Ughh, like always. Can't trust the ratings from MAL.

This anime wasn't bad per se but not the masterpiece people are making it out to be either, it has beautiful animation but that's it, the story is sub-par and the music isn't nothing to write about either, I would have preferred a music with more melody in it. Anyway, most of the episodes felt cheesy and way too cliche for my taste. (Episode 10 had a beautiful and sad ending that I loved though.)

This episode was cringely bad with Violet's stupid moral compass in not killing the enemies that ARE TRYING TO FUCKING KILL HER, and not only does she not kill them, she also tries to save their lives in the process... ughh... fucking cringe. And the soldiers are pretty damn stupid as well, they had guns for fucks sake, why didn't they shoot her down when they were on top of the train? in her current position there's no fucking way she would have dodged those bullets but no, instead of shooting her down they try to fight her 1 on 1, this is the definition of cringe in animes and bad story writing.

cool action scenes but, the story was only to start in the second to last episode ??? Cuz before that it was only slice-of-life

Okay... another episode I don't feel strongly about. I'm gonna get on with the positives first as always. Violet not wanting to kill anymore is a good development. All the things she learned from her clients are coming in full circle. She has gone from an emotionless war machine to someone who actually values life. Her growth is also evident in how she stands up to Dietfried's harsh remarks about her being a tool. She has realized her self-worth. She knows it in herself that she's not a lifeless combat doll.

With all that said, Dietfried is such an insufferable character istg. For someone considered to be a major character in the plot, he's seriously underdeveloped. Ever since episode 5, I've been wanting an explanation for his extreme hatred for Violet but it turns out he blames her for Gilbert's death after all? This is not clicking AT ALL. He has always shown contempt for Violet even before the major died. Now he tries to act like he's some caring big brother but all we got about him and Gilbert's relationship was glimpses of him being a shady cunt. There are even times when I think he actually disliked Gilbert. At this point, he's just a major asshole.

I've said it before that I won't comment much on KyoAni's abilities to portray war or fighting scenes because it's not their strong point. They've always been known by their slice-of-life/comedy shows but I think this must be said. Not only did they portray the Ctrigal soldiers in the last episode as highly incompetent but they've also managed to do so with the enemy soldiers in this episode. Why the hell does not a single soldier or even their leader ever thought of shooting down Violet. The setting didn't allow much for evading bullets and they've seen her combat abilities in play yet not a single soul pulled the trigger and instead attacked her in melee combat. There was one soldier who tried to shoot her but it was way too late.

Now we're down to the final episode. All I want is a little background from Dietfried and Violet's past and a proper ending with the conflict resolved.

Everything I wanted to say. I've been managing till now, but this and the last episode really tested my suspension of disbelief. Let's see what the final episode offers.

I want to know what it is,
this 'sin' they say I've committed.

Picking up from the last episode, Violet didn't return to CH in Leiden just yet.

So Dietfried reveals what he really thinks of Violet; blaming her for his death. Despite

As good as the emotional scenes this anime has offered so far the action scenes in my opinion are a little ridiculous. First, the soldiers didn't bother to use guns but they chose to fight with the gun blades on top of the train car, and second what are Violet's prosthetic arms made of, she blocked bullets with that, it is Titanium or something?
Anime is fun.

Her hands are made of metal. As for Combat in this series, it’s mostly for story rather than actual fighting.

I do wish we had gotten more insight into why this faction wants to continue the war. So much of this show has been about how everyone has a story that deserves to be told- but for these guys we just get, "Well hey losing a war sucks and now we don't know what to do, so anyway let's be objectively evil."

There was an attempt made at a backstory, at sympathetic motivation. But by the time we get to fighting on top of a train it is a bit too late to matter.

After reading comments from here, I decided to read the novel. If they followed the novel, it will probably take 2-3 episodes to finish the story (train hijacking) because the planning and fighting actually took long. That’s not the reason I read the novel though. I only did it for the romance (sorry, girl here) because I wanted Violet and Gilbert to meet. That scene alone, which I wanted to see in the anime but wasn’t (idk why they want to keep Gilbert dead in the anime?), makes me rate this episode a “2”.
You may have a fresh start any moment you choose, for this thing that we call "failure" is not the falling down, but the staying down

This one was okay...

I liked seeing the aspect of war in the Anime again and also enjoyed Violets interaction with the other characters a lot. But compared to all the previous episodes I didn't really like this one as much

It was still very enjoyable tho

This is my own personal opinion, they messed up the order. Episode 9 was supposed to be the ending. So it's like this
Ep1-7: Violet dilemma and struggle, character development
ep8-9: The truth, grief, guilt, the determination to move on. It's literally impossible to not call this the appropriate "good ending"
ep10-finale: Oh. there's more?

I think the order should be like this

Ep1-7, 10: Violet dilemma and struggle, character development
Ep11-finale: reminiscing the war, the build up for the truth, confrontation with Dietfried
Ep8-9: The truth, grief, guilt, the determination to move on. It's literally impossible to not call this the appropriate "good ending"

Of course, the dialogue wouldn't fit the order since every tv series original order is always ep1-finale. Since this is not a movie, can't expect to rearrange it to the suitable chronological like Insidious or Conjuring&annable. But if we can disregard that little fact for the purpose of good ending, I think you will be satisfied with the result.

we're really gonna end the anime like this? with the last climax being This? a bit Too dramatic gilbert's brother especially mans a dick for no reason but Eh the show overall has been pretty dramatic and id rather have this for gilbert's brother instead of making a shitty sob story for him. hopefully the last ep will wrap it up nicely

i also can't get over the fact that this random MAIL MAN saved the bridge instead of the big man in command i will never get over this THATS SO FUNNYY

Fantastic episode, with plenty of action and drama.

I kinda wish more of the episodes were like this. Violet is an absolute badass when she sets her mind to it.

now that Violet and these guys are coming home, they're moving and they want to start another war. However, Violet can't understand how she went on that train again to fight without knowing that she will have to kill someone, when you are in the fight you don't have to care about enemies and leave them there. 😐

Geez, talk about a very important mission, one that has multiple risks involved. Despite being part of the Navy, they got Gilbert's brother Dietfried to command the mission. This appointment is made funnier when Violet randomly shows up, hehe.

Ahh, just what I wanted to see, a friendly heart-to-heart on top of a moving train. It's almost as believable as Violet seeing Cattleya in a moving plane. She really can seem to do it all.

Violet is resolved now to never kill again, and it shows. Even in the face of death, she tried to pull her enemies to safety. She, however, needs to maybe hide her biggest weakness better: the brooch.

I rewatched this another time and that is such an oddball episode.
The story that had developed so nicely so far wasn't in need of such a climax.

Violet getting roughed up, wrecking both her arms and saving the train was a bit far fetched in my opinion. Most of the time she wrote heartwarming letters and then they decided to copy Under Siege 2 partially. I didn't like it at all that they pulled Violet through hell again, he wanted to cut off her head, seriously?!

All ended well, but a little less drama would also have worked.
Maybe there was no need to adapt that part anyway

I...don't think Violet's prosthetics were really made to be durable enough to be used in combat, much less deflect an RPG round. These aren't cybernetic implants from some post-apocalyptic anime, and if Violet's prosthetics were really that strong, I don't get why they aren't used to augment soldiers at this point. Violet Evergarden has always hovered somewhere around late 18th century and early 19th century technologies, with the sole exception being Violet's arms superseding even near future tech.

Violet Evergarden tries to be as realistic as possible, yet Violet's existence seems superhuman compared to everyone else. I enjoy seeing Violet taking a stance for herself, declaring that she's following orders by her own volition, and not because it's something she's mechanically programmed to adhere to. While the end result is basically the same, the sentiment's different, and we get to see Violet and Dietfried actually unload their emotional baggage regarding Gilbert.

I suppose if I could have my way with the story, I would have Violet's arms be fragile, so she'd use more kicks and throws to compensate. With all her combat training, I'd assume she'd do just as well, and it would feed into some character bit of her wanting to use her hands to write letters, not harm others. Despite not wanting to kill, she's still injuring solders enough to knock them out, so I'm already not buying the pseudo-pacifist talk. I'd just keep it to her not wanting to damage or dirty her hands. Not sure if it'd make the story any better, but I just really don't like how her prosthetic arms - her new lease on life of which she's used to enrich, heal, save, and give closure to so many people - are being used in a manner akin to a cyborg fighter.

It's okay. Guess these final two episodes are wrapping up Violet's character arc in this series. She's coming to terms that she's unable to protect Gilbert at the time, but decided to carry out his orders: "to live".

Just now remembered that Violet doesn't have actual arms...everyone was getting punched by metal. Ouch. That ending was so good! She really does want to change and move on from the past. Its messed up that the Major's brother keeps taking his anger out on Violet

This episode was way too dark to watch it during the day, I could barely see what was happening. Also Violet was kinda annoying this episode, she got almost killed twice because of that stupid "I don't kill my enemies who are trying to kill me" attitude.

that tank shell deflect tho

I'm glad we now understand why Dietfried despises Violet so much. He most likely not only gave Violet to be under Gilbert's command, but as a personal bodyguard to ensure Gilbert's survival. And he probably pushed the idea of her being nothing more than a weapon of war on Gilbert in hopes of him not developing feelings and caring for her. Because if he did (which obviously, he did), he would probably risk his own life to safe Violet's, when Dietfried intended it to be the other way around. Thus he blames Violet for killing his brother, perhaps believing that she had too much of a soul, which weakened Gilbert and caused him to care for and protect her, giving his life.

Although of course we know this wasn't the case; in fact had Violet not been there, Gilbert would've died even sooner lol. It was kind of his own fault for standing out the open and relaxing a bit too prematurely

Violet is superhuman, so likely needs to get over her refusal to kill, as she's a formidable combatant otherwise. She's fighting an "anti-peace" group who are apparently categorically opposed to the idea of harmony on a broad level, for some reason; there isn't any cause for Violet to sabotage herself and risk getting everyone killed just to spare those who are trying to kill her as well.
