Gosh... I've heard BGS called Monogateri for normies, so maybe Monogateri. And I'd definitely recommend Angel Beats.

As for just romances with emotional hits, Toradora, Your Lie in April, Days with my Step-Sister.

A good pair of OVA's are, "To Me, the One Who Loved You", and the companion ova "To All the You's I loved Before". The are romance/sci-fi.
