I totally get you in regards to watching things in a specific order, even when they're disconnected. I've been mulling around the idea of watching all of Gundam in release order, even though the series' that I'm most excited for are largely (or sometimes entirely) disconnected from the main continuity. Something about the posibility of missing out on small references to prior works in a series or lacking understanding for intergenerational themes or whatever drives me up the wall a bit. Also I've hit a point in my anime fandom where being a completionist is a given and I must 100% every franchise I touch. That might be the reason why I'm so hesitant to start Gundam.

We mostly watched Adventure, 02, and now Frontier Dubbed; I've heard people say that "important characterization" and whatnot are lost in the dub, but I'm convinced that the cheesy jokes and silly voices will almost always give me way more enjoyment than the sub ever could, even if it goves slightlymore nuance to some characters. We made an exception for Tamers and watched it subbed because it's know for being particularly well written, and we watched Savers subbed because it was my introduction to the series and subbed is my default for watching anime. Everything else I've watched subbed. Honestly, with how disconnected the series are, I think it's fine to skip ahead and watch the un-dubbed stuff; I'm sure the Ghost Game dub got canned, seeing as we haven't heard anything about it in almost 2 years.

I love all of the Japanese OPs, excluding maybe the Tri ops.

This is my first time watching frontier! Other than Appmon and Tri, it's the only generation I haven't watched. Digimon is very much a Stockholm Syndrom franchise for me, as in my good friend has been forcing me to watch it for almost a decade now. Between the anime and the tcg, I am ashamed to say that I am, in fact, a fan now.

I'm enjoying it so far. I'm a sucker for Rica Matsumoto, so her voicing the MC can't go wrong with me. I like the character design/style that Nishio, Tetsuya brings to the anime (same guy doing character design and chief animationdirection for Kaiju No.8), it's very appropriate. The setting is kinda funky; everyone is wearing polos, button-ups, and all sorts of other normal street clothes, but the technology and culture all seems pre-1900's Europe. It's kind of a mess.

No problem! I actually never thought it helped anyone, and I was thinking about deleting it, but I decided not to at the last second.
HappyD Jan 8, 6:35 AM
Howdy! Glad to see you got some enjoyment out of it!

I've only watched the sub. Your experience sounds ideal for this sort of show. I definitely feel like I'd have more to enjoy if I'd grown up with it too. Haven't even gotten around to my own nostalgic childhood anime I've seen that way originally. Kind of daunting when something like Pokémon is somewhere around fifteen seasons and twenty movies worth of anime as is. Definitely have been eyeing Yu-Gi-Oh recently with similar interest.

Any other series in this vein you'd recommend?

Honestly, it's not out of the question for me to come back to it, but there just wasn't a whole lot pulling me into the show. The premise is great, and the soundtrack/sound design has its nicer moments, but it just lacked the further intrigue I expected. That, and the overall quality of the animation and writing both are just so-so.

In particular, I really feel Spider Riders didn't quite earn the showiness or "hype" for its more tokusatsu inspired plot beats and sequences. It kind of just made me want to watch something like Kamen Rider instead. I'm starting to think it's more of a tone thing? It just didn't quite span the gamut the way I thought it might or should've with the material.

That being said, I've only watched four episodes, and I just came back to it to make sure I'd drop it for the time being. There's probably something in there to enjoy if you and I are still talking about it now.
