The animation for this show is pretty impressive. I'm not a geek when it comes to mecha design, I dont care about new iterations of the Enterprise in Trek, etc, etc, but I really like the new version of White Base, its all sleek like a bullet. A bullet I tells ya. I like the new Gundams too.

Captain Synapse. Gundam continues its trend of having the most ridiculous names in anime.

If only more people would take some notes from Gato on how to steal a Gundam. Walk in, take the Gundam (ask for directions if you get lost - this is Gundam level security we're talking about) and then start blowing shit up.

Wow this was certainly one of the most artistically amazing Gundams I've seen.

The story looks like it is simple and interesting enough and the characters so far are OK.

That female mechanic totally sparked my femdom side. Puny Keith has no idea what he's missing.

Much like 0080, I'm digging the animation of these OVAs. As for the rest, it was pretty... mediocre. Nothing amazing to praise, nothing ridiculous to make fun of (other than Gato calling dibs on the Gundam).

WTF? Are this people in their right mind? Did they just loaded a nuclear warhead on a Gundam? Why would they do that? Are they completely crazy? You never do such a thing except if you actually gonna use it. Did they never heart of a dummy?
Do they make their exercises with real ammo too?

Anyway other than that, it is quite a nice looking anime. Especially seeing the date it was made it's unbelievable. Artwork and animation at it's finest.

The story kept me curious, besides being too obvious (Zeon rebels x Federation). This invasion was ridiculous, but it's better than the ones in Zeta.

I'd go as far as to say the animation is timeless. It looks great even today.

That was a very blood pumping start. Also, I freaking loved the music, ED and I know the OP already, which is awesome too.

All in all this looks like a nice 13 episodes of pure entertainment, full of quality production wise.

That Anaheim Electronics lady looked pretty hot in that officer suit, damn

I agree with the others, White Base 2.0 was darn awesome looking.

I love the female mechanic's appearance. I love women like her when they scare the forceful guys, I hope she sticks around.

The ED is terrible. Totally unfitting, imo, for a show about giant robots killing each other.

Start was pretty fast paced and the directing feels more like war in the pocket than the tomino gundams which i prefer, this series has potential, looking forword to the rest

You shittin me.

In Zeta, 2 fucking toddlers manage to steal a Gundam.

It's just par for the course at this point. There's a reason that the "Grand Theft Prototype" page on tvtropes not only has a subfolder just for Gundam, but used to be named "Gundamjack".

Can't believe it took me awhile to start this, but i plan on finishing it in one day.

Also this can't be a Gundam UC series without someone stealing it XD

Unit 1 really looks like an improved version of Gundam RX-78-2.

Gato is hype as hell!! Favorite Seiyuu Otsuka Akio is voicing him :)

He's already becoming one of my favorite character in the whole franchise. Definitely on par with Char and Zechs :D

Eh, just because you don't recognize a superior officer, you don't instantly think of him as a spy. That would be too ridiculous. And it happened too fast for someone to even realize who Gato was. He went right for the Gundam anyway, not like he was messing around the base.

The start was alright, pretty likeable characters on both sides, setting is interesting as well. The art quality was pretty good, especially on the mechanical designs.

An exciting and promising first episode. The OAVs budget allows Yasuhiko's chara-designs to be truly beautiful on screen. The test sequence was pretty and the inserted song won me over in a few seconds (exactly like Venus Wars). The mechanics all look very good (probably thanks to Mr.Kawajiri). Drawings, musics,
The japanese guy doesn't seem interesting at first but Keith made up for his pal.
When I saw the two Gundam, I had difficulties to imagine any possible challenge against a little troop of Zeon remnants. But the steal gave me hope. About that: that was... incredibly stupid and still so great when this Gato guy came in in a EFF uniform, asked nonchalantly a question and then just hooped in the heavy Gundam to take it for a walk: he IS the one successful Gundam stealer! (after two failures) xD By the way, since when does one load real nuclear heads in a weapon TEST ?! That's crazy, even in a Mad Max Australia.

4/5

The ending song is so out-of-place I laughed after the first sentences.

Also, Synapse? XD

Apparently the scriptwriters made a point of pushing the Earth Feddies' stupidity as far as humanly possible. As if their ridiculously low security wasn't already hard enough to swallow.

That's just me bitching though, cause overall I found the episode quite enjoyable. However I fear that Nina is going to be one of those Gundam females I don't like at all but who get much more screentime than they deserve regardless.

that's just MAL's weird classification. The two OVA series have nothing in common aside from the similar way their titles are written and the fact that they both belong to the UC timeline. It's like saying 8th MS Team is also a prequel to 0083 simply because it happens before it: all these stories are completely independant from one another.

The OVAs are really meant to be seen as complements to the main UC titles (namely Mobile Suit Gundam for WitP and 8th MS Team, and a bridge between 0079 and Zeta for Stardust Memory) rather than prequels or sequels to each other.

I don't really see them as independent to be honest, they're all in the same universe in different time periods following each other up, if you're basing it strictly on the chronological timeline of the series they are the prequel/sequel of each other. And while they might have their completely own story and set of characters, the overall setting is still relevant to the franchise and therefore does classify as a prequel sequel rather than a sidestory/alternative setting/spinoff or alike.

As you said as they form a "bridge" for the "main" series, they're on their own the prequel/sequel to those "main" series.

Yes, but they're not prequels or sequels to each other specifically. Their relation to the main UC titles is what counts, not the one they have to each other (because there's none).
What I mean is calling WitP a prequel to Stardust Memory is misguided in the sense that the 0083 OVA is not a continuation of the 0080 one in any way whatsoever: you don't need to have watched the latter to appreciate the former, but having at least completed 0079 is mandatory.

Since it is a prequel to Z Gundam, I had to see it for completeness. Excellent graphics due to the fact of being in OVA format, other than CG, hand-made drawings, are the greatest.
Narration well managed, although I agree with those who say that when they steal the Gundam, it's ridiculous the way they do.
I also agree that use of the names for the characters a little too ridiculous, oh well!
The soundtrack is really good, I'm satisfied with what I saw in this first episode.

Superb animation and mecha porn, hilarious names as always, top-level Gundam security, etc.

When the spy was riding in the desert, I like how his car "jumped" on the terrain all the time. Nice detail, looked awesome and realistic.

Our main hero Kou seems to have a pretty generic gesign, just like with 08th MS team. For some reason the secondary characters have more distinct facial features than the main ones.

I lost it when after a heated battle with a Gundam loaded with a nuke I heard a love song xD Well, gotta wait for the drama, I guess.

Shoji Kawamori of Macross fame did mechanical designs on this one, cool.
And just look at the positions Shinichiro Watanabe is credited for! O_O

P.S. Why did the Zakus at the beginning were marked with red after being shot? A way to evaluate a pilot's performance in a test battle? (e.g. how much was he hit).

Earth federation, except for newtypes and white base, is a bunch of incompetents as is hinted in basically any of the early series. They literally won only because of Amuro/White Base, they would have been swooped by Zeon without them

@Beatnik Hello fellow 'ancient' MAL user :) I have the opposite. When i first watched it having only see the original at that point i didn't appreciate it as much as now when i'm doing a run in order of timeline placement. I like that the characters don't stand out that much, makes it seem like just normal people in the bigger picture which really makes the world seem huge in comparison to just the main players (had the same with MS08). Makes it seem like it could all happen in real life, which makes me enjoy the world-building of the timeline that much more. The villains i found quite enjoyable, like in the original you just see the Zeon soldiers are a lot more competent and ruthless than the Federation, and this series really brings that home. It really was a few amazing characters that won the Federation the war. It's refreshing to have an enemy who keeps trying to find ways to continue on instead the unusual 'and it all ended well' when a war is over. We still have areas in the real world where rebels from older regimes or other groups control huge swats of land that the regime in power can't do anything about.
