Just make sure you don't make the mistake I did and watch the one with updated subs that came out a couple months ago.

Watched the Yakuza stage play, and it proves the movie could have worked as a more straightforward adaptation. Was a really fun watch and it was cool the way they adapted stuff from the game. Like goddamn, they recreate the way fights end on that final blow. And of course we get a great Majima actor.

I'm already imaging an Akiyama and Saejima spinoff down the line. Bring back the OG new protagonists as playable. Things like that Ryuji prequel game rumoured a few years back, or that Kuze prequel I see some wanting, seem more viable now too. Shit, maybe even Tanimura has like a 1% chance of returning now.

A Majima gaiden ain't surprising, but a pirate game that's apparently canon is. It's no Judgement 3, but looking forward to returning to Hawaii in The Man Who Forgot His Name.

Finished Infinite Wealth, and yeah, I agree that the gameplay is a good step up, but the story was pretty weak. Like there's a bunch of interesting points there, but they don't get as much focus as they should or need to really work. With dividing the parties I like the opportunity to switch it up and it gets around a bit the issue of having too many characters to chose from, but at the cost of letting them all interact. A bit odd how deep in before the split too, makes me wonder if they initially planned to keep it to that initial Hawaii set, not to mention how late you get Joongi. Can't exactly ignore the old party (minus Eri) like Kiryu's revolving cast of companions though, and you can see how they gave themselves a good out with Tomizawa and Chitose to deal with that for 9.

Honolulu was a great location though, and was nice to explore an area that's a bit familiar to me, just seeing an ABC store in the demo made me smile. With that Sugiura cameo, here's hoping for Judgement Hawaii Five-0. Kiryu reminiscing was some good stuff (Dead Souls mentioned), wish there had been a bit more though. Like damn, some of the hardest hitting emotional moments. Speaking of, Hanawa getting killed after going through everything in Gaiden was a downer. RIP Morinaga again, at least it wasn't offscreen this time.

BTW, first Yakuza game I've gone into with actual mahjong knowledge.

Meanwhile I finally got around to watching the movie and prologue.

Prologue was a nice addition to the game, and pretty meaty for its short runtime. Also more of an actual prequel than 0. Not just Yumi screentime, but Nishiki's sister too. Really makes you wonder why 0 didn't have that.

The movie was certainly an interesting choice with what they did. Like I get what they were going for with all those subplots, but that still begs the question of why they would do that and devote so much time to them over the actual game story. Still was some decent fun, and glad I checked it out. Gotta say those actors got the characters pretty spot on and it did feel true to the tone of the game. Seeing Kiryu just use a health item for the final fight was also unreasonably hype.

Beat Gaiden a few days ago, now that was a much more fitting final boss to send off with than 6. Using the agent style, couldn't help but think that I could easily see a variation of it in Judgement. At least giving drones attacks at a minimum, particularly if they make Sugiura a protag. Which speaking of, letting you play as other characters in the coliseum is something I've wanted to see for a while, so cool to see it realised, even if it's on the basic side. Really shows that if they gave Kaito Files some side stuff to work with that it would have felt like a full fledged title as well. Feels weird calling this one short when I got over 30 hours out of it.

Also unrelated, but, holy shit, someone is actually translating the batshit Resident Evil manhua.

Haven't gotten around to it yet, but with the revelation of that one plot point in 8, the Kiryu shilling between the two seems more palatable in retrospect, since they might be his last hurrah for real this time and actually let Ichiban be our new protagonist.

Finished Ishin, how it took so long for such a banger to get an English release is a crime, but at least it happened. Gotta say, I was rolling my eyes a bit when it looked like they were sticking to the "never killed anyone" meme, which just made it hit all the harder when Sakakmoto actually started straight up killing, no excuses, no technicalities.

BTW, with 8 marketing itself as dual playable protagonists, here's my idea that I know will never happen. We get turn based combat as Ichiban and beat em up combat as Kiryu.

Alright, I was not expecting Kiryu to get some Spider-Man gadgets.
