Pretty cool and unique episode for Yamato and his partner to enter a Digimon style race.

Even though Gabumon got tired, I like how Yamato always stood by his side. True friendship right there.

Well, that was certainly a lame way to introduce a Digimon like MetalGarurumon. Literally one of the most relevant evolutions from the original series appeared just because Gabumon wanted to save someone he met 5 minutes before in a strange urge to become Lightning McQueen or something. I can't believe anyone thought this was a good idea. Also, didn't WereGarurumon had those wings attached that let him go super fast? Why didn't he used those in the race? Ugh, whatever.

Other than that there's the lately frequent Tailmon over-exposition of the plot whenever the story needs the cast to know something they wouldn't otherwise, Joe as an announcer and Takeru dressed like a... cheerleader? Was this fan service?

In any case, a bad episode overall. Hopefully next time with Magnaangemon things won't go this way.

Okay, so. I'm not going to compare this MetalGarurumon with the original since there's no point. There are a lot of things to process, and if analyzed deeper, there's definitely a lot to unpack for this episode.

Gabumon getting excited on his own over a possibility to race. This is a far cry from my usual impression of him 100% devoted to Yamato and doing things depending only on how it would impact his partner. I find this very welcomed. Same case with Joe becoming comfortable with his silly antics other than panicking to cram his textbooks.

Yamato is also showing the results of character development a few episodes back. Admittedly we still don't know much about his background in this reboot, other than his parents are divorced and he doesn't live in Tokyo, but with the pacing, I've pretty much given up on getting more detailed info on the kids' life before Digital World.

I seriously wonder where the Digital Grand Prix idea came from. It's fun, but the setting isn't really serving any other purpose, and even thrown out of the picture by the end of the episode. And someone, please get Takeru out of the dress.

The only good art and animation is the MetalGarurumon evolution sequence. Other than that, the star digimon looks disproportionate, and I still can't get over Taichi's goggle eyes at the start of the episode.

Overall, I like what the scriptwriter is trying to achieve, but the execution just didn't do it justice.

A Digimon death race Grand Prix huh. Gabumon on his own volition to race against Machmon in Garurumon fashion together with Yamato, and old habits die hard.

Acting like a true match with match announcers (of Joe and Gomamon) and cheerleaders and stuff (and is that Takeru in cross-dressing fashion? EWWWW). Parasimon lurking within Machmon, and the Mega Evolution of WereGarurumon to MetalGarurumon is only of significance for like 5 minutes or so, albeit with a cool transformation scene worthy of a Mega Evolution.

Probably the first or few of some episodes where this inherently feels very different from the OG, and since this is a reboot, it doesn't need to match the OG, and I'm completely fine with it.

What a dumb and pointless episode and reason to evolve, at least the evolution sequence was pretty badass. Lately I've been checking what would be happening on the same episode number in the original and man, I have no words about this reboot.

Seriously, we're going to introduce the 2nd most important Mega of the original in a random one off gimick episode with the least at stake in recent memory? It would have still made more sense in ep 42, at least in that fight TK was involved too. God this is dumb.

I seriously wonder where the Digital Grand Prix idea came from.

There was a special of the original anime back in 2000s. Maybe from there, since they're taking a lot of ideas from all the other Digimon series as well.

Yeah, nostalgia plays a factor too and like I said, everybody is free to use english or japanese or *insert any language here* names.

Just like in Pokémon I use Bulbasaur instead of Fushigidane, that's what I'm used to and been using for 20 years.

I do like this episode. Something that I think a lot of people may have missed is that the "villain" digimon was actually sentient again, which makes it seem like the writers have decided to do away with mindless antagonists, at least for now, but hopefully for the rest of the series as well.

Many of you write this off as a random way to evolve to MetalGarurumon. Yeah, it is sort of weird, but Parasimon is a mega as well. You can't beat a mega without a mega...except sometimes! As we have learned in that episode with mephistomon.

To be fair, HolyAngemon (and the other Japanese names) are a lot more English-friendly than the Pokemon ones. Still agree anyone can use whatever tho

While I do agree anyone can call the name they're familiar to, it's always iffy for me to see evolution level names in Japanese. Afaik, it's something like this:

In Japanese:
Child --> Adult --> Perfect --> Ultimate

In English:
Rookie --> Champion --> Ultimate --> Mega

As you can see, the term 'Ultimate' is used in both languages but they refer to different levels so when someone said "XXXmon is an Ultimate" to some Digimon I don't know, it confuses the hell out of me which level it is. I kinda want a uniformity in this case tbh.

That's why I always use English terms for evolution names since they're the terms that used more in every localized Digimon games. While Japanese terms might be more accurate (cuz ultimate means something final), English terms are more stylized to make the franchise unique. Just my two cents.

As for the rest like kids' names, Digimon names and signature attacks, Japanese terms all the way. Because they sound obviously more natural. I can't raise my eyebrows enough when I saw "Izzy" in subtitles even tho the characters clearly said "Koushiro". Gatomon who? The cat I know is called Tailmon. Fuck Pepper Breath, all my homies use Baby Flame.

. . .
Huh? Stfu and talk about the episode? Okay, it sucks. It might be beating the dead horse but evolution to MetalGarurumon holds zero significance and buildup. Gabumon was head over heels for some random bike Digimon he just met and cuz of that "friendship" that came out of nowhere, he unlocked Mega level just like that, risk-free and no stakes. Okay, nothing new here.

And I'm tired to mention the super inconsistency of Digimon sizes. I expected Gundam-size MetalGarurumon cuz we already saw Megazord WarGreymon. But c'mon, WereGarurumon who we saw some episodes ago, exactly in the same show, is now way bigger in this episode that Yamato was just a tiny spot on his shoulder. Either Yamato got shrunk or they can change sizes according to data-whatever convenient excuses or animators are just braindead. I don't care anymore.

I am finally caught up. Duh, I don't know what to feel about this reboot, the last 5 or so eps (and a few before that) felt like they were born from a drug fuelled hardcore orgy.

Now then, I don't remember much from the OG I admit. Can someone jog my memory? Did that also lack any sort of logical power level system? Because that sure seems out of wack, not to mention digimon seem to lack stamina as well (or at least they recover extremely fast after battles...). I don't remember digimon being this varied either..

Also what's up with the evolutions that are all over the place as well? I don't remember such things like Bltizgreymon or whatever that was for example. Where is my boi Skullgreymon??

The evolution was great but the episode we got it was so.....pointless? When you go mega there should have been bigger stakes for the group than just a simple race.

The Champion/Ultimate/Mega system is a general ruler for Digimon's power level altho there were obviously some exceptions even in the OG. Such as a strong Champion being able to win against a weak Ultimate (Togemon vs Monzaemon for example), Angel-type Digimons are OP etc. But there were very rare cases of a lower level winning, or fighting toe-to-toe against a higher level unlike in this reboot. Now the general rule is thrown out of window and Champion/Ultimate/Mega is just a name.

Once again immediately recognized that voice of Hiyama Nobuyuki for a fourth time now within the Digimon Franchise, voicing Machmon in this episode.

02 was Blackwargreymon
Frontier was Seraphimon
Xros Wars was SlashAngemon

I'm finally catching up (not sure why I'm doing this to myself tbh).

This was such a weird episode and honestly such a waste. Metalgarurumon was just randomly thrown in there and they really tried to force some sort of friendship between Yamato, Gabumon and the Machmon even though they just met :x
Are the crests even an actual thing in this reboot? Cause it seems like the producers are trying to connect the evolutions to the according crests (even tho they are failing horribly imo). Well, not a good episode at all.

Parasimon is nightmare fuel tho.

It really felt like Metalgarurumon was just trivialized. Taichi had to basically die for Wargreymon. There is no comparison. This felt like a cop-out to get that upgrade.

At this point, it was feeling like filler for a few episodes prior. If not for the upgrade, it would feel like total filler.
