| This was... I dunno. I didn't feel it the way everyone else in this topic did, apparently. Maybe I didn't really grasp it. Maybe it's because I had to split it between two equal sessions to watch it. It seemed to me to be about as eventful as a typical Mushishi episode despite being twice the length, which is... not a good thing, to say the least. The creation of artificial souls is perhaps one of, if not the most interesting concept displayed in Mushishi. The world building was great, I enjoyed the character interactions, it was lovely seeing Tanyuu again, but... in terms of progression and story, it was really lacking. Seemed far more slow paced than a typical Mushishi episode as well, probably because of, as I said previously, it being typically eventful but twice the length. Yeah, I really need to rewatch this. Oh, but I did love the ending theme. And the soundtrack overall, but, really, when is the Mushishi soundtrack not phenomenal? |

I actually watched this twice in a row because, like some other people have said, it just didn't "do it" for me, especially at first, and I wanted to figure out why. After two viewings, giving it some thought, and reading others' thoughts on here, I think what didn't grab me at first was that it felt very different than what I'm used to with Mushi-shi (that being the first season, as I've only seen Hihamukage and Season 2 part 1 once each, and haven't seen S2 part 2). Regardless of the subject matter, S1 always felt very vibrant and full of life. This special didn't; it was very much about "un-life" in a sense, so all the drab colors (there was a LOT of grey in this special) are actually very fitting. Another thing that left me a little cold at first was that I didn't empathize with Kumado at all, largely because of his delivery. But, again, he's got a pseudo-soul inside him, so he probably never really feels fully alive, not to mention expressing it with even less vitality. In particular, I liked the use of the small flames used to light rooms. There was always one end hanging out of the shallow bowl/cup that wasn't lit. And the lit end was always closer to the person who had more life in them. I also liked the coloration of the pseudo-soul that they used, being mostly white and grey, with the only other color being blue (none of these are vibrant colors that represent life). It's interesting just how bright it still seemed when Kumado let it out inside the cave to save Ginko. Finally, I really enjoyed the imagery in the scene when he loses his soul. He's upside down, and the vision he has (I'm assuming of his family) is upside down as well, making the viewer feel disoriented. Also, the flowers were daisies, which I've read represent innocence and childhood. After Kumado wakes up and sees mushi for the first time, the elder says something like, "Look. This is how the world really is." I've heard phrases like that used in reference to someone telling someone else to snap out of childish and naive views of the world. I think that bit of imagery in particular really strongly supported what was going on story-wise. This special was really drab and depressing, but still really captivating and interesting. |

| Tanyuu finally reappears in a rather dark episode. I hope after everything is taken care of, she can start her long desired journey with Ginko. Those playful remarks they made on one another just on the taste of the tea she prepared at the end! It makes me think they would have been wonderful as a couple. :) |

| Agree with the minority here, can't believe it would come a day where I find Mushishi boring. The poor directing really shows here, there are scenes where it unnecessarily dragged on, weird pauses, and bad handling of darkness. All said, the story is really great, and depressing, I feel really bad for that guy. |

| A nice, dark special. Tanyuu!! ^-^ All the darkness presented in many ways here, in this episode, was... beautiful! Also, I liked how that artificial mushi devoured that soul eater mushi :) The ending was dark as well, despite them sitting there, happily enjoying their time together, it was one of the saddest endings for me. Seeing that man's face was just... devastating. Every time. I loved it. |

The eeriness and poignant beauty of Mushishi is perfectly captured, and some old characters are fleshed out even more. Ginko's dream scene is probably one of the most beautiful Mushishi scenes ever. I love the way you described it :) Allthough I wasnt as enthralled with this special as I was with the the two full seasons it was definitely a joy to watch. 9/10 |

| Great episode. It's one of the few times Ginko got in trouble and we learned a lot about Mushi. Beautiful as always. |

| The weakest Mushishi special by far. It was hard to connect to the story and the characters in this special. |
| It's the first time we see another mushishi interreacting with ginko that much. his background story was kinda tragic. The story around the minai clan was interesting. Also the part were it's been told that they substitute the soul with that mushi was somehow 'darker' than usual when it comes to the overall plot. I'd like to highlight the ending of these specials because I really like them. |

| The most ominous episode of Mushishi so far. The feeling of uneasiness was palpable, and the flow of the narrative was ever so subtle, both in colour and sound, but at the same time so clear. This is far from the best episodes of Mushishi, but I highly respect what they have done here. I could feel the indifference of that man Kumado in his zombie-state towards his surroundings, whose existence served solely for one purpose, and the worries of the other characters concerning the possible calamity. I could almost draw a parallel with that character's fate and our own, in which all our dreams and ambitions are taken away at some point in our childhood, and our "soul", once free, replaced with a purpose for the sake of the society we live in, setting our path in stone, rarely allowing for true freewill... but let's not got that way, or I may end up rambling in an episode discussion thread... Might not be the most amazing episode character or story-wise, but in terms of ambience, it´s among the best ones. Great as a standalone episode, even better at enriching the mythology of the main series. blushingkillua said: where can I watch ep 2? It's actually just one episode. | I prefer Hihamukage over this. While I loved seeing Tanyuu again (more Ginko x Tanyuu moments, Kumado x Tanyuu to add) I couldn't connect with Kumado much. Yes, I felt sorry for him but then I just... started finding him too robotic. In a way, they might have succeeded. But I liked Hihamukage better for its livelier characters. 8.5/10 |

| I thought Kumado would smile when Tanyuu gave him that beverage but he didn't, for me that was awkward. But he managed to save Ginko from that soul sucking mushi, shows he's not a bad guy. I missed Mushishi and I hope to see it in the future, 8/10. |

| Pretty good, although not as good as anything else Mushishi related we have gotten thus far. I always enjoy seeing Tanyuu as it's nice having someone besides Ginko with character development, and the Kumado guy had some pretty interesting interactions with everyone. That giant hand mushi was really cool too. We also got some decent worldbuilding. I never would have thought that you could light kouki like a candle to produce an artificial soul. Good as always. 7/10. |

| oooo now that was the kinda dark shit i wanted to see from Mushishi at least once. People exploiting mushi's and their ability's, fucked up rituals involving peoples lives/souls and a mushi that could end the world. What the guy went through, i think would actually be a literal definition of hell itself. The world in between ours and the mushis that only houses darkness a purgatory of sorts. A literal trade to loose your soul but to gain the sight to see mushi, and its terrifying to know that people in the mushishi world somehow know this works either maybe from excessive trial and error of human test subjects being trapped in that dark abyss until they either go insane or loose their soul. |

| So, the Minai clan is waiting for Kumado to die (?) and fill his flesh with artificial mushi that is created from boiling Kouki? That is dark, my friend (not as dark as that head chopping guy, though). I'm a bit lost, however. The Sanekui mushi which got killed by Kumado's mushi, is that The Forbidden Mushi which cursed Karibusa family? Or do they have relation to each other? I think I'll need a rewatch on this episode and the one where Tanyuu was first introduced. Anyway, more Tanyuu is always, ALWAYS appreciated. I just loved this kind-hearted lady. The amount of silence in this episode is pretty noticeable. It's understandable for people to get irked by it. The purpose is of course to emphasize the silence of darkness inside the Path of Thorns. You will feel the vibe when you're alone in your dark room while wearing your earphone. It was a good episode for me. |

| We got a bit more backstory about some of the characters like the scribe, but honestly nothing about this episode resonated with me. The main guy’s character is pretty bland, I know he has no soul and that’s supposed to be intriguing, but there’s still nothing memorable about the episode. I feel like a lot about this episode somewhat dragged on, not saying it’s bad but it just didn’t seem to offer a whole lot, and the payoff wasn’t as good either. |

| The episode was already getting sad, feeling pity for Kumado and then the ending made it more depressing. Atleast he retains his previous memories while getting another artificial soul else it would have been more depressing. Happy to see Tanyu in this special episode though. |

| Some interesting touches here. The Minai's soul-replacement is repulsive but it was only Kumado's artificial soul that was able to solve the problem of the soul-eating Mushi. Our boy Ginko was helpless. This informs Tama's uncomfortable acceptance of the practice. Kumado's grandfather presumably also has an artificial soul, but he is not without feeling as he sobbed upon finding his grandson's soulless body. Implies that Kumado himself may regain some degree of humanity |
| unnecessarily slow, way too many still frames that dragged on, conversations felt like they were at .25x speed, and the story was mediocre if necessary for the plot. I started off interested and fell off quick. |

| Nice episode with some heartfelt moments, however i think the concept of what a soul is, is a bit illdefined. I mean when the guy lost his soul over and over again and its being replaced by a new artificial mushi, why does he keep his memories? Are they not part of the soul. He also kept his cold personality with maybe some arrogance or pride for his clan and the hatred towards the forbidden mushi. Also that conversation with Tanyuu about the next hill just being the same was not really well developed... her jelousy comes from the fact that she cant even venture out... it doesnt matter that it all looks the same (besides the fact that if you travel long enough it wont look the same) |
