it's just where the manga was releasing. Nana is shoujo but it should be josei, chainsaw man is also a shounen but it's too brutal for boys. He meant battle shounen which is a genre where big 3, hxh, DB or even the new dandadan might be included.

Such a dumb statement. Apparently, you're the one in charge of deciding what the genre of a series should be. Nana is a shoujo and will always be a shoujo. It doesn't matter if you think it should be josei. The targeted audience of Nana is teenage girls, so it's a shoujo series. Frieren, Chainsaw Man, and Attack on Titan are also shounen, regardless of what people think. Their main audience is, in fact, teenage boys, despite the gory content. Some people just can't accept that their favorite series is a shounen or a shoujo because they want to be seen as more mature.

Shounen can tackle mature themes if done correctly. All of those series I mentioned are shounen/shoujo, yet they are still great and able to craft some of the best moments in fiction. Stop misjudging or underestimating shounen series.

I don’t think target audience even matters in the end. I literally think the authors just roll a dice and apply for whatever genre of magazines they might get in with and see what happens there. And then the publishers decide if the audience will like it or not and give it a pass.

Like you said, Frieren is enjoyed by young boys and people should not look down on Shounen magazines. That being said I don’t think we should be mentioning genres like shounen in the first place because because slice of life can be literally shounen. We should talk using subgenres and whoever mentioned shounen/seinen/josei/shoujo first loses.

Also personal opinion Apothecary diaries was better that season and I’m not afraid to state my opinion. Frieren might be better version of Kino’s journey though :( but I also hate Stark and Fern screentime so idk :/
