I don't know how to compare it to other anime that use 3DCG, but I think that this anime has a good application in using 3D technology. First, the depiction of the expressions of each character is good and flexible. Then, the level of accuracy of using 3DCG in their musical instrument playing is high I would say.

I would like to know your opinion and how you rate whether Girls Band Cry can be the best anime that uses 3DCG or other anime have other advantages in 3DCG?

I have been loving it, imo I can’t put it above Studio Orange works like Houseki no Kuni and Trigun Stampede, but the 3DCG in this is great and is definitely up there as one of the best I’ve seen.

Hard to compare. If we are talking facial expressions, Trigun Stampede and Beastars are on the top too. But these 2 have more realistics expressions, while Girls Band Cry is more Anime-esque type of facial expressions...

It goes to personal preference I guess. I personally love both styles and can't compare because of how different they are

I have Toei to blame for making me want more 3D anime, something I never thought I’d want.

When done as well as Toei have, 3D can be much more than a cheap alternative to 2D. Characters can become more dynamic, detailed, and alive, especially during really “technical” scenes like playing instruments.

However, it ultimately comes down to the studio to take advantage of what 3D offers. Bang Dream MyGO was also 3D but the characters tended to be stiff and doll-like, the complete opposite of GBC.

I loved Trigun, but this uses moe expressions and is actually cute, first time that ever happened with CGI. The expressions in MyGo were good too but the flat unrealistic textures weren’t quite there. To me this anime sets new standards in its genre if not overall.

Nope.
Its score keeps getting higher, so I can at least see it surpassing MyGo. Whether it's temporary or firmly establishes itself above it is anyone's guess.

I don't see it surpassing Land of the Lustrous though, which is even higher.

No Land of the Lustrous is significantly higher at 8.39 and Bang Dream MyGo is a bit ahead as well but GBC will probably surpass it at the rate it is increasing. there might be one or two other ones as well

Despite being completely different shows I noticed that one of the things I like most about Land of the Lustrous and GBC is the same. The overly annoying, pushy protagonist who is constantly picking fights but you can't help but root for anyway, and as the series goes on you understand why they feel that way. It's funny that these two series might be competing for highest rated 3D series.

@SpritezUp I think, at least to me, Girls Band Cry is way better than Land of the Lustrous. Land of the Lustrous has a really special atmosphere, an interesting and imaginative setting and a story arc about the loss of innocence and personality that we won't be able to appreciate in its fullnes until we don't get its second season. But Girls Band Cry is more about the so called "Human condition" from the perspective of teenagers during their formative years and I am more interested in the later even though I appreciate the former.

"Can this anime become the #1 3DCG anime?"

I haven't seen many other 3DCG anime so I'm not entirely sure. However, it can and will be #1 in my heart.

What I've gathered from this discussion is that I need to watch Land of the Lustrous. It's going on the plan to watch, I'll definitely give it a look.

Couldn't agree more with this. I'd love to see more 3D show of similar (or even better) quality. Fell in love with fluidity and how alive characters feels and how adorable their expressions can be :)

@Zarutaku I love Houseki no Kuni, and it's one of the best anime for me story-wise, but they're two different kinds of anime. And the characters in Houseki aren't even humans, but rather precious stones in the shape of humans (animating the movement of the hair seems easier).

Just judging the animation alone, I've always preferred traditional 2D (whether old fashioned handpainted cel animation or the new iteration of that after the digital transition), but as far as 3D CGI goes, the ones which have always looked best to me in anime (just taking the animation and use of CGI into account and nothing to do with the story and writing, music, voice acting, etc.) have been:

- Houseki no Kuni (probably the gold standard, but I also think that there's something inherently logically intuitive about using this form of animation for humanoid gems who are shiny personified versions of blocky geometric shapes to begin with - something was brought out about the depth and luster of these precious stones which, if not better than it could be or would have been in 2D animation, then at least decidedly distinctly different and therefore worth doing for that difference)
- Beastars
- Dorohedoro

But I would say this is at least a close contender and should be somewhere in the Top 5.

I like 3D CGI made to look 2D, but you just know its 3D.

Similar to the consensus here, its Studio Orange and Sanzigen that are peak at doing this.

If Toei hones their 3D craft to their level, then i'd put them in this hallowed group.

You can see Toei's rather rough poor animation quality when they put in 2D scenes, its quite jerky and jarring and you just lose the immersion because its so very distracting.
Its like they didnt storyboard and time GBC properly and they have to put in a few extra scenes.

It could, but the story is somewhat holding it back a bit. I think every other aspect of the show is really good. The music is great, and the visuals are quite appealing, too, plus everyone likes nice hair and cloth simulation. And I love how every time they perform the camerawork and fx go nuts.
As for usage of 3d, there are actually a lot of great 2d anime that use it fit really well, from what I can think rn, Danmachi4 p2 had a very nice 3d boss and water simulation, 86 was cg in every fight scene, although some people did not like it. And shows like Osama ranking and Bocchi the rock actually use 3d but then draw on top of it, a technique called rotoscoping, that's why when you see Bocchi perform sometimes it looked 3dish.

But overall, I also think that this anime helped set the bar for the next 3dcg anime. Taking about that, I saw a trailer from one called To be Hero x that looked like it could be the next great anime when it comes to the usage of 3d.

@Ryushindai I think the biggest reason for those two being on top is everything other than the characters.

the sets, that orange builds are on a different level. Having much better art direction is also a huge plus.

Here is a youtube video of the layers of its 3D animation and how it was made. It is a funny thing that when 3D animation is almost on the treshold of becoming aestheticly pleasing AI generated animation will displace it before it becomes more widely used

Fans of this anime are so delusional.

I don't think it's better than land of the lustrous. If you're talking about mal rating, even if it passes land of the lustrous it would be wrong in every possible way.

The cgi in this anime isn't as good as everyone say it is. Everything looks way too unrealistic. At least more than most good cgi animes I've seen. Maybe people confused good design with good cgi.

The rating here already is way too high than it should be. If this anime becomes more widespread than it is then the rating would drop significantly.

The only strong thing this anime has for me are the songs.

Guys, chill. I just wanted to ask your perspective on what's good about this anime. I was just wondering if GBC could be the #1 3DCG anime, and after seeing your opinions I understand why it's still hard for GBC to be the best.

I'm not trying to insist that GBC should be the best 3DCG anime. And also not to be delusional for merely being a fan of this anime so that it exalts the anime over others🥴

@ryzxgum While I agree that it's a very good looking film, I also think it borrows too much aesthetically from Western 3D animation and ends up losing much of the character that I have come to expect from anime.
