The hunt for gold begins! But seriously, this came with risks given that they are in unknown territory. Sugimoto and the otehrs didn't seem that nervous though.

Not going to lie, this episode had some funny raw emotions. Sugimoto's fight this episode was also crazy. Literally wrestling against a man bear.

Wow, that was an interesting twist there, it really illustrates how much a lust of gold can make people act, and that Ainu tales being passed down correctly is an important thing. I do like how they didn't hold back with the gore either.

It's amazing how this story can explore so many different genres to remain fresh every time. The flexibility of the writing is truly one of its best qualities. We can go from adrenaline fueled action to gut busting comedy to suspense thriller and not feel any whiplash. This episode starting out completely normal just Sugimoto, Asirpa, Shiraishi and Vasili going to look for gold in the river. Meeting this weird guy but he helps them by revealing there's not just gold here but platinum too! Which hell yeah platinum that could get some nice money for the group now that they're on their own. Slowly seeing the episode shift once Heita mentioned the wenkamuy stalking him. Very interesting as things got more suspenseful, Heita having multiple personalities he's taken on from his dead family members was a wild reveal. The classic "who are you talking about it's just you here", loved it. Totally flipped the episode on its head and made the bear attacks even more vicious. The idea of sticking it rich off the gold poisoning not only Heita mind but previously his family's minds too. There's some kind of lesson here about seeing people destroy themselves for gold and greed.

Wow man, this was definitely a trip of an episode. I knew Heita didn’t seem right from the beginning, the moment he claimed he saw a bear but no one else did triggered a red flag lol, and there was also the fact that no one was reacting to the man and woman that were also there, except the Russian sniper lad. I think revealing that it was Heita he was drawing was a very cool way to reveal the twist, and the crazed Heita with the bear pelt was also really cool to see, very spooky and intense scenes.

It’s a damn shame too because that girl was a beautiful babe, and I guess that raises another hint since Shiraishi wasn’t all over her lol. But now Heita can be put to rest and stop being tormented by his own mind, I thought it was really interesting how it was tied to an Ainu story as well. And I guess this also means our main group has another skin, that’s a win in my book lol. And lastly I liked the little history lesson about gold and platinum, one of the things I love about this series is stuff like that.

FINALLY, the wenkamuy bear isn't CGI anymore...but what a twist of an opening that was!

Sugimoto and Co. are back in Hokkaido at last, and it feels like home from a faraway time. The fight for the Ainu gold resumes, though a wenkamuy is what stops people from finding the gold, and that's adding a wenkamuy man making a profit of 50 yen/day. Heita almost dropping to his death while panning for gold at the Uryu river, and Sugimoto and Co. are here to do the same. It's fascinating how people can actually pan for gold with the best of minimal equipment needed in the rigid cold, freezing water. It turns out that Heita was the one making that exact 50 yen/day, and how he did it, is by finding gold that's wedged in platinum, a material used on the felt tip of the fountain pen that's more valuable by the day, thus creating a gold rush. The wenkamuy is back to spy on Heita, though using a chakchak kamuy didn't raise any red flags. Heita's tobacco case from a time where he hunted gold with the Ainu, it went from ambitious to downright threat, and Noriko trying to seduce the Russian sniper into drawing her, what exactly are they aiming for with Heita overlooking with some raw Jojo tongue-licking comedy with Taka and Noriko's kiss. The thing is, the Russian sniper almost got sniped by an amappo that's used for hunting deers, though the use case here is something else.

By now, Sugimoto and Co. would've realized that something's amiss, and the wenkamuy starts to target people, starting with Taka and Noriko. The thing that the Russian sniper drew...was just one person: Heita, clearly hiding his skin, and with the bear pelt, it seemed more likely that it was a figment of his imagination, and true to life he was: one of the tattooed ex-convicts that had his body carved as part of the Ainu gold map. Faking his sounds and going for pure ecstacy with the reformation of his body being controlled by the wenkamuy, it was for sure a BS-kind of story that one would not think it's real, but he really is the Brown Bear Man that now, Sugimoto has to deal with his inhumane strength, but that because of the greed of money, he took advantage of it and earned his way by killing people instead by becoming a wenkamuy.

The Ainu legend that Heita learnt of, it's a partial right and wrong that still drives home the lust for gold, the greed that never ceases for sacrifice. What a painful lesson.

It's nice for Golden Kamuy to come back and be as nuts as ever.

To keep it real tho, I need it to surpass or keep pace with Vinland Saga season 2 and it's not doing that right now. Those two anime are always the best in the room and the competition makes both of them better.

On the plus side, that overlong break made the animation more consistent.

One more insane person/bear, added to the list of crazy encounters.

Vasily is a true artist. The crazy guy goes "Draw me like one of your french girls", and Vasily goes " Heck yeah!"

I thought pretty much the same thing. It can do really anything.
"And now it's a mystery slash (haha) psycho thriller"

Still, I would have preferred a more delayed, more condensed solution. Would have been more punchy.

Great episode, that mix between the schizophrenia of the protagonist and the legend of Wen Kamuy gives it an impressive mystical touch... What a delight to be able to savor once again the stories of the Ainu in this great anime that is Golden Kamuy...

Golden Kamuy has had its fair share of weird and eccentric characters, the Heita ranks up near the very top of that pile. The way things went about in this episode was very creepy.

I do feel sympathetic of Heita, considering his backstory and what drove him to become the very thing that he feared the most, a Wenkamuy, but in the end, he had to be stopped when he went berserk and attacked Sugimoto, so he was killed of be triggering by a deer trap during his fight. A bloody end to a tragic character, that's for sure.

Overall, this was a fascinating and solid episode. =)

This season of Golden Kamuy has some really great moments in isolation and a really interesting core plotline in the middle of it all, but my god it might be the most unfocused of them at all. Episode 7 ended on a really high point of tension as the group just escaped Tsurumi's clutches while also not being aware of Ogata's pursuit, so it feels kind of weird to deflate all that tension with this episode about another addition to Golden Kamuy's extensive collection of nutcases.

As I say, in isolation episode 7 and this one both have interesting stories to tell and (particularly in this case) interesting approaches to doing so, but having them back-to-back just doesn't feel right in terms of the overarching narrative. All in all, I just wish this season could be more consistent in its approach and not keep flip-flopping around so erratically every week.

What an absolute fever dream of an episode.
The pacing and animation felt very off at times and I feel like the overall quality was lower than usual, but that sort of fit with the creepy and surreal vibe.
Still a very fun episode to watch, but I hope the last few episodes of this season will return to the usual level of quality.

I was excited when I know Ishida Akira will voice Heita. Damn, this episode is freaking good!! Heita is really interesting character.
At least at the end of his life, he somewhat free from the wenkamuy that haunted his mind.
Too bad because he actually quite a decent man but oh well, we know how it went.

I laughed so much at Vasily when he drew Noriko in the hut( just look at the hand movements). Well, the seiyuu is Umehara Yuuichiro who actually didn't shy to admit that he's a pervert.

no one does weird characters like Golden Kamuy and this guy is top three in the weird stakes. Great voice acting too.

Wow such a strange and unusual episode. Though for some reason it doesn't feel out of place at all when looking how Golden Kamuy is like.

Everything was inside that weirdo's head this whole time, and to think he was the one pretending as the man eating bear.. that's why you should go easy while reciting bed time stories to kids.

That was a Genius ep. Also kinda eerie. From the title I knew that the bear was actually a man dressed as a bear, but I didn't think it would be Heita himself. I rewatched the ep and it more sense. None of the men reacted to Heita's family members other than Vasily. His guilt of killing his own family made him schizophrenic and also causing him to have a split personality. The ending was sad too :/
