/Sci-Fi, but focuses more on the slice of life. Both movies center on a male lead with traumatizing childhood and past experiences but meets a kind, loving, and naive female partner which brings significant changes to their miserable lives and how they value it. However Hal introduces certain unique plot-lines and twists unusual in a romance anime to compensate for its lack of emotional resonance and congenial/sympathetic characters which Hotarubi no Mori e has plenty  read more

The two movies have different settings (Hoshi wo Ou Kodomo shows another realm, while Hotarubi no Mori e is set in our world with a hint of fantasy) but still sound the same due to the fact that they both mix slice of life and fantasy. Besides, while being light and somewhat romantic both have a sad note, as both deal with another world that is harmed by humans (lost land and the world of spirits accordingly). Besides, both philosophize about distant love and death and are touching and somewhat sad. What's more, both movies have grasping art and show striking landscapes and sceneries. Dramatic anime where the main female protagonists gradually fall in love with a masked white haired male, though not necessarily fully human. Both anime focus on a mythological aspect and the "forbidden love" of the female and male protagonists. Great art for both anime and great story plot of a bittersweet romance, though Hotarubi no Mori e pulls more on your heart strings, the similarity and uniqueness of these anime prove they are both a must watch.

Both are very similar slow-paced anime movies where a girl finds a friend Youkai (or forest spirit), although Hotarubi has sadder ending.
report Recommended by PorcupineHead
Both are similar anime genre's where it has it's character that can't touch the girl in fear for pain or disappearing. Yet both characters love each other and want to touch one another but they endure to keep one another safe. I would highly recommend both shows for a teary touchy feely show.

They both feature carefully crafted, beautiful and tragic love stories that will make cry most people. They touch deep subjects in sutile ways and manage enormous development in their short duration. Both also are (almost) perfect in their presentation and execution.

Both are movies that describe the relationship between the boy and girl. They both have more bittersweet endings and have great storylines, and art.

the truth is that I never saw a picture with a story so simple and so good at the same time, Usagi Drop is one of those anime that you get a good idea how to be a father; I when I first look was very surprised by the fact that so trivial as this story I alla been like thus a good anime, highly recommended, if you lost faith and think everything is loli by here and there, sees Usagi Drop and recover faith in humanity (light Japanese)

Both of these anime deal with the longing and melancholy that surrounds a love just out of reach. Through learning to love someone else the protagonists learn how to live life to its fullest.

Both explore the theme of two characters who are in love but may never physically touch one another.

Tears, tears, tears, and more tears. Both have ethereal and bittersweet romance, Although settings are a bit different, one is school and a TV show, thus more time to develop, while hotarubi is a movie, but trust me, a beautifully worded and animated one. Not for people who want happy ever afters, although tragedies can also be beautiful in their own ways.

-Gin of Hotarubi no Mori e and the entire Sohma family in Fruits Basket have the same curse that doesn't allow them to be hugged by humans. -The heroines are both clumsy, silly, stronger than they appear, and strive to not be a burden to anyone. (Hotaru and Tohru also look almost identical as children, and as teenagers Hotaru looks just like Tohru but with shorter hair. Even their names sound similar.) They also both struggle with the curse of their loved ones. -Both anime incorporate Japanese folklore, legends, and other spiritual elements. -Gin is a lot like Yuuki, personality-wise and appearance-wise. -Both anime are tearjerkers.

Auto-conclusive movies and yet masterpieces. Both have gorgeous art and colors, great romantic, fantasy and supernatural stories. Both are two pearls of japanese animation. They both can give you this relaxing calm feeling, and as well melancholic at the same time. Just a word to describe them: Beautiful. In addition, Arrietty has splendid music.

Both deal with romance with the supernatural. Although Ookami is more on what happens after the romance, the two share the same ambiance. Both stories are lighthearted and simple, but deliver relatively strong emotions.

Not only do Natsume Yuujinchou and Hotarubi no Mori e have the same original creator and similar setting, they are animated by the same studio, with the same director and even the composer is the same. Without any doubt there is more than one that these two would both be liked by the same people. The girl, Hotaru, in Hotarubi no More e and the boy, Takashi (mostly referred to by his family name Natsume), both see demon and spirits and they both befriend them. Both the film and the series play with a melancholic feeling and the relationship between humans and spirits.

Ok, this is my first time writing one of these, so I hope it comes out alright. Although the plots are completely different - Mononoke Hime being more like the epic adventure type, this one being the touchy, makes-you-cry kind of short movie - they share common themes such as spirits, mountain gods and sacred forests. Both have slightly romantic atmospheres to them ('Hotarubi no Mori e' is a shoujo anime, so it's natural it develops more towards a love story than 'Mononoke Hime', in which the "love" depicted is more like admiration from one part). In other words, both revolve around ancient traditional Japanese  read more

The Movie follows a little girl growing with a spirit in the forest of the shrine in her grandfather's town. It has the attachment, SOL, feels-trip that you might be looking for. *Not guaranteed to make you cry just guaranteed to make you smile*

Into the Forest of Fireflies' Light and Ride Your Wave are romantic tragedy movies involving the supernatural. Hinako (Ride Your Wave) is a young girl who is unable to overcome the loss of her dead boyfriend and decides to continue her relationship with his spirit. Hotaru (Into the Forest of Fireflies' Light) is a young girl who falls in love with a yokai, but is unable to touch him or be with him on a daily basis. Both movies have emotional stories that touch upon greater themes like growing up and living life.

To me, it has a similar feeling of encounter between a human and a somehow surnatural person, who can not live together. Hotarubi no Mori e is much simpler that the whole unique world created in this movie but there is the same theme of an inaccessible and lonely person who can not love someone.

Both are short bittersweet stories that are executed in beautiful ways with unique characters and awesome music.

Both have this setting of super natural (yokai and kami) and present a similar conflict between human and yokai/kami. I am sure you can enjoy this short series too.

1: Unconventional Companionships: Both anime explore the beauty of friendships that transcend conventional boundaries. In "Somali and the Forest Spirit," the gentle relationship between a golem guardian and a human child blossoms, while "Hotarubi no Mori e" weaves a tender connection between a girl and a forest spirit. The way these relationships develop and the emotions they evoke are central to both stories. 2: Emotional Journeys: "Somali and the Forest Spirit" and "Hotarubi no Mori e" take viewers on emotional journeys that resonate on a profound level. While "Somali" emphasizes the father-daughter dynamic between the golem and Somali, "Hotarubi" explores the bittersweet love between the girl and the  read more

This is a must-see if you're a fan of hotarubi no mori e.Seriously,It gives you the same feeling and yes,I'm saying that you'll cry ur heart out 😭😭.The similarities is where there's spiritual concept in both stories(the main characters are basically spirits). Tokyo magnitude is more realistic, like thing that could actually happen .Anyway, both stories are great.Totally worth it !!

Japanese folklore-inspired supernatural beings interact with humans in a softer way than their origin myths. A blend of sweet summer nostalgia and sadness, longing, and explorations of death.

Both are movie with short duration of time. The way story told is very similar. Start with a scene that happened in the middle of story, then go back to the beginning if the story. The story continues telling how the main characters get closer spending the time together until something major happened to them. However, Hotarubi no Mori e has clearer ending and better emotion lifting scene.

-the beloved is/becomes a ghost -the protagonist experiences a tragically ended love -but must overcome the tragedy in all her strength -even though their time together was like a happy fairytale.

Both anime feature a young girl as main character and her connection to the spirits of a specific forest. Hotarubi no mori e is romantic and focusing more on the connection, while Miyori no mori is more about finding one's place in the world.

Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora is about a teenage boy who contracts Hep A and ends up in the hospital, isolated from his family and friends. He meets another patient, a beautiful moody teenage girl, and they grow closer, but she doesn't have much time left to live. Hotarubi no Mori e is about a young girl who gets lost in a magical forest and meets a spirit, who she is not allowed to touch or he'll disappear. Both are tragic love stories, and are heart-wrenching to watch.

"Perhaps we said goodbye. Though not a single thing will have been lost. For the memory of the days I spent with you will always comfort me. I hope you're well, wherever you are." Bittersweet quiet stories about saying goodbye. Hotarubi is a film and Tabimachi are 4 short episodes. If you liked one, you'll like the other.

Both are about spirits and beautiful romance. In both anime the girl falls in love with a spirit, Harukanaru although the movie is longer, the romance is deeper with beautiful graphics and plot. Hotarubi has drama just like Harukanaru, where you will shed tears. The differences are that in Harukanaru there are more characters involving around the female protagonist while in Hotarubi there are little minor characters

Both have a bit of mono no aware, and focus on protagonists who don't age. While Yokohama was made over a decade ago, its animation is subtly beautiful, just as Hotarubi no Mori's is.

Although Hotarubi no Mori e is a movie and Kyoukai no Rinne is a TV series, I noticed that, while I was watching Kyoukai no Rinne, the atmosphere, setting, as well as the story reminded me a lot of Hotarubi no Mori e! In my opinion, if you like Hotarubi no Mori e you are going to like Kyoukai no Rinne and if you likes Kyoukai no Rinne you will find yourself enjoying the atmosphere of Hotarubi no Mori e, although it's not as lighthearted as Kyoukai no Rinne!
