In my personal and irrelevant opinion, this first episode was neither good nor bad. Nonetheless, as I'd hoped wouldn't be the case after seeing the preview, Violet Evergarden tries too hard to be beautiful, and it's careful to the point of contrivance. A pen can't just fall; it must fall beautifully. When the wind blows, things must be beautifully whisked away to the sound of mournful violin strings. Everything is a dramatic event accentuated by gaudy, low-contrast visuals. Beyond the animation—by "animation" I mean the key and in-between work, which is undoubtedly good—little else feels inspired.

This show clearly isn't for me. Rather than whine every week about things I don't like, I'm just going to drop it. If you enjoyed it, I hope you continue to do so.

We respect your opinion, I do this often.
Just don't give it a 1 and run away.

Yes. It was beautiful (The art, animation, OST, even the subtle characters development).
I mean look its good but i was expecting Lain or GITS level of amazing based on the hype.

Hopefully a few more episodes will dive further into the plot

It's finally out...!

That was a pretty aesthetic first episode. Really great music and atmosphere. I was on the hype train super early for this show and while it wasn't as mind blowing a start as I was expecting, it was still very good. Looking forward to the next one.

I was more hyped because of the concept and more regarding on how this kind of resonates with me to an degree.

But that's just me.

On Topic: Just got episode 1 done and I'm actually intrigued from the series and how it presents itself.

It's more of an introduction if you ask me, but it isn't that bad either. It's a good way to start rather than going to the dramatic point and then going overblown with it. I like the characters and the concept of the story, while not something special I do like how it portrayed itself. Which is good.

We got an idea how Violet got through her shit during war I guess? Not only that, but the show leaves a more mysterious look to it to the mix, which is good to see. Expressions aren't really taken away as it shows the characters and give them life to it.

As for the Visuals yeah, I do kinda agree its kinda overboard? But at the same time to me this looks like something that came out of an movie production, rather than a TV production, so they essentially let things go out all the way beyond what the staff and the studio has done previously, which in my opinion this is probably the most pleasing anime to watch when it comes to Visual directing, as expected from the person behind this and its style.

I do hope that as the series progresses it builds more than what we have, but so far I'm good with this if you ask me.

I don't care about pretty color stuff (and bunch of crappy CGI) at all, but this anime can be good with all the lifestyle transition from war and stuff, but Violet just really really bother me. Her whole character is way way too over dramatized and unrealistic with all the very machine/robot/stiff composure, 0 social skill/common sense and her overall autistic behavior. She is going to ruin the whole anime, worst kuudere i've ever seen.

Also minor thing, It bothers me how Hoggins keep shouting "Violet-chan!" when it's obviously set in fictional britain or old europe, totally unfitting.

People on MAL refuse to actually enjoy watching anime.

Fuck the hype. That doesn't matter. I hate hype.

This was a beautifully done episode and I was completely blown away by how gorgeous every bit of it was. The premise seems well-thought-out and I'm absolutely looking forward to the rest of the series.

I couldn't possibly expect everyone to agree that Violet Evergarden is going to save anime, but criticizing it because of advance praise is just as stupid as jumping on the hype bandwagon. Facile negative review comments are pretty worthless.

Criticizing it because you just don't like the story, the adaptation from the LN, or because of the animation quality or other production values (lol, because seriously this is top-level quality) then I definitely think it's useful to do so.

The filters are a bit much.
I sort of wish they waited awhile to show the scene between the guy and Violet. It seemed really emotional but I was unfazed, since I have no emotional connection to the characters. It should've been built up towards that part, to get the audience to care about the characters.
Speaking of, Violet seems really boring so far, a generic, born-to-be-a-tool kuudere.
I do want to see more of Hodgins, he could be top-tier husbando material.

I don't know if this is an 8.88 first episode, more like a 8.3 or 7.9 if anything else.
It was still pretty damn good.

KyoAni got the artstyle on point and movement is very fluid and postures aren't overly stiff.

The intro to Violet was very impactful, providing insight into her character with flashbacks and her current life, making for a rather nice balance.
This piece immediately invokes memories from Planetarian and Harmonia because of the main Robot girl.(Although, I'm not 100% sure on that.)
Hopefully it ends better than those two.

I'm curious as to how the story will turn out.
Will it be the episodic happenings of Violet?
Will it be a character story and focus on the growth and humanization of Violet?
Will there be some new conflict like another war driving on the story?
Will it be a mix of all of these things?
Only time will tell.

Hi, this is fucking amazing, bye.

No seriously, I think I love this episode for very similar if not the exact same reasons @aikaflip didn't like it. Everything is aesthetically relevant, everything is embellished, everything wants to transcend. It captures the feeling of a classic epic or melodrama so much and so well I was enthralled the whole experience. The visual care is of course the highlight (pun intended) with the animation, the colouring, the gestures and positions and the shot composition. It feels overall as a gorgeous cinematographic experience. But I also loved the pacing and the narrative, so quiet and yet so solid, it flows perfectly and it's honestly one of the most immersive experiences I've had with anime in a while.

My one defense of Violet Evergarden's affect (i.e. is she a kuudere, autistic, just flat/emotionless), is that she's pretty obviously experiencing severe PTSD, or what in those days one would call shell-shock. I think the episode was very clear in setting up the explanation for her lack of emotion. It's especially good that the whole point of the show is that she doesn't want to continue to be that way, and I assume that the main goal of the series is to follow her emotional development. The point is that Violet is not just going to be a kuudere trope, but a character who grows and changes (at least I certainly hope so).

How exactly did people come to the conclusion by watching this that Violet didn't feel or express any emotion? She did plenty, both in flashbacks and in the current timeline.

I would like to think it's because all of her emotions are centered around anything to do with Gilbert who took care of her. The fact that she was once called the dog of Gilbert by Gilbert's older brother makes me think she never really got any affection from others. Even Claudia kind of apologized for how he averted his eyes away from her in the past and wants to make amends for that and hence he shows such kindness to her.

I have also noticed that she is either institutionalized or is severely suffering from all the violence she had been exposed to in a battlefield. It's not unnatural yet a group of viewers seem to shut their brain and watch this anime.

However, from my experience, it must be more to do with Kyoto Animation than the anime itself. If this anime was produced by Production I.G. or Bones or MADHOUSE fans would have reacted differently.

The atmosphere of this show was enchanting - sad yet at peace. Since I tend to prefer action and adventure (read: I don't really like KyoAni), I was impressed to find myself okay with just basking in it instead of anticipating the next story point. Basically, the art and music were so beautiful that I was happy to see anything.

I like the characters and romance. It isn't anything we haven't seen before, but I believed the interactions I was seeing. I don't disagree with people who found the pace slow, but I challenge what scene they found pointless and would have cut, because there were none for me. Therefore it wasn't slow to me - it was thoughtful and realistic. It took its time to build. It felt like a beginning.

Strongest opening episode I've seen since Made in Abyss. 10/10.

Edit: My biggest complaint would be that delivery boy's random "aesthetic" long strand of hair. Like it actually took me out of the story. Kept imagining kyoani character designers jerking themselves off cause they couldn't resist making this dude look *~anime special~*

After the first trailer blown me away, I came expecting the greatness. Well, the art is definitely the most beautiful thing I have seen in a really long while to the point that I don't remember... as for story though... well, I won't say it's disappointing but it's rather not really my type of a series.

Generally I do watch a anime like this from time to time but it's not type of the story that I would get heavily invested in or get too excited over because from the look of it, isn't this going to be simple slice of life series with extra drama? This first episode was supposed to have quite a few sad moments but nope they didn't get me at all because all those sad flashbacks is something that I already seen before. Just the fact that the pretty girl was forced to take part in wars and seen her senpai die/be injured doesn't get me at all nowadays.

Nonetheless this is the series I was hyped about so I will definitely watch it till the end as even if story goes meh, the sole fact that Kyoani is putting in this budget to make it the absolute eye candy is worth to watch it... because truly this show is too beautiful and Violet in particular is pretty much best girl (visually) that I seen in a while.

It's finally here and it's definitely a gorgeous anime, but so far it's the only thing this anime has going for it. Given that we're only one episode in, I will withhold any opinions about the story until I've seen more of it, but this first episode wasn't anything special. This is a perfect example of why too much hype is never a good thing.

Animation is nice and detailed, but I couldn't get myself invested with Violet herself. The answer to her 'what is love' ordeal doesn't seem like it would have a huge payoff and I hope it doesn't take the whole season to get to that point.

---------- This post contains some spoilers -------------------------------------------------
One of the things that most drew attention in this anime, before its debut, was its animation (and perhaps its history). But with the release of episode 1, the quality of the animation kept up (which many people were wondering if it was going to happen), it was also possible to notice an OST that appears at the right time and fits perfectly with what is happening in the scene. The story about "Violet" (protagonist) takes its first steps here, establishing "what happened before" and "what will happen" now, after the war. I'm excited to see how the story unfolds, as the "romance" between "Major Gilbert" and Violet will "strengthen" and how the stories that the protagonist of the series will meet will help her discover what it means "I love you".

It is still too early to state anything permanent about "Violet Evergarden", my opinions may change over the course of the episodes being released.

welp, I guess it's the first rule of selling things, make the advertising (PV) as nice as possible so that people intrigue to buy (watch) it. This is just like that, the animation is good, but it's definietly not the kind of animation PV was, lol

to put it bluntly, I find this rather boring, need to pause a few times before I actually finish the episode, hence not worth the hype for me... I hope this impression change in the future episode tho

I did not have any hype for this anime beforehand, but wow what a boring first episode. It felt like they where playing the same song throughout the entire episode with no variety whatsoever. Every character that's not Violet lacks any depth, and the character of Violet was made in a way that makes it seem that she was created only to be generic kuudere waifu material. This episode tries way too hard to seem meaningful and good, while its actually boring with nothing going on. The animation on the characters is really well done, but the detail in the backgrounds was heavily lacking and was drowned by the heavy use of CG filters.

I cant see why this anime is in the top 50 highest rated anime on the website by just the first episode

It was quite beautiful anime, no doubt about that. But the storytelling was flat. The characterization was quite non-existant, & the script was a bit much on exposition. And the cinematography was weird. It's like the director wanted to show how beautiful every scene is & not so much about the story. Sometimes it was good, but most were just kind of masturbatory shot.
