Publishing company Shogakukan announced a new anime adaptation of Rumiko Takahashi's Ranma ½ manga on Wednesday. More information will be revealed in a livestream on the official X account on July 17 at 6:00 p.m. JST.

Takahashi serialized the romantic comedy manga in Weekly Shounen Sunday from August 1987 to February 1996. Shogakukan published the manga in 38 volumes from April 1988 to June 1996 and later released it in two new editions in 2002–2003 and 2016–2018.

VIZ Media licensed the manga in English and released 21 volumes from May 1993 to March 2003. In May 2003, the company began publishing a second edition and released the 36th and final volume in November 2006. VIZ Media also released a 2-in-1 omnibus edition between March 2014 and March 2017.

Studio Deen adapted the manga into a television anime that aired in 161 episodes from April 1989 to September 1992. The manga also received multiple movies and original video anime over the years, with the latest installment, Ranma ½: Akumu! Shunmin Kou, released in 2008.

VIZ Media licensed the anime series and a number of original video anime episodes in English in 1993 and released them on VHS and DVD. The company re-acquired the series in August 2013 and re-released the television anime on Blu-ray in May 2016, as well as the movies and OVAs in July 2023.

Synopsis
Soun Tendou runs the Tendou Martial Arts School accompanied by his three daughters: Akane, Nabiki, and Kasumi. One day, the sisters' lives are turned upside down when their father announces that he has promised one of them to be married to a fellow martial artist's son in hopes of carrying on the family legacy. In addition to their mixed reactions, when the fiancé arrives, the last thing the Tendou family expects is Ranma Saotome and his father, Genma.

Ranma has been training in China with his father until an unfortunate accident changed them both. Now, when water touches them, Ranma turns into a girl and Genma into a giant panda. Ranma ½ follows Ranma as he attempts to get along with his newly betrothed, the youngest of the Tendou sisters, Akane. As the two begin to attend the same school, they deal with fellow friends and rivals, all of whom have something to say about their engagement. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

Wow wow, is my speculation justified and the Yatsura remake will finally pave the way for a new and more accurate adaptation of my favorite manga of Rumiko-san? I even wonder if they will continue the nostalgic neon style of the UY adaptation

I have a feeling they'll change Happosai quite a bit to reflect current sensibilities. Good to see Takahashi's works still being animated, even if Ranma was never a favourite of mine. Maybe Maison Ikkoku next, although as a fan of the older versions I don't know if I'd want one. Still, I guess these remakes introduce the stories to a new audience.

Keep the original voice cast. They're younger than the UY cast and are still very much capable of voicing their roles. I can't imagine Ranma without Hayashibara or Yamaguchi. Additionally keep the nipples in. UY was one thing, but Ranma without nipples would be weird as fuck. Also kinda hoping this will be more of a pseudo sequel than a reboot. Just do a quick review of the old anime in 6-12 episodes max, then adapt the rest of the story that was never adapted in another 2 cours. There's no way this will get more than what the UY reboot got, and that was already really rushed and cut a lot of content. Ranma is even longer than UY and less episodic so they'd easily need 8 cours to do a halfway decent adaptation.

I'm more excited about hearing this news than Urusei Yatsura new anime. my childhood manga and favorite before reading Tsubasa.

Wonder if Kappei Yamaguchi (seiyuu who voiced multiple anime that adapted Takahashi-sensei's manga) would be involved in any way.

@EcchiGodMamster Remembering how ecchi looked in the old anime and manga and how Rumiko received criticism for it, I highly doubt they will get the green light for this.

@Piromysl Perhaps they will take on the Mansion first as a simpler and warmer work?

@mshfqtny If so, she will literally become a unique god-blessed author. Just imagine, after 20-30 years, showing the world all your hit works again with modern capabilities.

I never did finish the original Ranma, not sure why I stopped. Was it a complete adaptation?

I won't lie, I am interested in this because I really enjoyed the original. But I do feel like there are so many shows that need continuations and Ranma already had its time to shine with lots of content. The original show still holds up from memory so while this is nice, it's not really necessary... and it's a little worry some to think if this becomes the norm (the game industry is plagued by so many re-releases imo).

If it is the same studio, that's annoying. The original Urusei had 195 episodes (will ignore the movies to simplify things), the new adaptation is only at 46. Even if we assume 50% filler, there's still a LOT left to go...

EDIT: Apparently Urusei is finished. Wow, I'd assume that was pretty rushed? Looking at filler list, Urusei didn't have much to begin with (12%)

Not gonna lie, this relatively recent trend of remaking old anime makes me a disappointed man. This is too much like Hollywood with its creative bankruptcy and overreliance on milking nostalgia for me. Or maybe I'm just an uninformed noob and new, highly successful, and superior to old stuff in every way sailor moons and urusei yatsuras have been popping out every year. Either way, I'm cautiously optimistic... or is it optimistically cautious these days?🤔

Oh. Well, this is awkward. I finished the original 1989 anime (and when I say finished, I mean I only watched the canon episodes) last year, and started reading the manga where the last canon episode of the anime left off, and now a remake has been announced? Obviously didn't expect a remake to be announced the next year, and yeah it's cool that it's getting a remake, but now I wish I didn't start reading the manga. The series is episodic though, so I'm expecting it to skip a lot of content. Will probably be 46 episodes total like Urusei Yatsura remake. If that's the case, they should skip adapting chapters that have Happosai in it.

@animegamer245 You don't understand. Gender has become a controversial topic these days. In the 80s and 90s there was a whole subgenre of jokes revolving around gender confusion. Nowadays it's practically impossible to sell a show that runs on gender jokes because of the whole culture war thing going on; one side will call it "degenerate" while the other will slap various "phobias" onto it.

I wish this news was not true. I think the cast will be fully changed like the remake "Urusei Yatsura". If they use the voice actors from the old anime, it is because too many voice actors have become famous and paid too much for their work.

In this day and age, erotic parts such as nipples will be cut out considerably, and I have a feeling that they will also make changes regarding the Happosai.

I can't say I'm happy about the remakes of Rumiko Takahashi's works, but I have a feeling that they will continue for a long time to come.

Ah ok, so it was leaked before but no proper confirmation... was wondering why we only had the news now.

Ranma is one of the oldest anime I m hyped to watch cuz I seen a bit when I was very small and it this nostalgic associated with those times, that I want to watch it properly, despite anime not adapting the whole of the manga.

So this is great new, also I m already watching Maison, so a remake, ok, but this one is definitely very watchable, specially at BD1080p.

MichaelJackson said:

There is space for everything, you are already getting adaptations and sequels to tons of new stuff, this remake doesn't endanger anything, if anything seeing a modern take to such a classic, if possible with quality is way more appealing than giving a try to most of the garbage that comes out these days.

There are some misogynist and homophobic scenes. I expect them to tone them down, same goes for nipples and boobs shoots.
Also, let's not forget Happosai. The "perv creepy old man" trope aged terribly even in Japan. They will surely tone him WAY WAY down

Urusei Yatsura remake is finished because it was never intended to be a complete adaptation. They only adapted their favorite parts including the ending.

Ranma anime is not a complete adaptation.
Rumiko's most recently finished manga was not completely adapted either.
