DUDE I was hella hyped when I was talking about it with a friend early that day it released saying stuff like oh yeah can’t wait for it to be released sometime this year (we had no idea when and didn’t bother looking it up) and as soon as I try to sleep MAL hit me with the notification that ep 1 was out. Tried to find where abouts I could watch it, got like a minute in and decided to wait for more episodes to binge it all in a day. :)
weirdly read vol 10 just recently right up to where this episode ends exactly, there is next to no change, I'll probably refrain from reading it now unless the season gets too CGI heavy like the last one.
"I wouldn't say he doesn't understand, but rather he doesn't know everything they're doing" - he says it literally in this episode: "there is no way a salaryman can run an entire country but I still have to look the part". He is incompetent, he knows it, and he extends his ridiculous "kingdom" anyway.
True. However, I believe that the fact that he realizes this works to his advantage. Ainz understands that he will not be able to govern himself (no ruler is all-powerful and doesn't rule by himself), so he also relies on his subordinates, in addition he takes action himself to learn new things that can help him managing the kingdom. As for me, Ainz behaves way better than most of the nobles of the Re-Estize kingdom, who cared only about short-term profit and didn't mind that the kingdom was plunging into an ever greater crisis. And these were people who received a proper education, and yet in the end they turned out to be completely incompetent.
"As far as I remember, Ainz wants to provide equipment and training for potential adventurers. He treats it as an investment" - adventurers went from "we don't interfere with state, our reason of existence is to protect people" to "we will lick Ainz's boots, screw the people" for no discernible reason. The only reason they would need training is that he will send them to places unknown because no one ever returned from them. And training will make them Ainz's subordinates forever. His investment is close to nothing, it is specifically pointed out in LN. He didn't promise them either equipment or money, just abstract "support and training". And they were very impressed. This part is ridiculous no matter how you slice it.
"I can't agree. Let's take the relationships within the Re-Estize realm" - I dropped LN much earlier. The deal with adventurers was so ridiculous that looked through it in LN and it is actually worse in LN. His intention to extend his "kingdom" even though "there is no way a salaryman can run an entire country" is ridiculous. If he want to impress his guildies he could try to, you know, find them. Hire freaking adventurers to look for them. Offer reward and print posters. Taking over the countries and trying to turn them into utopia is just way too dumb.
Judging by how Ainz has acted so far, I wouldn't say he makes empty promises to would-be adventurers who would agree to work for him. Ainz, thanks to his own resources, is able to provide security in the region he controls, so many adventurers may become unemployed. True, in a sense they will become his subordinates, but in return they are to receive support from a powerful sponsor and at the same time get the opportunity to earn good money and fame. I don't think Ainz is sending them out into the world to die somewhere in the wasteland. If he invests in something, he expects them to discover, obtain information or establish contacts with other unknown countries. It is somewhat similar to the situation when, in the 15th century, the Spanish monarch set Christopher Columbus into the unknown. It was an investment that finally paid off for Spain. And Christopher Columbus himself gained fame and his place in history.
You claim that Ainz, instead of creating his own kingdom, could hire adventurers to seek out his companions. Well, I doubt that he would be able to find volunteers for such an expedition. Don't forget that, like Ainz, no other guild member is human, so I don't think anyone would agree to venture into unknown parts of the world to look for powerful monsters. On the other hand, gaining fame in the world as the ruler of a well-organized kingdom may attract attention. Moreover, the very creation of a state gives some legitimacy to exist. Until now, Nazarick was just a habitat of monsters that anyone could attack according to their abilities. Let's not forget that in this world there are many powerful world class items that can be very dangerous, here I will remind you of a situation where the use of a powerful item caused Shalltear to attack Ainz. However, as a state, they can have their own international interests, coalitions of supporters, alliances. Under these circumstances, opponents may have a serious problem to fight Nazarick.
"in the future they might be great warriors who would strengthen Nazarick" - did they? They are nothing in comparison with undead. "will be able to learn something that will bring additional benefits for Nazarick" - did he? I remember lizards part being boring and don't think they ever appear again in anime. The same thing will happen with adventurers, they are completely irrelevant to the story, author has to write something to sell LNs. Which would be ok if it wasn't so insultingly ridiculous.
Well that's right. At the moment, the Lizardmen are not of great support, but it is not known what will happen in the future. Don't forget that Ainz as undead can wait. Even if he had to wait for the next generation of Lizardmen (I remember he was very interested in the child of Zaryus and Crusch). In my opinion, this is a long-term investment. Anyway, even at the present level, they may prove useful in dealing with matters where the use of the powerful undead will be useless. As I mentioned, one of the Lizardmen will be Ainz's guide to the land of the Dwarves and will help establish friendly relations with them. For me, that is quite an important role in this story.
"He has a clearly defined goal and does what it sees fit to achieve it. However, on the other hand, he works methodically, calmly and slowly" - right. "Lets massacre male population so that these worms didn't even think about resistance", next day - "I will build utopia for remaining worms". Very methodical indeed. And such clarity of goals. Apparently his guildies will be impressed by utopia, not terrified by massacre. Solid plan.
Worms? I believe that Ainz doesn't see other creatures as worms, he even had some sympathy for some, especially those who reminded him of his former companions (while his underlings are a different story, especially Albedo). I think most of the time he sees them as useful or not and what they can offer him. More. Ainz tries to change the attitude of his subordinates a bit (for example Narberal). As for the great battle where a lot of men were killed. Well, that's what we called conquest. This is what many states/empires have done. Someone had amassed enough strength to invade their neighbors, massacred those who resisted, and then took power over the rest of the people. The fact that Ainz wants to provide work and living opportunities for the rest of the people who inhabit his kingdom is generally not all that bad. Hey, he could kill them all and use their bodies for resources. How would guild friends respond to Ainz's actions? You have to remember that they are also not human so their mental state may correspond to their new incarnation. Might as well have seen it all, they might have said. Oh shit dude, you did a good job organizing it all. Nice boss. Now I remembered that Ainz once mentioned that back when they were playing Yggdrasil together, one of his companions said that they should conquer the world.

OMG! here we go S4!!!
Albedo's obsession to Ainz never fails to amuse me!
Pandora's Actor always cracks me-up! VA Miyano Mamoru is really exemplar!
5/5.
Been waiting so long for O4.. and the episode felt like it went for 5 mins... very slow pace and lots of dialogue. Love the fan service as usual too. Also like new girl Fith.. I don't remember much of her in the LN (been awhile).. but she was cute.. got quite abit of screen time. Animation quality and art looked a little better too. Looking forward to more.
Damn it was soo great to see some of the characters again, the interactions are great as usual and the hype is real. Wish albedo would rape me.
Behold of my awesomeness~
controversial and/or sensitive topics likely devolve into the same repetitive, derogatory, abusive, and harassing comments can no longer be posted.
But my feels.
Starting off the episode with albedo's antics was very enjoyable to watch. The twins's crossdressing goes deep into their core that they'd like all the kids to do it. What a cruel city it'd become. I liked seeing Pandora's Actor again too. Ainz's goal at the end of this episode makes me believe that he's just quite the lonely dude who'd rather have comrades like he used to and not servants. I doubt he's going to get that in these guys though!
And albedo is so goddamn adorable the voice acting is absolutely amazing back then I've never really get why a lot of people loved albedo but now that my taste have improved i get it now
Also the ln has way more detailed than this but it's still doable
Triggerfish124 said: Episode was pretty good. Gave it a 4/5 because I felt like Ainz's negotiation with the guild leader went too smoothly. Im sure some people will probably comment to this saying why it should be obvious, but from my view I think the fact the Ainz is (a) an undead, (b) a new ruler that killed many of the men in that city in war, (c) is the reason for lack of adventurer work and the present stagnation of the city's economy, and (d) its customary to always keep the guild out from under governmental powers is enough reason for the guild leader to not be easily persuaded in one meeting.
it was exactly like that in the LN, so read it if you want the non-cut version of the conversation in its entirety
slavemaster_1991 said: Already rushed, missing a lot of crucial details, and already looking on budget. I didn't expect much and I was right to do so.
what crucial details lol
I re-read vol 10 right before watching, and no major part was cutout
I don't consider that conversation with the mythril adventurer as major since nothing of significance was discussed, just added more layers to the characters
also the art/animation look cleaner than before so I don't think you know what you're talking about when you say budget
remember budget isn't really important, it's the time spent on production
Eifue said: It's a great episode and all but are we getting into the politics arc like every other isekai where the MC is just establishing a country for good PR?
The whole Overlord is a politics arc.
I disagree, we can see from the first 3 seasons that the series was exploring different themes and exploring the philosophical question as what to do when you are the peak of power but you're unambitious? The political mindgames in this season may just be a McGuffin to explore another side of this question.
The first episode of this anime was utterly atrocious. I really enjoyed all three season of Overlord and believe this one will at the very least be average. But this first episode had absolutely nothing in it to make me want to watch more.
The only reason this episode is a 2/10 and not a 1/10 is simply because it's the fourth season, thus people would have watched the first three seasons and know the anime isn't actually this bad.
I can't really break this episode down as literally nothing happens of any note.
I'm mostly disappointed at the fact that it's been years since i watched Overlord III and i had fond memories of the show. But this episode (after waiting for so long) was a disappointment in all the right areas.
I will (of course) continue to watch. However i must admit i'm saddened at this first episode, 2/10.
Off to a nice start with Albedo scenes! I can't get enough of her! She is so cute, so beautiful, so everything!
1:52 How I wish I am being served by such beautiful maids right now.
3:13 I'm also a regular salaryman, but if I'm given the chance, I'm sure I can run a feudal country thanks to my thousands of hours playing Crusader Kings, especially if I am a powerful being like Ainz. lol
13:04 Ah, that was Pandora's Actor playing Momon. No wonder Albedo was so hostile toward him.
I dream of living in a utopia! I wish Ainz invaded & ruled real life.
Forgive me for I have neglected to watch this fourth season of Overlord for oh so long...
As someone who has read the light novels, I know exactly what will happen, but truthfully, I can only get even more excited of what's to come! Oh lord, seeing Ainz in all his glory after so long has made me happy, the first half of the ep showcases his daily routine of sorting out the laws that he must accept or deny. Now the interesting bit comes in the second half of the ep. In the Sorcerer Kingdom, the existence of undead black knights has pretty much annihilated the need for adventurers to pose as guards or bounty killers. And with that, Ainz's proposal to make all adventurers take on a job that suits their name in the first place is one that many would hopefully take with eagerness. ADVENTURERS ARE SUPPOSED TO GO ON AN ADVENTURE! What better goal does one require?! No more menial labour and boring tasks. Let the people seek out the world.
Ainz's ultimate goal is to find his colleagues, his friends. Establishing his own Kingdom aside from Nazarick is one step towards that, but making this kingdom of his prosper with many various races united under the flag of Ainz Ooal Gown is what will send the names of the Kingdom all across this new wide world...
